  • I had the honor of meeting this great runner, but a better person!

  • what an amazing Native!

  • Native Americans are certainly startin to make a name for themselves. There have been 3 girls basketball championship teams in the last 4 years in New Mexico in classes 2A, 3A, 4A, & 5A...

  • I'm 3 years old and run a 26:48 10000 meter, and a 9 second 100m. Im gonna the 3rd American to win the 10000m behind billy mills and the queer a few comments down. -.-

  • @AveryJS3 Good luck to you.

  • Announcer was fired for losing his composure.

  • Truly divine. Each and every time I watch this (at least a hundred in three years) I get tears in my eyes. Call me a sap -- this is such a beautiful moment in human history.

  • Look at Mills! Look at Mills! WOOHOOHOOHOOHOO!!!!!!

  • This final lap was actually VERY similar to the way that Dave Wottle won the 800 meters in the 1972 games, coming from behind and passing (actually 3 instead of just 2) opposing runners.

  • 1:08 EHOOHOOHOO!

  • One of the greatest things I've ever seen

  • hell yeah all native americans are gifted natural runners.....

  • Well, what would you do if you had white men chasing you on horses and Winchester rifles ..

  • Feel free to call me names because i really dont care. The only thing you are accomplishing is giving me a reason for suicide.

  • if you're only 12 and run a 10 second 100m everyone would already know who you are.

  • @UnnamedWebUser. Wow look at mr big shot over here

  • 28:24... amazing at the time, last place nowadays

  • @cwarcarblue11 lol.

    it's true

  • impressive

  • "Look at Mm..."

"Look at Mills, Look at Mills! ... uhuhuhuhu"

  • I got passed like that last year and lost regionals. Next year I'll win

  • I run cross country. My fastest mile is 6:38, 2 miles 13:48, and 3 mile 20:50. I run 100m in track in 10 seconds and my dream is to become the 2nd American ever to win the Olympic 10,000. Oh yeah, and I'm 12.

  • @UnnamedWebUser

    ok bud, i smell bullshit.

Nobody on here cares what your "prs" are anyways. We are here to watch billy mills win gold, not to hear some kid make up prs and brag about what he is going to do...

  • @h8erguy im not lying. and i dont care i just thought that maybe i prove people like you wrong one day.

  • @UnnamedWebUser

youre 12 and you can do 100m in 10 seconds? ok bud. Plus im pretty sure if you could do that you wouldn't be trying to become a 10,000m runner in the first place. Youre a fucking idiot

  • @h8erguy okay so that was a lie but the rest is true and dont call me an idiot because im not one. And who are you to tell me i cant do something? I can be whatever i want to be if i commit to it. You just wait. I'll be there one day.

  • @UnnamedWebUser Haha I love how you just admitted to lying.

    *tsk tsk*. Only on YouTube.

  • @UnnamedWebUser GET REAL

  • @mrumpire2003 I AM REAL

  • BILL MILLS FTW, HERO!

  • I have a fast kick like this. Am only in low level athletics (still infinitely harder than casual running!) and I only race over 5000m or less, but I either stuff myself in front or get left behind... I turn 20th place into 8th place, etc. I need to believe and run a bit closer, hang onto their asses and bolt home like this. It's bloody tough!

  • He's running on his toes he looks like a deer!

  • Eagle Butte SD

  • Native Pride!!

  • Billy Mills is Billy Miles.

    That should be his nickname!

  • Thats motivation for your ass right there!!

  • Couldn't ever like this enough.

  • One of the fastest kicks ever. Looks like he was shot out of a cannon the last 50 meters. If you watch it at full speed his legs almost look like when roadrunner on the cartoon runs... And the commentators are priceless!

  • Awesome kick give me chills every time

  • my god that ghomodi guy (dont know speling) pushed back then, and he did it with steve prefontaine back in '72, that dirty dog

  • ron clarke and gahmoudi disliked this

  • That's the kind of kick where you mind just goes blank and your body goes numb and all you know is that finish line. Greatest kick ever!

  • This is the best race ever, but someone has seriously botched the editing of this clip! After the voiceover around 50 seconds in, the audio is seriously out of sync - it sounds like the announcer is watching on tape delay. The version posted by myronyamaha has it right.

  • Pity Halberg didn't do very well in this one.

  • The best race ever ran by man!

  • Comment removed

  • this gets me EVERY time. :')

  • now if only we could get more announcers with as much enthusiasm as this.

