  • @M1t20

so unhip, when you say Dylan he thinks you're talking about Dylan Thomas

  • Cool Syd You too were a talent

  • wheres the damn bob dylan verson!

  • Syd saiu do floyd fisicamente, mas a semente foi plantada e o floyd não seria nada daquilo que foi, se ele não estivesse passado pela banda.

    VIVA SYD BARRET!

  • nice song, Syd, I love Bob Dylan, but he really was a bit of an ass in his younger days ;D RIP Syd

  • @JohnKulo bollocks

  • @jonathan1994ish1 You're telling me Dylan wasn't a bit egoistic in the top of his career? He was, something wrong with that? Doesn't take anything from his music. Syd wasn't mentally stable, are you gonna tell me he wasn't? So what if he was? Doesn't take anything from his music. I hate people who think all their idols were perfect people. Mine's sure as hell ain't, they're human.

  • A simple desolatory philipic.. right? right?

  • Mr. Barrett the King!

  • I was walking home from this lake near my house smoking a joint, and I was like, (on iPod shuffle) "this song is great!"

Syd was definitely in my humble opinion a very, very talented man.

Has anyone else noticed the slight similarity in both the phrasing and the words "as a bird on the wing" and the Roger Waters "Pigs On the Wing"?

    Syd Barrett 1946 - 2006

  • Mr Dylan THE KING!

  • @fishtruckthatloads The King 4 ever Sir

  • it doesn't sound like syd thought very highly of dylan, hahahah

  • @magua4 did you not hear the song?

  • I wonder if syd in his later years knew that theres so many fans that still admire him and his songs.

  • 3:10 that I always wish would never end, however many times I watch it.

  • This man and his incredibly underrated music changed my life . Syd Barrett forever

  • Bob Dylan should write a Syd Barrett Blues

  • SYD is the psychedelic Dylan!!

  • @pep25pin dylan did psychedelics?

  • I don't know but suspect, (after reading an article in Wiki), that Syd was like a lot of artists ..... a purist that couldn't accept replication in any form as worthy of an artist.

'Do you get it yet' at the recording studio when he kept changing the composition &

the possible drug / artistic nature combination infused with internalisation & belief that he WAS the 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'.

There will be many views on the life of Syd Barrett but only He knows The truth.

    R.I.P. Syd

  • Thanx for this fantastic upload.

'Syd not only composes a song poking fun at all of the Bob Dylan' HYPE, 'but manages to do it in Bob Dylan's own talking blues style!'.

So is the teenage Syd: taking the P; questioning Dylan's motives; dismissive of Dylan's acclaimed talent; aspiring to be like Dylan; agreeing with Dylan's recorded view of the human world?

  • @IAmMystified i think hes partly poking fun at a dylan, partly criticizing. no biggie

  • Syd Barret and Bob Dylanare my top influential music artists.

  • nice video! At least Syd was just mad, at least he wasn't a junkie...

  • @therearenobloodyname how do you think he got mad

  • @zepkungfu syd was never mad, but the rest of the world was.

  • @barzatops What do you mean by that?, That the whole "mad" thing was a genius but sacrificing way to get out of the fame thing? Or are you just some kinda sentimental fan or something. About the first option if it were true it would be genius and it must be used for a great movie that doesn't hold on the "facts" bust just suggests the theory of escaping the fame thing, on the other hand (continuing the speculation that the crazy thing wasn't real) he maybe DID it for fame. Who would know.

  • Meh...

  • @ playserious thank you soooo muck for this video. Syd IS just so amazing... he just keeps on shining

  • Wait a minute! Has anybody actually seen Dylan and Syd together? This makes me think...

  • Why do you say that Dave?

  • gotta give it to syd !! he is a lot better than that asshole dave gilmore

  • Comment removed

  • Ladies and gentleman, one of Syd's greatest..... I love the way he looked at life.. with insight, empathy, humility, and a desire to celebrate the human spirit...

    heartbreakingly great visuals.......

Well I sings about dreams and I rhymes it with seems, cuz it seems that my dreams always means/ that I can prophesy all kinds of things..... I'm as free as a bird on a wing........

  • This song is amazing. I adore Syd and I love Bob and this is just wonderful.

  • this like bob dylan's music too

  • Syd RULES!

  • thanx syd

  • i love syd's songs!!! :)

  • Syd Barrett singing about Bob Dylan. Fucking win/win. Love them both. Both amazing, inspirational artists.

