@fergy429 i saw a relatively recent interview with them on Craig Ferguson (here on youtube), they're both completely white now but their timing was as brilliant at ever.
And yes, Tommy is spot on. It's an irony that you have to be really smart to play dumb that well.
Tom Smothers overcame dyslexia while Dick Smothers overcame a childhood accident to become two of the best entertainers/musicians/comedians of our time. Dick fell out of the hatch door of the family car when he was three. He suffered a skull fracture and lost hearing in his left ear.
I had the good fortune to meet Tom and Dick at the Turningstone Casino on March 4th 2000. And yes, Tom is the same way off the stage as when he is on the stage. They were great that night..... and I got their autographs. My thanks again.
Tom and Dick, 'we the people' miss The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. You did good, both of you. Happy retirement. You both are still #1 in comedy. Everyone else since took your cue and carried on.
Wow !!!Forgot how good they were/are. Thanks so much for this video, and YouTube for all the Smothers Bros sketches."Brill". Check out the American Guild D55 !!! I think Tom was the first ever to own one back in the 60s. The best sounding acoustic guitar ever...........
I used to go to sleep every night to a Bill Cosby record and then a Smothers Brothers record when I was young. There needs tobe more team comedians like these guys.
I heard Howard Stern say, about the 20th reunion show,"What's the Big Deal?" He should count his blessings for these guys!! I haven't really listened to Stern since that idiotic comment!!
This was the late 80's and I still found his show amusing. Then he made that statement and I pretty much just turned him off. Once in a while I would tune in, but It got old , redundant & predictable so I just cut it out all together.
@alwayssme I was a listener THEN,Just felt he overstepped it. I used to enjoy his show,But that and a few other things sort of turned me away. Tom & Dick were great and didn't seem so self-absorbed . Fans of REAL comedy know the difference.
@Nickcat5 back then it wasnt so much reality , vulgarity etc, this was true comedy i think, like the ole dick van dyke show, and more recently whose line is it anyway
i hve never laughed out loud b4 those shows.... ty for replying
@Nickcat5 - Yeah, Stern has made a lot of idiotic comments and remarks, and one of the reasons he has lost so much of his audience - me included. I have no idea how he stays on the air.
I met the Smothers Brothers in March of 2000. And yes Tom is just as funny and nutty as on their TV show. That is a complement. They were just as great that night as they were years ago. Plus.... I finally got their autographs.
I remember the opening to this had Tom and Dick in a helicopter landing at Century City. They said something like "Tom Wolfe was wrong, you can go home again." After they said this a guy with a bazooka is shown at the heliport and he fires at the Smothers helicopter as they begin to scream.
Wow, does Tom remind you of Bush or what! I remember catching a bit of them on the air as a wee child. Over my head, but I remember my folks laughing.
u r right those were the days , true comedy, good variety shows, and such good clean fun, these guys were the best ,now adays people think vulgar is funny or stupid is funny, or just plain out bad shows with bad comedy
im guessing u remember Pat Paulsen , running for president, and he announced it , i think during the smothers brothers show..... wow what awesome times back then
Who was the president joke aimed at?
redsox1006 4 months ago
@redsox1006 In 1988, Ronald Reagan was president, and George Bush (senior) was running against Michael Dukakis.
WendingWanderer 4 months ago
thank goodness they're unlike all those right-wing folk singers.

Too bad they became flaming libs.
forrestgomez 6 months ago
@forrestgomez Became? They were always flaming liberals. That's part of what made them so good, and why they were kicked off CBS in 1969.
WendingWanderer 4 months ago
Brings back such great memories! I can imagine that if they would have another reunion (if only) they'd look and act exactly the same.
Tommy's timing is spot on ain't it?