  • Every time I watch this. It always keeps me wanting to run. Its suspense never seems to fail. I love to run.

  • hw abt karunaratna who finished last, wat a courages soul...

  • Anyone else get the impression the primary announcer had it wrong. At the end, he says "Can Ron Clark catch Zamudi (sp?),..he's coming up, he's passing Zamudi...". Only after the other guys gets all excited and says to look at Mills does he apparently understand it's MIlls who's actually passing everyone. He says there "It MIGHT be Mills!"? If so, he must've been might embarrassed.

  • Gah! That makes me tear up every time I watch it!!!! His kick at the end amazes me and how high he raises his knees in his stride is sheer power!!!! What a stride too!!!! Simply amaZING!!!!

  • Billy Mills, my athletic hero...

  • Can we change this one from Like to Love somehow?

  • Makes me proud of both of the nations I represent. Lakota-US People. Fitness and health are everything in life. Don't let anyone tell you different. I love you Billy Mills. You have served your people well. Keep up the good work. My kids appreciate everything that you stand for in our family.

    Washte!

  • For once, the Indians won! :-)

  • @outlaw6066 wrong!..NATIVE AMERICAN

  • @outlaw6066 Damn strait bro...Mills has a wicked kick.

  • @outlaw6066 can't forget jim thorpe: NFL player, MLB player, olympic gold medalist in decathlon and pentathlon

  • I got the chills! League is this Monday and coach sent us this to get inspired

  • yupp billy mills a native american just like me and the only true american to ever win the 10,000m. God Bless You Bro!!!!

  • 1:09 Did that announcer just have an orgasm.

  • i get the chills when i see this incredible

  • this is such an inspiring race

  • that reaction was priceless.

  • Inspiring! Great video

  • THAT WAS JUST INHUMAN...HOLY CRAP HOW DOES HE DO THIS

  • press 5 repeatedly, about 2 seconds apart hahaha

  • Damn straight there's no dislikes

  • @BatmanRobbins270 There is nothing you can possibly dislike about this video. I love how he gets pushed out with about 320 meters left and doesn't lose any composure. (On the Olympic stage, I'm sure most people would lose composure after getting pushed like that.) Instead, he recuperates and chargers up for an epically deadly kick in the last 100m. Way to be, Billy

  • @BatmanRobbins270 Does anyone know in same event Sri Lanka athlete Karunanada lapped 4 times by Billy Mills? When all others gave up the race he ran alone. It says in 1st lap people are laughing at the last man. But he dint give up.. In the 2nd lap the entire stadium confused whats going on.. and in 3rd lap he ran alone crowd realized he dont' give up till he finish the race. And in his 4rt lap alone entire crowd gave him a standing ovation that exceeded the applause to Mills.

  • in 1912 lewis tewanima, a hopi indian took 2nd place in the 10,000 meter, which sucks, cause i know he could have WON! but either way, the event was never touched by an american again until another american indian WON IT!

  • loved that announcing. Remember watching that as a kid back in 64

  • God bless America

  • It doesnt matter what race he is, he's an AMERICAN! this is what we're about

  • @spacedude2000

actually it does matter, because not only are indigenous people around the world better runners, but coming from an opressed race, especially the oglala sioux, it matters alot...still opressed in their own land.

  • @PONYBOY430 Billy Mills is Sioux and half white. Btw it'ss not Blackfoot it's Blackfeet

  • @PONYBOY430 Bily Mills is Sioux and half white

  • hahahahaha. i laughed so hard at this video

  • Greatest Nish ever... had he had the training all these current baqstards had he would of wiped many records..... RED POWER 4 EVER

  • I saw this race in 1964 as a Jr. in high school. It is still the greatest athletic finish I have ever witnessed. You don't win a gold medal in the Olympics as a flash in the pan.The work and effort to get there is monumental whether or not you ever win or race again. Bob Campbell Okemo Vermont

  • Many called him a "flash in the pan." HOWEVER, in 1965, he set a world record in a 6 mile race (very similar distance), proving that he was the real deal.

  • right there, at 1:20. will be in my memory forever

  • I have goosebumps

  • LMAO @ the commentator

  • has to be the best race I have ever seen. What a great champion

  • To give everyone a good idea, these gentlemen are running at roughly a 4:30 pace. 10,000m = 10km = 6.2 miles. That is BLAZINGLY fast. Additionally, to conjure up a ferocious finishing kick to win the race when all of the glycogen is drained from your legs is simply inconceivable... This was all adrenaline and heart. I still get goosebumps. Go Bill Mills!

