Native Americans are certainly startin to make a name for themselves. There have been 3 girls basketball championship teams in the last 4 years in New Mexico in classes 2A, 3A, 4A, & 5A...
I'm 3 years old and run a 26:48 10000 meter, and a 9 second 100m. Im gonna the 3rd American to win the 10000m behind billy mills and the queer a few comments down. -.-
Truly divine. Each and every time I watch this (at least a hundred in three years) I get tears in my eyes. Call me a sap -- this is such a beautiful moment in human history.
This final lap was actually VERY similar to the way that Dave Wottle won the 800 meters in the 1972 games, coming from behind and passing (actually 3 instead of just 2) opposing runners.
I run cross country. My fastest mile is 6:38, 2 miles 13:48, and 3 mile 20:50. I run 100m in track in 10 seconds and my dream is to become the 2nd American ever to win the Olympic 10,000. Oh yeah, and I'm 12.
Nobody on here cares what your "prs" are anyways. We are here to watch billy mills win gold, not to hear some kid make up prs and brag about what he is going to do...
youre 12 and you can do 100m in 10 seconds? ok bud. Plus im pretty sure if you could do that you wouldn't be trying to become a 10,000m runner in the first place. Youre a fucking idiot
@h8erguy okay so that was a lie but the rest is true and dont call me an idiot because im not one. And who are you to tell me i cant do something? I can be whatever i want to be if i commit to it. You just wait. I'll be there one day.
I have a fast kick like this. Am only in low level athletics (still infinitely harder than casual running!) and I only race over 5000m or less, but I either stuff myself in front or get left behind... I turn 20th place into 8th place, etc. I need to believe and run a bit closer, hang onto their asses and bolt home like this. It's bloody tough!
One of the fastest kicks ever. Looks like he was shot out of a cannon the last 50 meters. If you watch it at full speed his legs almost look like when roadrunner on the cartoon runs... And the commentators are priceless!
This is the best race ever, but someone has seriously botched the editing of this clip! After the voiceover around 50 seconds in, the audio is seriously out of sync - it sounds like the announcer is watching on tape delay. The version posted by myronyamaha has it right.
Anyone else get the impression the primary announcer had it wrong. At the end, he says "Can Ron Clark catch Zamudi (sp?),..he's coming up, he's passing Zamudi...". Only after the other guys gets all excited and says to look at Mills does he apparently understand it's MIlls who's actually passing everyone. He says there "It MIGHT be Mills!"? If so, he must've been might embarrassed.
Gah! That makes me tear up every time I watch it!!!! His kick at the end amazes me and how high he raises his knees in his stride is sheer power!!!! What a stride too!!!! Simply amaZING!!!!
Makes me proud of both of the nations I represent. Lakota-US People. Fitness and health are everything in life. Don't let anyone tell you different. I love you Billy Mills. You have served your people well. Keep up the good work. My kids appreciate everything that you stand for in our family.
@BatmanRobbins270 There is nothing you can possibly dislike about this video. I love how he gets pushed out with about 320 meters left and doesn't lose any composure. (On the Olympic stage, I'm sure most people would lose composure after getting pushed like that.) Instead, he recuperates and chargers up for an epically deadly kick in the last 100m. Way to be, Billy
@BatmanRobbins270 Does anyone know in same event Sri Lanka athlete Karunanada lapped 4 times by Billy Mills? When all others gave up the race he ran alone. It says in 1st lap people are laughing at the last man. But he dint give up.. In the 2nd lap the entire stadium confused whats going on.. and in 3rd lap he ran alone crowd realized he dont' give up till he finish the race. And in his 4rt lap alone entire crowd gave him a standing ovation that exceeded the applause to Mills.
in 1912 lewis tewanima, a hopi indian took 2nd place in the 10,000 meter, which sucks, cause i know he could have WON! but either way, the event was never touched by an american again until another american indian WON IT!
actually it does matter, because not only are indigenous people around the world better runners, but coming from an opressed race, especially the oglala sioux, it matters alot...still opressed in their own land.
I saw this race in 1964 as a Jr. in high school. It is still the greatest athletic finish I have ever witnessed. You don't win a gold medal in the Olympics as a flash in the pan.The work and effort to get there is monumental whether or not you ever win or race again. Bob Campbell Okemo Vermont
Many called him a "flash in the pan." HOWEVER, in 1965, he set a world record in a 6 mile race (very similar distance), proving that he was the real deal.
To give everyone a good idea, these gentlemen are running at roughly a 4:30 pace. 10,000m = 10km = 6.2 miles. That is BLAZINGLY fast. Additionally, to conjure up a ferocious finishing kick to win the race when all of the glycogen is drained from your legs is simply inconceivable... This was all adrenaline and heart. I still get goosebumps. Go Bill Mills!
I am just in awe of this video! You can truly tell the secondary announcer stammered in absolute disbelief as he couldn't seem to think of what to say....
...and yet, couldn't have said it any better! "Look at Mills! Look at Mills!!!!"
The announcer who yelled "Look at Mills", was fired because he showed too much emotion after the race. The predominant announcer who couldn't get anything right was kept on.
Are you serious?? OMG, at the end of that race as Mills was finishing with first place, showing the world he did have a kick.. The camera is still on Clark, and Combotty (how ever you spell his name) and they never show you Mills winning from this angle.. But Thank you Mills for showing that US Native Americans can do it too... Congratz... On giving the world a great RUN...... Much <3
When the announcer can't utter words and can only simply make goofy laughing sounds, You know it's an Epic Moment in sports! "Look at Mills, look at Mills Oh My God!"
Billy Mills' win in 1964 is is a real life Rocky story to me. However, the sound on this editing is delayed a bit. The main announcer in this video says "Mills is coming on" a second time after Mills has already finished. In actual raw footage of this finish, the announcer that says "look at Mills!" started saying that just before Mills passed Clarke, a few seconds earlier than in this video. A minor detail, several other videos of the finish have the same offset.
Still gives me goosebumps watchin' it. The US Olympic team didn't even give him a pair of sneakers (they gave them to all their runners). That's the man right there...
anyone who knows anything about what it is like to run a the 10000 knows how incredible this was. In that moment he was a man overtaken by his own destiny. Simple the greatest American runner ever. Period.
With the number of runners who were on the track field during that event, it is more commendable to all the runners that they did as well as they actually did.
I ran all my 4 years in college and I still run on my own. Every time I run I think about Mills and his movie "Running Brave" and the old black & white video on his 10k victory. I was very honored to have shaken hands with him too at Window Rock High School in Spring 2003. Well I ain't fast though my fastest 5mile time was 29:47 @ NMHL invite 2005. It was very nice of him to also start the Piestewa Games as well. Your quotes are great and I listen to them because u most definitely live up 2 it.
He was the only american to win the 10000 meter dash. Plus he is actually american. He is the person that can say when asked what's his descent. "I am american." U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His Spirit took him, where he had to go an what he had to do! That is still COOL today!!! 1st time i seen the Real Billy Mills. With His Spirit an did they FLY!! by.
Actually it does matter. Gammoudi is using poor form, costing him energy and time as his head bobs back and forth. A modern running coach would correct that ASAP.
Gammoudi always ran that way and it was good enough to 4 olympic medals, so to suggest some 'modern' coach would correct his form is ludicrous. You don't need to fix what's not broken.
I don't give a care if he always ran that way or how many medals he won, he is using poor form and when he does that it's costing him time. A good running coach would correct that immediately!
You don't care how many medals he's won? It's a good thing you (or some 'good' running coach) weren't instructing him then, 'cause Gammoudi was one of the pioneers of the African long distance running revolution that changed the face of the sport. Guys like you would have advocated fixing Bob Hayes sprint form too 'cause ran pigeon-toed or Michael Johnson cause he ran too upright and didn't get enough knee lift...absurd.
@oneputtsteven Sorry your foolish, this is a competition and there are no rewards for good form, it's racing, results are all that matter Would you rather have good form and lose.
Yeah and Gammoudi lost by the narrowest of margins for a 10,000. I wonder how mcuh energy he wasted that could have been translated to yards gained NOT bobbing his head around like that?
Name one single modern long distance runner that uses bad form. NONE.
So are you saying he lost this race because of bad form, or that it is one of many possible reasons he lost this race,. I might add many 10,000m races are close when they come down to who has the best kick.
I had the honor of meeting this great runner, but a better person!