  • Syd is better than this guy bob dylan, end.

  • Pink Floyd without Syd = Pink Shit (or Shit Floyd).

  • @boogie1master you seriously don't like dark side or that wall or wish you were here?

  • @theSodMonster I like the false start of "If it's in you" more than PF without Syd :)

  • @theSodMonster i think he dont no wtf he's talkin about lol

  • lol

  • He was so cheeky :) I love Syd!

  • u think bob dylan has ever heard this awesome song?

  • syd barrett was a genuise

  • I love Dylan, i just dont like his manager.

  • Ah, come on now guys, quiet while Syd makes like a cat!

  • @thearistacats1 Let him Roam From town to town and be free as a bird on the wind

  • This is a great song.

  • This song is teeming with wit.

  • I love Dylan, still, I can see how he deserves some ridicule. This is a very clever slam which, as biting as it is bitter, is still a form of tribute. If there is one thing Barrett never did, that is "sell out", but then he never really got the chance, did he...? I mean to say that I really love this song. For another Dylan slam song listen to David Bowies' song "A Song for Bob Dylan". Acerbic. (look it up) Hey, mushroomagical, just read you and agree. Sorry to reiterate...

  • R.I.P Syd Barrett (2006) and R.I.P. Richard (Rick) Wright(2008)

  • genius

  • Me: I LOVE YOU SYD Douche I know:Fk him Me:*Slgs him in jaw Orly?

  • you know, I've always wanted Syd to read me a bedtime story..

  • This song makes me sad.. Poor Syd, he was such a genius but he had such a short lived career ):

  • Syd is sort of paying tribute and mocking Dylan at the same time. Syd kept it on the border of "respect / disrespect" on purpose, so it seems, which makes it rather interesting.

  • Has Bob Dylan himself ever heard this song? I'd love to see his reaction to it.

  • I bet Dylan loved this song when it finally came out. Someone should ask him about it.

  • I wonder why there are many songs dedicated to Bob Dylan. You think this is kinda like a tribute to him as Dylan did to Woody?

  • Sorry that Syd died, only a young man, but can you imagine the way the path Floyd would have taken if he were still alive? The Floyd of Syd was unrecognisable to the masterpieces created by the music of Walters and Gilmour, Wright and Mason. Dont think that Floyd would have reached the heights of greatness they achieved with him. Sad, But I think true.

  • @mr1168726 Syd died in 2006. He was certainly out of the musical limelight when he was young, though.

He's only unrecognizable because of Dark Side of the Moon's commercialization and everything afterwards. Piper is every bit a masterpiece as The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper and Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland. But the media continues overplaying and milking money off of the same Floyd songs over and over instead of giving equal treatment

Syd actually suggested adding sax and girl singers to the band

  • @mr1168726 Also, Piper at the Gates of Dawn charted number 6 in England, probably held off by Sgt. Pepper, Hendrix and some other bands, but it was pretty much a hit. They were championed by Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend and others.

It only didn't chart in the U.S. because the label there changed the track order and didn't promote it. The band didn't have any contact with the U.S. label. And Syd's refusal to play meant their U.S. tour had to be cut short. So the U.S. hadn't really heard them.

  • @TheOneartist I still think that Syd was a raving looney. I really do mean that in the nicest possible way though. When he made that album, the country was going through a peace and love, hippy kind of thing. Lots of dope, and a desire amongst those who wanted to appear different, to buy music that was;nt that good, mostly to try and impress. Leaving Floyd was the making of them, sorry, but true I believe.

  • @mr1168726 Syd made innovative, brilliant, creative and daring music. The music certainly still impresses, because it's amazing.

What's wrong with peace and love? I wish it'd all come back instead of money and violence-loving, selfish wannabe gangsters and crappy pop music. And certainly nothing wrong with lots of dope. It's lots of booze that I can't stand, especially seeing beer companies fund concerts when people are obviously going to be buying it to get drunk.

    But hey, your opinion.

  • @TheOneartist Nothing wrong with peace and love, just does'nt exist anymore. No good looking back. As ''they say'' Nostalgia isnt what it used to be. And when you say,'nothing wrong with lots of dope, obviously you hav'nt done much. I have, I was there. People think its cool now, to do lots of dope, all for the wrong reasons, mostly to escape from the reality of this shit world. Take a look around, lots of youngsters with very little brain, sitting around looking gormless and lost. Get real Eh?

