@hamtuckey hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha... you're serious aren't you? may god have mercy on your soul....
If you watch one of the matches in the 90's at USO, the ball travels much faster. Why is this?Did they redo the courts? Was it because Sampras hit it really flat?
tennis in the 90's was much faster in general, mainly due to the balls being slower in todays game. look back at agassi vs sampras in the 90's and the rallies are super quick. in my opinion the ga game has totally changed
the reason why no one serve's and volleys is coz of the balls bein slower, not because the players have changed their tactics, google it and you'll see, its all about spectators now days and having a game thats enjoyable to watch
Yea, the balls haven't changed much. Courts have slowed down, that's for sure. Check Wimbledon in 2002. Lleyton Hewitt took it with playing his own game. Not much serving. Not much volleying. Slow courts tend to change the game a bit. I'm glad the U.S. Open remains fairly fast.
I can see why courts are getting slower though. With players that can hit forehands like Del Potro, I would consider slowing down courts as well.
@madaadda I somewhat agree with you, but tennis players don't change their play just to make it entertaining to spectaters. They want to win, and if they could win serving and volleying, then they would, but it is easier to hit passing shots nowadays, because of the speed and spin they can produce on the ball. BUT I would serve and volley everytime if I had Karlovic's serve. ;) hehe
@WizardsMagic007 As far as i can tell, theyd slow down cause youd need to exert more pressure to his them faster..imagine hitting a pebble with a bat or fist sized rock..lol thats the best example coming to mind right now..
i really hate how when federer was kicking everyones ass everyone loved him and now that one dude is beating him like almost all the time people are not saying he is done for blah blah blah blah honestly stop hating not just on federer but anyone in general give your opinion but dont sound like you have no sense
Well time passes bye and yeah maybe this was the match that gave him the confidence to beat everyone as today (when he loses with nadal) the others players realize that he can be beaten....his prime time is over.
It was over in 04 or 05 but he can still play. I think though many people say Nadal lost today cause he was tired, sure, whatever. But it shows he's not perfect so Fed still has a chance.
YEppp i agree with shawn here, i think grass could be anyones....if they play their best tho, espically sampras.....clay would be fed....and Us open fed agian .......5 straight says it all......
Sampras in his prime might still be able to tie Federer in his prime. Federer played Sampras in a little match this year or last and Federer said he's still probably one of the top 5 players in the world.
Roddick may have been number 1, but that didn't make him the best. He had the better year obviously, but Federer was playing the best tennis. In fact if Federer had beaten Roddick at Montreal he would have been number 1.
its amazing how much smoother federer is now than only 4 years ago. he was good in 2003 but his strokes now are so automatic. his backhand looks like crap here
agassi's way of playing makes the other player play at their best. He never had easy matches and when the guy was federer or sampras, they played incredible matches. On the contrary a guy like Nadal makes the other play ugly...
This is the match when roger had only 1 grand slam under his belt. Wimbledon 2003. I bet everyone was expecting Agassi to thump federer over the court. 11 Grand slams, 14 master series, 50 titles later we are not suprised roger won this match.
uh pete was badass in the 90s- those were his prime years i think. his serving i think is better than fed, fed has a good rally game maybe as good as pete's in his prime. it would of been a kickass match. sry tho he would of kicked feds ass eventually!! nadal is becomming the best ever on clay tho.
federer might not have beaten pistol pete in his prime but he definitely did beat agassi, many times, in his prime. agassi's prime was toward the later stages, though not in the last couple of years, of his career
jay how exactly did he beat sampras in his prime. sampras was past his prime in 2001. he hadnt won a title since 2000 wimbledon. safin and hewitt beat him easily in straight sets in the 00 and 01 us open finals. he had lost in the 4th round of the australlian open in 2001. surely sampras in his prime wouldnt have went titleless from 200 wimbledon to 202 us open. theres a reason he played his last match the very next year. he was past his prime.
Hewitt and Safin read his serve pretty easily , this was the reason they were able to beat him. I saw Sampras play Agassi in LA , Agassi had no idea where Sampras was serving , I sat right behind Agassi 2 rows up from the court. He was guessing ali the way.
Federer is good, but he won't ever top sampras or agassi. I can't call the shots now, we gotta wait till he's in his 30s to see how he stacks up against agassi or sampras. You all remember Andre is like 31 or something in this match. Federer is probably like 21 or 20..
Federer's play is so different now compared to his 2003 and 2004. He swings his racquet with even less hesitation now making it look like a big as sling shot. I always thought his forehand looked like sling shot, but now he just makes it better lol.

no way
The balls have always remained the same
its the court and the pattern of play i.e the serve and volley which is almost absent in the modern era of tennis has made the game slow.

madaadda 2 years ago 2
not b'coz the balls are slower its b'coz the surface is slower!!!
Nobody except Sampras used to serve and volley on clay then!!!
Grass was much faster in the olden days as compared to now.
Observe carefully in the Mcnroe Vs borg wimbledon video.
the balls skid b'coz of the surface.

On grass - tie
On fast HC - Sampras
Everywhere lese - Federer
IvanAndreevich 3 years ago
Actually
On grass - very very close but sampras's serve and volleying could make it a little easier for federer see wimbledon 2001
fast HC - Well they are both great federer has 5, sampras has five but federer doesnt seem to be stopping so he could keep going with us opens
Clay and Carpet - Federer
