So many do not understand what musical theater was like back then. the competition was cutthroat, because there were potential hits written the best writers Broadway ever saw for countless theaters. Sweet voices, operatic voices, and great actors were a dime a dozen in New York Channing, Holiday, Martin, and especially Merman commanded a stage with a unique presence, far more rare than any specific set of skills like dancing, acting or singing.
I am doing this song for my singing class in college. I've really grown to love this song. I was a little hesitant at first since I usually only sing metal
You've got to love Ethel. What a trouper. And as for the negative comments about her singing? How many of today's performers will be remembered over 50 years later for a performance? Not many, I'm sure.
So this is Ethel Merman. My dad said I sound like her when I yell. I was just curious if that was a comlpliment, or if I should be worred. Now I know. I guess it's not so bad, but I do NOT sound like that.=)
Stephen Sondheim, who wrote Gypsy, did not like Ethel Merman personally, but says she was the greatest singer in Broadway history. Merman, who was never modest, once said that she could hold a note longer than the Chase National Bank. She was an amazing talent.
Well im not saying I agrew with it but its their opinion.. Chill. And if they werent realy familiar with Broadway musicals, then their opinion would be more random instead of biased than any other... Just saying. Have an open mind.
she may not have the most pristine voice, but man, can she wail. no one was singing like this when she was doing that. she was jaw-droppingly gorgeous to boot. pure talent
brava, wish i could have seen her live. (luckily i was blessed with the gift of being able to see patti do it and to be completely transformed by her performance, but still, this is THE ethel merman we're talking about)
I did see Ethel Merman's Rose opening night to closing night. I was actually good friends with her because of my mother who did her nails. And I told my mother since Happy Hunting how much I wanted to meet her so she sent me backstage opening night to meet her. I just couldn't stop seeing the show it was so good. I had nothing better to do with my time anyway, so every matinee and night performance of that show I was there front row center.
If it was anyone else but ethel merman trying to sing as nasally id hate it hate it hate it but the merm (an actual nickname of her) always puts a smile on my face. IF she had the acting chops of patti (which face it; she didnt) shed own this role.
HA! Maybe Ethel was a little nasally and maybe it took Ethel a little more to get her emotional side out. But you never put Ethel Merman's name in the same Paragraph with Patti LuPone. This was Ethel Merman's show she owned it, she made it big, she was the Only ROSE!! And as far as I am concerned Patti's voice holds no candle to Ethel Merman's. If you think Patti's Gypsy is good, you should have been there May. 21st, 1959, you'd change your mind in a New York Minute.
You gotta look at it from my point of veiw. You probably didn't see Ethel in Gypsy. I am telling you all, you'd change your mind quick. I saw Lansbury but I didn't think she was the best Rose she was good but nothing can subtract from that night in 1959 when Ethel said "Sing Out Louise"
Though I was not lucky enough to witness, first hand Miss Merman's performance in GYPSY, I have listened to all recordings of the show quite a bit,and after seeing Bernadette and Patti, ( plus film version w/ Roz.), must agree w/ you, ragtime1925, it's Ethel's part. I DID get to see her in the revival of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN,and though I was just a tot at the time, I KNEW, and felt as though she was singing only to me, as she filled the large Lincoln Ctr. theater with that glorious voice.
You can feel her stage presence through an audio recording!

Terrific! I love Lansbury, Midler, and LuPone's versions as well, but this role is OWNED by Merman. She created it and is still the best in it.

"Her voice is horrible! But, I like the song. A 10 yr. old can sing better. "
That is one of the most inane comments I have ever seen on YouTube.Only a person who has no knowledge of music could say such a thing.
Ethel Merman was well respected with good reason.

Well, you have to admit her voice is an acquired taste. In my opinion, it sounds like a fire alarm, but I like how passionate she seems.

anyone who does not find Ethel merman amazing, is nuts.. like Patti Lupone for instance, cannot hold a candle to her. There was only one Ethel.