  • @mr1168726 By dope you mean weed, right? Cannabis actually promotes brain cell growth and can help prevent Alzheimer's so I wouldn't call people who use it having little brain. Also, I find sativa effective for my depression. I don't even want to touch antidepressants because of all the side effects they have and how they can deepen depression even more. It doesn't make me escape reality, either.

I think we should strive for peace and love, even as individuals. and try to help when we can.

  • @TheOneartist It doesn't promote cell growth. A certain type of synthetic marijuana does, however, promote cell growth in rats. Not that I'm disagreeing with you.

  • @goonsauce I recommend you look up some studies and watch some videos on YouTube. And that synthetic stuff tends to be worse, and doesn't have all the ingredients and antioxidants that natural, well-grown cannabis does.

  • @TheOneartist Yes, this is obvious. I'm saying that regular cannabis does not promote cell growth.

  • @TheOneartist Listen mate, I first started smoking Hash & weed in 1962. Then it was good stuff that gave you a high that enabled you to have a good time, then carry on with reality the next day. The SHIT WEED that is sold today (SKUNK), is FUCKING BRAIN DAMAGE. No to antidepressants, I agree, but have you really bothered to work out why you are depressed? TODAYS WEED!!! There are so many people having a bad depressing time because of the power of it. If you really think that Sativa is good =

  • @mr1168726 Jamaican, African and Thai seeds aren't cannabis. And there are many growers out there that grow dank, medical quality cannabis. Not everything is the cheap stuff that comes from Mexico.

And I've been depressed for a long time, and have many reasons for it. Cannabis does the opposite, takes it away and makes me be able to deal with what I'm going through. Calm down. Cannabis isn't for everyone, but it is a healing plant with many uses and the potential to help many.

  • @TheOneartist You silly person. Of course these strains are proper weed. You probably hav'nt had the chance to try them.Unless you have a genuine medical or family reason for being depressed, the fault lies with you. You say you have been depressed for a long time. If dope calms it, then all you are doing is using a short time escape route.I really miss a smoke, but I badly suffered your symptoms, so I knocked it on the head and sorted it. DONT use dope as a crutch, it does'nt work OK?.

  • @mr1168726 It's a personal reason. I don't see it as a crutch. I see it as a tool and healing herb that can help me work through what I'm going through. The last time I got high was very spiritual, and I was getting encouraging words seemingly out of nowhere that I felt I had to write down.

I'm dry, anyway right now and have been a long time so calm down. I'm not saying you have to use it, but don't discount others' experiences because it truly has helped a lot of people in many different ways.

  • @mr1168726 Also, this is not a cannabis legalization video. This is a song by Syd Barrett paying tribute to Bob Dylan, so let's keep it at that now. Carrying on conversations on YouTube gets old, anyway.

  • @TheOneartist I agree, Musical preference is personal thing. Also, I didnt say it was a dope legalisation viid. You mentioned that you are down, and smoked weed ,I just thought I'd tell you the facts of life ( the reality ) about dope. I'm note a 'dope basher', I love the stuff, but also it is a very clever drug, Makes people say silly things, like it is harmless, non addictive ETC. I've been there mate, know the score. Down 2 U now to decide I've had enough now. Truce OK?

  • @TheOneartist Think again. Sativa is heavy. Get youself some good Jamaican seed, African or Thai, grow and smoke that. HEY= welcome back to reality. They dont give Joints to Alzheimer sufferers, just the good bits that help. The same as they give to MS sufferers. The side effects you are getting are probably made worse by the weed. I REALLY DO KNOW, I've been there. Packed up the shit skunk & got back to life. You are just digging your own hell hole. Get out now B4 u turn into a psychotic. TRY IT

  • @mr1168726 No you have to roll them yourself !Plants are living organisms belonging to the kingdom Plantae and have no nationalites...

  • @mr1168726 And I can't stand the state of music these days. There are still a few good bands, true, but things are certainly not the same at all. As someone who's passionate about music. that alone makes me wish I was in the 60's, and not in this crap generation having been in school around mostly tasteless peers.

  • @mr1168726

he was 60 when he died...

  • @letmeloginyoucunt As I said '' He was just a young man''

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • Syd is God

  • the wind - you can blow it, cuz I'm mister Dylan the king... lol!

love you Syd, you still do it to me - make me laugh, & cry, all at the same time and every thing in between. it's all the same, we'll ever be

...free as a bird on the wing.

