@lolalullababy E.g. King Henry VIII is in no way related to King William the Bastard. Just as Queen Elizabeth II today isn't relate in any way to Henry VIII. Different families and blood lines took control of the throne at different times.
@lolalullababy "changed the English language to have mostly French origin words" That's simply untrue. Modern English is at least still 70% Germanic and although it definitly has a strong French influence it isn't as great an impact as you make it out to be.
"so surely the nobility in the south of England and their descendents who then went on to attack and kill Joan of Arc were French descendents themselves??"
No, the monarchy of England are not all from the same family.

@jiros10 well it's not Ingrid Bergman. But I followed your suggestion and watched the 1928 version. The quality is actually quite good for an early 20th century film that was locked away in a mental hospital. The background on this film was quite interesting. Thank you!
@wolfstev76 Hi Wolfstev. I think you didn't find the right one. You watched "The passion of Joan of Arc", but the Ingrid Bergman's is another one. You will find it immediately with "S. Juana de Arco, 1948" as text search.
enjoy It. It is in English but subtitled in Spanish.
@jiros10 Hi Jiros10, Thank you for pointing me in the correct direction. Still, "The Passion of Joan of Arc" was a good movie and interesting background. But Ingrid Bergman is the one I wanted to see. Muchas Gracias!
@rhbalduino Have you seen Dreyer's "La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc"? I love Ingrid Bergman but she can't compete with Falconnetti in Dreyer's masterpiece. This film may be good but it ain't no La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc.
I adored this film as a child and have loved Ingrid Bergman all my life because of it .. well, that and the fact that she was a brilliant actress and made many good films.
Joan is in fact the noblest picture of mankind as Schiller wrote once in a poem; her life was short but she like Achilles chose a glorious but brief live over a long but quit one. But I must confess she is somewhat an enigma to me: So warlike and so brave but kind and pitiful even to her enemies; all France should have fought for her beneath the walls of Rouen like the Greeks fight for Helen at Troy for she was the only man between living shadows. But England is stained too for burning her.
@GreatGrumbledook France Is A Great Nation And england is crap garbage FRANCE Is 5 Times The Size Of England.Well Scottish Knights Helped Saint Joan In Her Fight Against evil english
@saccyind: That island of England breeds very valiant creatures; and even our warlike Jeanne wanted the English to leave France in peace and join her in a crusade (at least she indicates something like this in her letter to the English regent); and you Indians would not so praise France, if we had won the famous Seven Years War, in which England and France fought over dominance in India; as there is no hunger strike against French cuisine, Monsieur Gandhi! Very unlike the English!
@saccyind: But since you mentioned the Scots, in the middle ages they were the Nemesis of England indeed, as English poets like Shakespeare admit:
"But there's a saying very old and true, 'If that you will France win, Then with Scotland first begin:' For once the eagle England being in prey, To her unguarded nest the weasel Scot Comes sneaking and so sucks her princely eggs, Playing the mouse in absence of the cat, To tear and havoc more than she can eat."
nd therefore came it, that the fleering Scots, To England’s high disgrace, have made this jig; “Maids of England, sore may you mourn,— For your lemans you have lost at Bannocksbourn,— With a heave and a ho! What weeneth the King of England, So soon to have won Scotland?— With a rombelow!”
@GreatGrumbledook But The evil acts of english Reamin Same They Invaded,And Looted France And Then Killed A Great Freedom Fighter And Saint Joan Who Fought Bravely For The Freedom Of France Against evil english invasion No One Can Justify The evil acts of england
@saccyind: There is no such things as evil acts in medieval European warfare! And France fought not so much against England in the middle ages than against his own and the Norman nobility! Remember: Duke William, who conquered England 1066 AD and therefore won the epilet of The Conqueror as king, was of Normandy and therefore a henchman to the French crown and once mustr consider at least the first too centuries afterwards a foreign rule, since not even Richard Lionheart spoke English!
@saccyind: And there the problem originated: Since the Norman nobility kept her fiefdoms in France they had to pay homage to the French King, while being sovereigns of England themselves; this lead to increasing conflicts and Philip II Augustus of France did so utterly defeat King John of England that the epithet Lackland was given to him; and the second time was a fight about the French succession, since the House of Carpet did cease with Charles IV and the English Kings claimed the crown.
@saccyind: Since Edward III of England was the son of Queen Isabella, who was daughter to King Philip IV of France and his next heir, though the Salic Law does bar any succession form the female line; and this caused the English Kings to invade France for about 100 years, until their final defeat in Southern France; where Talbot was slain in battle. So the entire conflict was purely medieval feuding and none of the modern terminology you used is proper here.
@saccyind: In fact our warlike Jeanne, was fighting much more for the righteousness of the succession of Charles VII than to repulse foreign invaders; though for her the realm and king formed a unity and her fighting against the English bears the signs of a national liberation war; but the modern concept of the nation state did develop back there and this innovation of hers did cause the English to oppose her with that malice and hatred; but she was condemned by French priests.
@saccyind: The English assembled an ecclesial court at Rouen and had her tried for heresy and witchcraft and though the English mistreadings here seem to be sure one must not forget that but her trials stood under the influence of very biased parties: The English saw her guilty, while for the French nothing should stand against her innocence; and had the Church not so many doubts she would have been canonised 500 years ago and not due to popular demand recently.
@saccyind: I heard nothing of that; and if you would taken some pains to study history you would notice that the Armagnac faction, warlike Jeanne was fighting with, was by no means known for its good conduct towards the French peasentry and city folks; just take the infamous Cabochien Revolt for example!
I know, its like William Wallace. You're glorified by the reality of it from the beginning then you get to see the horrifying outcome in the end, at least for a while until the meaning sets in.
yeah, that's true. but, the british intrigue is over because there was an investigation of a ''satanist'' who collaborated with the english. that person was expelled by his church for ''lying'' during joan's trial. he should have been ''burned'' for committing ''heresy'' at joan's trial.
I bought this on an impulse off Ebay and didn't read I was getting the colorized version. How I regret it. It's like putting sugar on cherries.
I say B&W only for this film. What a face Ingrid had as a young woman--not at all glamourous in this film; innocent and far beyond glamourous. Perfect bone structure. Color no way does it justice.
Actually, this version with Ingrid Bergman was originally made in Technicolor, not in Black-and-White. It was released in late 1948 and won two Academy Awards for it's color cinematography. There has never been a black-and-white version of this film, other than being shown on televison before color t.v. sets became prevalent.
