Well, I speak Mandarin AND Japanese, and they really don't sound alike at all. I would say that's a bad example. What Chinese and Japanese do have in common is words like "Ai(love)" and "Mirai/Weilai(future)"

It's just a linguistic difference between the languages you mentioned. What's funnier is how Korean, Japanese, Chinese seem to be thought of as being "linked" somehow, even though at least chinese compared to Japanese and Korean is linguistically completely different. And as such your comparison is really not a fair comparison.

I stayed a friend's house in Japan and in her room she had a poster of different mouth positions for English sounds. Kind of scary actually seeing scientific diagrams of tongues and lips on the walls.

My friend teaching english in Japan actually draws the the mouth movements for her students. Two of her students are the champions in their prefecture for English Pronunciation. That and she gives them phrases like "Verbal Valley" that drives the other students crazy.