  • AW! FUCK NO

  • I knew nothing of Syd til i took shrooms with my brother and watched the Wall, and now i just want to go back and meet him.. The Walls a fun time btw

  • I know it may be wrong, but fuck it ! Piper At the Gate's of Dawn, and LSD made me what I am today. Aint afraid to experiment and push the envelope. Thank you Syd !! Rest in peace.

  • @MWL4466 That is one of my dreams, to not only drop acid, but to hear Piper on acid. When I first heard Piper it changed me and my outlook on music. Really innovative. Psychedelic rock is amazing

But like Syd, I dig Bob Dylan as well, and I dig Syd's solo work, including his acoustic songs

Nothing wrong. The problem with Syd were bad mindsets and settings as well as strong frequent doses. He lived in a communal flat for a while where people laced everything with LSD. And also pressures of fame

  • @TheOneartist Yes it made for some long strange night's! But I think in Syd's case the strength and frequency of the acid in the 60's contributed to his schizophrenic and generally fucked-up state of mind. It definetly unlock's the door's of perception as they say. But if you're in a fragile state of mind or not in familiar surroundings with good friend's, it can really mess you up. Be sure to have some Yes or King Crimson there for the trip too!!! Cheer's ....

  • Syd barrett was a rock'n roll angel. This is a masterpiece and it goes to show that he liked other artists also. If he kept himself together its a wonder what he would have became. I honestly think for a short time that he was the king of rock'n roll and it s nowadays we wonder what!!!

  • Syd Barret WAS Pink Floyd...the rest of them were just a band...

  • @jnuhiscarabaid what about Dark side of the moon, whish you where here, the division bell, the wall and others?!!??? just a band?

  • @Deepbeatu2 meeeeeh those were nothing compared to the piper

  • @ALMATUBE1 right! but you can't assert that the rest was just a band

  • @Deepbeatu2 These Albums would'nt have been made with Syd in the band, thank God.

  • Hilarious

  • The story of Syd Barrett is legendary, rock's first ''acid casualty,'' it really sucks that he only had a handful of material to show his genius, because 1 album with Pink Floyd, 1 song from A Saucerful of Secrets, 2 solo albums, and some singles is NOT NEARLY enough, it's quite sad somebody so genius and incredible, suddenly becoming unable or unwilling to continue his work, and becoming a recluse until he passed away in 2006, is one of rock's best, and saddest. May he shine on.

  • damn, this is seriously cool, thanks for uploading :)

  • Free as a pig on the wing.

  • Not really we where doing this Irish Pubs for a long time before this song . Still good though .

  • Godlovesveg1, Are you serious? LOL people like you are between the gutter and the stuff on my bottom lip very early in the morning

  • wonderfully witty and loving! miss you Terrapin!!! xxx

  • This video is extremely well put together; it's almost as good as the song itself in some parts.

  • Sirius

  • is like what bob would sing :)

  • nah hes cutting him up but in a nice way though. he probably couldnt help liking him

  • tinta roja.

  • red inck

  • Syd loved Dylan. This song is chilling. Give Syd a chance. Open your eyes!

  • nice tune!

  • Comment removed

  • @itsskatee This isn't a diss, it's a tribute. Syd loved Dylan

  • Of course I love Syd's music, its amazing, He is so unique. He's lyrics are freak'in out there in the most awesome way. And the style of his guitar, and the melodies of his lyrics....can't even compare. But seriously....I'm a girl and he is also hot as shit haha....just saying....

  • nice tribute from syd god bless him ,pity his songs never matched those of His Bobness.

  • "I am a poet and don't you know it

and a wind you can blow it !!!! "

    classic

  • The greatest songwriter to come out of cambridge ever. ever. ever

  • Love this...nice work, Jimmy Lee

  • cute and creative--thank you

  • PERFECT

  • quiet while i make like a cat

  • one in a miliom man

if u were only kept shining...

  • @bananenbennie I don't think we can really compare Barrett to Dylan, probably because Dylan was more consistent over a longer period of time. I admire both in different ways. Ummm who was better barrett or roger or lennon or dylan??? I think they are all genius'

I don't think we can really understand Barrett's genius, we can only laugh and smile when we think of him.

  • I wonder what mr Dylan thinks of this song :)

  • Barrett puts Dylan in his place, unlike the media hacks.

  • @GunsBates check out Bob Dylan admitting on 60 minutes, jvst type that in you tube and it will pop up,

  • @GunsBates

    What place is that exactly?

  • @gabiotta

    London :)

  • my clothes and my hairs in a mess, but you know I justcouldn't care less!

