Lawd have Mercy.....I was 17 at the time but my fake ID had me at 21 which allowed me to get into the club.... The first club I sneaked into & the the first jam I danced to was this one! Thanks for posting the jam & may Etta RIP. So many of today's so called female artist should be taking notes from Etta..... No tricks, no dubs, no videos to distract one from the music
get your funk on, gurrrllll...agree @atomank68...just goes to show her all encompassing greatness...the woman could, and did sing any and all and sang it better 'n most!!
Never saw that Jimmie Haskell arranged this, as well as Ode To Billie Joe. This is one of my all-time favorite recordings by ANYONE. If disco had taken a hint from this instead of taking the boring route it took, we would have different music today. Breathtakingly brilliant performance by Ms. James, one of our most underrated stars.

Utterly sublime... A very brave work & so obviously an honest autobiographical account of one woman's struggle with addiction. It is this that sets this lady apart from her peers - Eartha, Candi, Marlena, Millie, Shirley, Tina, Diana, Gladys, Mary etc. This girl must have had it harder than most - climbing to the top carrying King Heroin on her back every step of the way ain't no easy thing... Diva just doesn't cut it... Divastating is more like it! A definitive & very classy R&B matriarch...
Heard this when I was 17 ....it didn't get enough air time....haven't heard it since till now!....I't's sooooo good ...."Pleeeeeese help me help me get off...before i lose my key to freedom" !!!!
LOFT CLASSIC !!!!!!!!!! also played in the early days at all the GAY clubs in NYC and my memories of the infamous New York Avenue clubs in Atlantic City.....what a time..
Few things are as sweet than to have a great singer's particular great work posted more than once on YOUTUBE. Especially one that's been out of print for THIRTY-SIX YEARS!!!! can you dig it, can you dig it? I know y'all can!!!
@kshirriff. Agreed, most heartedly!!! I first became accquainted, and a fan fan in 1972AD at age 15 with this very song, along with "Tell Momma All About It", on the CHESS label. She, and Candy Stanton, Millie Jackson, etc. excited a whole new Generation od young ppl at that time. Nor bad for a bunch of of broken-down, middle-aged couts!!!