He had Clarke beat - he just couldn't see Bily Mills surging on the last 100 meters until Mills passes him, then it was too late.

"I am american." U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

does anyone else notice Gammoudi's head bobbing back and forth when he runs?
i always notice it, i think it looks funny, but he was fast so it doesn't matter
dc3rvant3s 2 years ago
Actually it does matter. Gammoudi is using poor form, costing him energy and time as his head bobs back and forth. A modern running coach would correct that ASAP.
oneputtsteven 2 years ago
Gammoudi always ran that way and it was good enough to 4 olympic medals, so to suggest some 'modern' coach would correct his form is ludicrous. You don't need to fix what's not broken.
broadjumper1 2 years ago 3
I don't give a care if he always ran that way or how many medals he won, he is using poor form and when he does that it's costing him time. A good running coach would correct that immediately!
oneputtsteven 2 years ago
You don't care how many medals he's won? It's a good thing you (or some 'good' running coach) weren't instructing him then, 'cause Gammoudi was one of the pioneers of the African long distance running revolution that changed the face of the sport. Guys like you would have advocated fixing Bob Hayes sprint form too 'cause ran pigeon-toed or Michael Johnson cause he ran too upright and didn't get enough knee lift...absurd.
broadjumper1 2 years ago
@oneputtsteven Sorry your foolish, this is a competition and there are no rewards for good form, it's racing, results are all that matter Would you rather have good form and lose.
dredandmrbears 1 year ago
Yeah and Gammoudi lost by the narrowest of margins for a 10,000. I wonder how mcuh energy he wasted that could have been translated to yards gained NOT bobbing his head around like that?
Name one single modern long distance runner that uses bad form. NONE.
oneputtsteven 1 year ago
So are you saying he lost this race because of bad form, or that it is one of many possible reasons he lost this race,. I might add many 10,000m races are close when they come down to who has the best kick.
dredandmrbears 1 year ago
He's saying that his form affected his speed - which is quite probable -
that is about results
