@eroc2689 ...well not really. Centralia was built upon the coal industry which had already declined considerably long before this coal fire. This area, once known as Bull's Tavern had a peak population of over 2000 and by the 1980's it was down to 1100 partially due to the lack of jobs in the area. Just like any other depressed small town in the coal regions of Pennsylvania.
From my understanding, this is where the author of Silent Hill came up with the idea. Something about he came across Centralia, PA and from there created Silent Hill.
I have gone there. Twice. It is very creepy. The last time I went there, I had Belinda Carlisle's 'Circle In The Sand' in my car's CD player as I drove around - and now I cant play that song without thinking of Centralia.
@monsterpoo6305 If I lived that close, I would go there all the time! I have always been fascinated by abandoned buildings...but a whole abandoned town! Wow! I would have a blast there. It kind of reminds me of Chernobyl, but without the remains of an exploded nuclear plant, and the excessive radiation pollution.
I just find it fascinating how time basically stands still in abondoned places, or "ghost towns."
Awesome slide show, and I'll bet it's a really cool place to go 4-wheeling! ;)
@dslgunner1977 Go there all the time & you'd only take about 30 years off your life. No Chernobyl, no radiation .... only Carbon Monoxide - occasionally fatal amounts in small areas, Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen levels sometimes 75% of normal, Methane - sometimes explosive levels, & other cool gases which only do harm to the body. Too, you may get blasted by a jet of steam hot enough to make your skin slip off, or be roasted if the ground opens up beneath you, which happened at least once. Fun Fun.
In 1960s, the Centralia coal mines sets on fire because the fireman(or men) burn away the trash to the mines, so it's sets on fire. The fireman(or men) tried to extinguish the fire, but the fire is not extinguished. It will sets on fire for 200 years. Sorry for wrong spell, I'm Indonesian