  • Fuck all of you guys below me who were involved in that extremely immature and stupid conversation.

  • BEST SONG EVER.

    SYD WAS REAL GENIUS.

  • I'm glad Gilmour did release it, I like it. I don't think it was meant to be insulting, just tongue in cheek, Syd admired Dylan. I heard that he wrote this when he was only 15 after he and David Gilmour went to see Dylan in concert. He probably didn't mean for it to be released, just written in fun.

  • I've always enjoyed listening to Syd with a cold cup of tea minus the sugar....May sound weird but I actually enjoyed doin' that...Luv u Syd

  • @devilive14 what i'm doing right now is sipping a hot cup of tea (mmm not properly tea, it's a strange kind of herb tisane): what an enjoyable thing is Syd!

  • @sasybee Ur totally right bro and hey you told me a new thing about this herb, guess I'll look for it and try it while listening to Syd...cheers mate

  • this is fucking excellent. Syd Barett was a huge influence on me in many ways. His story is as sad and romantic a story as could ever be imagined. I have never found this before. Thank you to you who posted it.

  • I am as big a Pink Floyd fan as anyone and embraced a lot of the early stuff with Syd, but since I'd never seen this before I feel like Syd has reached through the years, the ages, beyond the grave even and dropped a classic right in my lap. Like Roger said, he's still "piling on more layers". I might have to drop a few bones and get that "Wouldn't You Miss Me, The Best of Syd Barrett.... Outstanding.

  • @Jethro719 get the mad cap laughs as well :D

  • kinda sounds like a song ringo would write lol, love this song though

  • @ilooklikeppl Yeah...Ringo ought to do an album of Syd Barrett covers...his voice would really fit them. Seriously.

  • Lovely music!

  • Theres some degree of personal taste here, no? Nice piece of history either way! how do you compete in poetry anyway? What's next, a War of Peace?

  • MY GOD THIS GUY WAS WAY HEAD OF HIS TIME !!!

  • @SuperFreakleAK Yeah, and his head was way the fucked up... Astronomy Domine rocks though... we need insane geniuses... better art get's made that way.

  • Good Looks with Black Hair

A Few Strings and to Sing

    Make it for You??

    Made it for Me!

  • Also listen to Protest Song by Neil Innes....

  • Pretty shitty, just cause it's Syd shouldn't make it good...shitty song.

  • @bobbybloodfeastin308 True, I'd rather hear Bowie's "Song For Bob Dylan" .On the other hand ,I think Syd would've been the first to admit, this was a throwaway little ditty, not meant to be released.

    Still...nice little video.

  • @bobbybloodfeastin308 You don't know anything Syd knew so shut up and try to make a song like this then you can judge.

  • Comment removed

  • @23mjkl4 of the last century?seriously?? me thinks syd missed the boat. given that this is a song by a young Barrett this is no match for a young Dylan, who was essentially trying to be Woody Gutherie and presents the true disconnect of future music. Dylan railed against a system of injustice in a truely masterful way. Dylan is about Liberty. Barrett was both enamoured and jilted by society and never saw past the illusionary wall of social control and so goes the rest of rock n roll.

  • @RedcoatOrRebel Its just a song? He was an artist in his time saying what he feels.

Pink Floyd in the 60s pissed all over Dylan, And thats a fact.

  • @TheChalkychalk lol???

  • @RedcoatOrRebel Oh YEAH? you miss the whole point here, get over you darn The Wall thing, it was all about being free as a bird on the wing.

  • I hope Syd wouldn't think less of me for being a fan of music's jester, frankly if I had to choose between the two I don't think I could do it :)

  • This song alone makes me think Barrett was the most naturally gifted songwriter of the last century. He completely matches Dylan's songwriting without even trying, and he was what, 16? Its a shame his personality was so unstable, but then again most geniuses are.

  • @23mjkl4 methinks it was rather his environment than his personality, and yes, this is a brilliant song.

  • @23mjkl4 so succinct and true.. but that is the sacrifice a genius is cursed with.. the ability to re-conceptualise existence far beyond the reaches of most functional human minds, at the price of complete disillusionment with perceived normative reality all around them..

  • @23mjkl4 Matches Dylan's song writing? I love Pink Floyd as much as the next guy, but not even I would make a claim like that.

  • @TheMauriceWhite And you're right

  • Comment removed

  • way to go Syd, another good one !!! Too funny ! Thanks to Mr. Gilmour for releasing it !!! Syd rules !!!
