I hate writing research papers, but after having to do one over Ollie Johnston and finding out who he is, this two page long report is quickly turning into a ten page one. This guy is so awesome it's unreel.
disneys 9 old men were gods. What they did is unparalleled in the history of cinema. Very very few humans can duplicate their genius. They came from an era when americans were some of the most awesome humans on this planet. Only massive economic hardship and absolute brilliance can craft people like that.
Bambi always makes me feel like crying. Not because it's sad when his mother's shot or when the forest burns, but because every damn thing in it is beautiful; the animation, the paintings, the music, the storytelling... it's all just perfect.
See now he's a legend, but this is what this tells me. Judging from his past portfolio, you can only deduce one thing, it takes every kind of skill and talent to become a Disney animator. Or an animator in general, clearly. Plus I hate people who say that art is a skill. That's the biggest pile of horseshit ever. Either god gives it to you and you find it and do something meaningful with it, or you don't have it and are with the "other people" as we true artists like to call it.
I agree with your sentiments of art not being a skill. I actually had a conversation about that not too long ago. "Anyone can draw a picture. Not everyone can draw a picture that speaks to your soul." A lot of Disney moments do this. Most of their movies in the beginning had at least one part that made your heart drop or got to your giggle box. Same with just about any art form - like dancing, acting, singing... there are certain things about these that can't be taught.
@cartoonmarc Yes, you do need to learn how to draw, but this is exactly my point. Drawing well doesn't make you an artist. It just means you know how to make lines. Some people are awesome at drawing, but they really have no idea how to make it artistic. Others.... their drawing isn't really all that great, but they can make something so beautiful that it speaks to your soul. There is that element that isn't some skill you can read about in a book. It's something you discover in yourself.
In fact there was 10 Old Men. The tenth is Floyd Norman who for some reason at that time was not credited for his work but, has since been recognized for his contribution to Disney. Mr. Norman was hand picked by "the Old Man" Walt Disney himself, to join the animation team.
@workingclassics you could also argue that norm ferguson, art babbitt, fred moore or bill tytla were also one of the "ten old men" but it was the nine old men who contributed greatly to each and every movie disney made up to the rescuers. unlike the actual nine old men, floyd norman wasn't involved in every disney movie.
I went to his funeral a while back and met Brad Bird while I was there... such a beautiful and true artist.. I don't think he even comprehended what he'd done to the industry :)
Ollie Johnston: A man, a moral, a dream, a legand. May his spirit live forever in the hearts of those who loved and adored him, and in the precious celluloid on which his brilliance shines. We miss you dearly.
i remember when i heard that Ollie had died. I was a sophmore in college, waiting for my next class to start and i was reading the new york times, and printed in the middle of the paper was the headling "Ollie Johnston, Last of the Nine Old Men Dies." Some of my favorite works of his were in 101 Dalmatians. Ollie was a very talented man and he will be dearly missed.
Ollie Johnston and the Nine Old Men crafted what is known as the Disney Animation stlye period. Ollie especially put a special emotional touch to all his characters that you feel even without knowing it. A true legend who will definitly be missed. For those who like the Disney Family Album you should check out the movie 'Frank and Ollie'
What's sad you guys with the death of Ollie Johnston, all of Disney's Nine Old Men are gone. All that's left are their work including Ollie Johnston. May he rest in peace.
There will never ever be another Ollie. The man left his career on such great Disney classics that stand the test of time. Thank you for showing people magic through the masterpieces you left on these films.
Thank you Ollie for the Joy, Happiness, and compassion you have shared with everyone!! Although I didn't know you personally, you truly moved me and have inspired me to chase my dreams through your emotional animation! We will miss you dearly, but the love you put into your work will continue to inspire people.
Thank you so much for all your work. You've helped to create so much magic and memories for millions (if not generations). Rest in Peace, Ollie-you will be missed but you won't be forgotten.
Johnston had his hand in all of these and worked on such other favorites as Brer Rabbit, Mr. Smee, the fairies in Sleeping Beauty, the centaurettes in "Fantasia," Prince John and Sir Hiss ("Robin Hood"), Orville the albatross ("The "Rescuers"), and more than a few of the "101 Dalmatians".
Ollie did Thumper's riotous recitation (in Bambi) about "eating greens" or Pinocchio's nose growing as he lies to the Blue Fairy, and the musical antics of Mowgli and Baloo as they sang "The Bear Necessities" in The Jungle Book.
ohh Lord:( I had the kuck to meet briefly Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston No nicer guys ever existed. they signed my copy of Illusion of Life after giving a presentation at the smithsonian. I will never forget that presntation.
Thank you for the incredible legacy you leave behind. You have been a great inspiration and there are a lot of people who have gained so much from your generosity with your knowlegde. Rest in peace. You will be missed!