  • @MalkinFan25. It's the true meaning of pure focus.

  • Great video, thank you for posting

  • the guy that was shouting "look at mills" got sacked from his job for this

  • @btklamf Yeah, but I think it would've been worth it. I would've been saying a lot more than that in his position.

  • i just got the chills no lie

  • I shook hands with that guy.

  • my guess is that he wanted to win that race???

  • I'm loving the racial diversity of this race :P

  • Billy Mills was not an American, He was a NATIVE American, there is a difference!!!

  • @afromex1 weren't native americans from america???

  • @patriotsmakemesick The real americans are the native americans who were here long before the Europeans came. The are the real americans.

  • talk about goosebumps

  • look at mills!

  • Seems like Mills was either playing possum or had a huge surge of adrenaline at the end.

  • Two of my favorite finishes; this one by Mills and the 800M finish in the 1972 Munich Games.

  • Billy Mills: Beautiful Soul

  • An incredibly thrilling finish!

  • 1:03

    Epic.

  • I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVE that CALL!!!!!!!!!

    Whoa ho hoooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  • Greatest call in the history of filmed sports. Period.

    (Better than Al Michaels)

    great call!

    great race!

    great man!

  • What really sucks is that the commentator who screamed "Look at Mills! Look at Mills!" was fired for that. Really? that was one of the best parts!

  • @Compwiz1993

According to SI that was actually a fan yelling over the shoulder of the commentator. Talk about a great addition from crowd noise!

  • @Compwiz1993

They edited the story, looks like you are right. Talk about a dumb decision by NBC.

  • "Look at Mills!, Look at Mills!"

  • Mills shows perfect from coming down the stretch while Gammoudi and Clark bob their heads from side to side and flail their arms.

The greatest upset in track field history!!

  • Balls. That takes pure balls.

  • For some reason this reminds me of Forrest Gump.

  • God dame! that was an awesome Run! Billy Mills Representing us, True Americans - Native Americans Native Pride!

  • The announcer who yelled "Look at Mills", was fired because he showed too much emotion after the race. The predominant announcer who couldn't get anything right was kept on.

  • @NHPokerNut

Are you serious?? OMG, at the end of that race as Mills was finishing with first place, showing the world he did have a kick.. The camera is still on Clark, and Combotty (how ever you spell his name) and they never show you Mills winning from this angle.. But Thank you Mills for showing that US Native Americans can do it too... Congratz... On giving the world a great RUN...... Much <3

  • AWESOME; Wottle's win in "72" was great --- But this guy Broke on those Boys

like he was Chasing Buffalo. He Caught that Great White--Didn't HE??? Best Vid on Billy's Run. Twice in seconds you get to hear the BANSHEE

Wailing(announcer) and his insane Laughing at that which would NEVER be Seen Again.... The Wind Hath Seen Its EQUAL........

  • When the announcer can't utter words and can only simply make goofy laughing sounds, You know it's an Epic Moment in sports! "Look at Mills, look at Mills Oh My God!"

  • best ever

  • o my god these are the reasons why i run!

  • Comment removed

  • push me into the 3rd lane fine i'll just beat you in the 3rd lane..lol great runner

  • this really is awesome

  • The color commentator's yell sounds like Goofy.

  • Billy Mills' win in 1964 is is a real life Rocky story to me. However, the sound on this editing is delayed a bit. The main announcer in this video says "Mills is coming on" a second time after Mills has already finished. In actual raw footage of this finish, the announcer that says "look at Mills!" started saying that just before Mills passed Clarke, a few seconds earlier than in this video. A minor detail, several other videos of the finish have the same offset.

  • Pure grit and determination. A race of all time.

  • look at them! do you realize that they are on teir 25th lap and they are like sprinting lik hell!

  • Billy Mills Pine Ridge, SD represent

  • There's nothing really wrong with Gammoudi's running style. His head bobs but so what? He's at the front of the pack.

He had Clarke beat - he just couldn't see Bily Mills surging on the last 100 meters until Mills passes him, then it was too late.

Clarke was one of the finest distance runners of the sixties. It's a shame he never won Olympic gold.

  • "LOOK AT BILL LOOK AT BILL MILLS" rofl

  • BIlly Mills could really haul ass!

