  • just a heads up for everyone, NS is going to bring back the steam program sometime this year with the TVRM steamers first

  • I still cant get over seeing that T&P I 1 a done up in Southern Paint for there excursions that was weird to see I wish #610 could be restored to run

  • wow how fast wer they goin in that pacing scene.dont see that anymore!

  • Hey, what's wrong with the UP steam program?

  • Just watch steam engine repair shop and you will see i am telling the truth (tcar 22239) 3:15,watch this video. :-)

  • Please bring back the Southern and Norfolk Steam Program!

  • This is when Class 1's had a public relations program and not a public hate program they stink now.

  • what happed to 610?

  • She is in Tyler Texas at the Texas State railroad.

  • @zathras9now Texas State Railroad is not in Tyler its in Palistine Texas where #610 is

  • is 4449 on this tape

  • I would like to work on steam too when I'm older!

  • I got the DVD, it's absolutley AWESOME!!!!! I just wish that the 8444 was longer.

  • My dad said he`s been in the cab of the 4501

  • That's pretty sweet. 4501 took me and the fam to Chattanooga back in 1992. She was really flying too, probably like 50 mph. That was when she was green :-)

  • they were all on silver steam

  • Yes #4501 can run fast, see for yourself. I know Mr. Robert Yuill who was the Master Wrench / Machinist for The NS Steam Program. He is the best!!

  • Heck yeah she can. I remember back in '92, we musta been going at least 50 mph on the way to Chattanooga.

  • 4501 ran from Stearns because it ran on the K&T rr from Stearns to Blue Hurron in the 1960s The K&T is now the Big South Fork Scenic RR

  • I want to be an engineer of a steam train so bad, I can't stand it sometimes. I love steam locomotives so much. Especially on 4501.

  • I'd love to work on a steam locomotive too. you can be the engineer and I'll be the fireman and we can run one of these giants. Too bad not many of them are around anymore.

  • Yeah that would be awesome!! Alot of good steamers fell under grim fate of the torch, like the J-1a NYC Hudsons and more.

  • Do you know when the 4501 is going to be done with the rebuild? Would love to go vist the TVRM and take a ride behinde her. then need to put her back in the green and gold...then black on the 4501 STINKS!!

  • I have no idea. I would like to see them repaint her in the "Green Machine" paint sceme. 4501 in black is sort of okay, I would probably like black better if the stripes were done in real gold leaf against the black. But I agree black paint just doesn't do this locomotive justice.

  • Can 4501 really run that fast? Looks like she is running 70 MPH to me.

  • I thimk top speed for a 2-8-2 may be 60-65 tops. I saw her last time I was down at TVRM

and she is still painted black. They are takling about haveing her run in 2011 for her

    100 B-Day.

  • I wish they would paint her green with gold stripes again. Where did you see 4501? The last time I was down there I didn't see that engine and their backshop was closed off at that time. It was probably back there somewear.

  • @foxrivermotorman +1 It looked to be about 60 mph. She has 63" drivers and that's probably about as fast as she's capable of running, due to counterbalancing. I've done some calculations and 60 mph comes out to roughly 4.9 revolutions/second with 63" wheels, and although the video is shaky, she appears to be doing about that.

  • Ya you might be right. It seams like 50-55 mph would be top speed out a 2-8-2. And know is usually 1 mph per the diameter of the wheel. So 60-65 mph out of that loco. I know when they ran the 2-8-4 on the NKP they got them upto 80-85 mph

  • Yeah, the New York Central also had its L3 and L4 4-8-2 Mowhawks that could hit 80 mph with 69" drivers, and hold the speed for extended periods of time. Modern steam could generally run a little faster due to advances in counterbalancing and lightweight reciprocating parts. It's amazing the science that goes into it when you think about it, as opposed to just sheer power as many think.

  • Is that 4501's original whistle? I love it, but I like the higher pitched one alittle better though. 4501 is perfect. not to fat, not too skinny. Just the right size.

  • Yes, the soundtrack is original, recorded right on the 8mm film itself!

  • Where is 2839 now?

  • some where in California on staic display...I don't remember the museum name...it's some type of car or transportation museum.

  • cool to see footage of 2839...I live in northampton pa where she was first restored in the 1970's...(before my birth 86) and i remember back in the late 90's she was in bath, pa, 5 miles down the road for restoratiin again till the group disbanded and 2839 ended up in california.

  • I need to get this but it would be awesome if NS would return it's steam program with 1218 , 611 , 4501 , 610 . 2939 would probley not be able to but it would be nice to see and 765 would be great to see agean!!!!!!!

  • WOW! When I was growing up in Covesville Virginia, just outside of Charlottesville, the 611 used to roll by a few times a year. We could year that whistle 10 - 15 minutes ahead of time, and it must been a good 20 miles away.

    I sure do miss that!

  • I enjoy these short clips. They cover a lot of material in short order. Don,t get me wrong though, a FULL THROTTLE RUN up a long stiff grade with lots of tons dragging behind is and will always be the BEST sympothy of sounds so pleasing to the ear of a human being. LONG LIVE STEAM!!!!

  • Did you ever run a steam locomotive?

  • Yes, I,ve run Three. Valley RR #40 and #97. Conway Scenic RR #7470

  • I really miss the sounds of 4501, 610(which I have never heard) and 611.

  • Cool!
