this was performed at opening of a play for Freddie.awesome song.personal note to a close friend, this is why Billy never put it on an album.he wanted it to stand on its on.billy is extrememly underrated as an artist songwriter & guitarist
Just found out about this song with in a Freddie bio. Took me a third time reading. Anyways I LOVE this song it brings tears to my eyes. Knowing who this melody is written for makes a huge difference. Thanks Billy for loving Freddie as we all do.
I love the story behind this recording. Skizzoskaxxo really gives some great details about the song and its development. If you haven't read the "liner notes" posted with this vid, you need to.
I don't think of this as a tribute as much as a love letter to a dear friend. We've all had losses likes that...it's great someone like Billy Squier has the talent to put those feelings into words for all of us.
Thanks for posting and especially for the back story.
I was always disappointed that he was not invited to perform at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert with Queen. He cared more than most I would suspect.
It's funny, I found this because it occurred to me as I was learning Tie Your Mother Down for my band that Billy Squire would probably do a great job playing with Queen instead of Paul Rodgers (don't get me wrong PR is my favorite singer and I did a great job). That led me to search the internet to see if Squire ever covered a Queen song and I found he was good friends with the band since the early 70's. A couple hours of surfing later here I am listening to this... I love the internet!
wow! I have the Happy Blue album but, I haven't heard this song before. what a huge honor dedicated to a huge talent. Freddie and Billy will always be my most loved artists
Man that's fantastic. You can hear the emotion in his voice. I imagine that must have been a difficult thing to do- get up on stage and perform a song written for and dedicated to the life of a dear friend. He handled it very well. This is a great song by a great singer/songwritter/performer. Thank you for sharing.

Was this song ever recorded? It sounds like it could have been on his Happy Blue album.

I think Billy Squier is one of the most underrated writers of our time. He proves it once again in this song.