  • lol if Gammoudi would of kept his DAMN head still he might of won hahahahahahahhahaah.....LOOOOK at MILLS....LOOK at MILLS

  • natives always dominate cross country and some track

  • Billy Mills is my cousin...

  • That right there is an explosion of spirit

  • My favorite Olympic moment. He worked hard for this and he finally achieved it.

  • haha the chills!!! that commentator is awesome!! we need more of him commentating on races!

  • Still gives me goosebumps watchin' it. The US Olympic team didn't even give him a pair of sneakers (they gave them to all their runners). That's the man right there...

  • anyone who knows anything about what it is like to run a the 10000 knows how incredible this was. In that moment he was a man overtaken by his own destiny. Simple the greatest American runner ever. Period.

  • With the number of runners who were on the track field during that event, it is more commendable to all the runners that they did as well as they actually did.

  • wonder wat was going through his mind? true inspiration though!!!

  • You can take Miracle on Ice,give me Billy Mills. The USA had won Olympic gold before;no one from the USA has won even a medal since.

  • gives me goosebumps

  • I ran all my 4 years in college and I still run on my own. Every time I run I think about Mills and his movie "Running Brave" and the old black & white video on his 10k victory. I was very honored to have shaken hands with him too at Window Rock High School in Spring 2003. Well I ain't fast though my fastest 5mile time was 29:47 @ NMHL invite 2005. It was very nice of him to also start the Piestewa Games as well. Your quotes are great and I listen to them because u most definitely live up 2 it.

  • He was the only american to win the 10000 meter dash. Plus he is actually american. He is the person that can say when asked what's his descent. "I am american." U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wut tribe is he?

  • and still the only american to win the 10000 meters. legendary.

  • @EltBerserker an actual american too.

  • @EltBerserker true

  • One of the greatest moments in Olympic history. What a push. Wow.

  • One of the greatest runners of all time.

Best finish ever in running history.

    Enough said.

  • inconsistent but where did he get the kick after 10,000m ! Really COOL it's wicked and running brave the movie is fantastic aswell

  • His Spirit took him, where he had to go an what he had to do! That is still COOL today!!! 1st time i seen the Real Billy Mills. With His Spirit an did they FLY!! by.

  • Look at Mills, look at Mills! What a finishing kick after 6 miles!

  • That could be the greatest thing I have ever seen. That, right there, is heart.

  • just saw billly mills give a speech yesterday across town... really good talk, shook his hand and got an autograph too

  • Gangster

  • that was awesome

  • This video gives me chills it's so insane.

  • haha that commentator goes insane lol

  • What an animal

  • does anyone else notice Gammoudi's head bobbing back and forth when he runs?

i always notice it, i think it looks funny, but he was fast so it doesn't matter

  • Actually it does matter. Gammoudi is using poor form, costing him energy and time as his head bobs back and forth. A modern running coach would correct that ASAP.

  • Gammoudi always ran that way and it was good enough to 4 olympic medals, so to suggest some 'modern' coach would correct his form is ludicrous. You don't need to fix what's not broken.

  • I don't give a care if he always ran that way or how many medals he won, he is using poor form and when he does that it's costing him time. A good running coach would correct that immediately!

  • You don't care how many medals he's won? It's a good thing you (or some 'good' running coach) weren't instructing him then, 'cause Gammoudi was one of the pioneers of the African long distance running revolution that changed the face of the sport. Guys like you would have advocated fixing Bob Hayes sprint form too 'cause ran pigeon-toed or Michael Johnson cause he ran too upright and didn't get enough knee lift...absurd.

  • @oneputtsteven Sorry your foolish, this is a competition and there are no rewards for good form, it's racing, results are all that matter Would you rather have good form and lose.

  • Yeah and Gammoudi lost by the narrowest of margins for a 10,000. I wonder how mcuh energy he wasted that could have been translated to yards gained NOT bobbing his head around like that?

Name one single modern long distance runner that uses bad form. NONE.

  • So are you saying he lost this race because of bad form, or that it is one of many possible reasons he lost this race,. I might add many 10,000m races are close when they come down to who has the best kick.

  • He's saying that his form affected his speed - which is quite probable -

    that is about results

  • Native American and hes da shit

i met that beast of a runner!!!!

  • ahhh...reminds me of track season in high school.....Mills has mad heart in his running. 5 out of 5 stars!

  • gotta love the kick of a distance runner

  • heart of a champion...

  • He must have ate his wheaties, haha (the breakfast of champions)
