  • muy desafinado

  • mamma mia a questa eta suonare cosi????

  • Beautiful. And I challenge everyone here to make it through a Bach suite without changing it a little, whether by intent or not!

  • Impresionante.

  • some1 had to cough didn they

  • 向大师致敬

  • with those errors , its still my favourite interpretation of the song . And he sang this while practically dying . He died several weeks later.

  • Interesting interpretation.

  • It is very hard, but because of the greatness of Tortelier it deserves much thought.

  • Interesting points All! Good to see some communication going on. My cello teacher agrees that an artist can deliver a poor execution during a "live" performance; very obvious and true - good point; no do-overs I guess; I listened to Ma, Rostropovich and Maisky play this piece and I guess the differences are subtle or my eyes are my ears and my ears are my eyes. The beauty and the essence of the piece is still captured here.

  • I suspect tedgoh and tiffincellist would forcefully anounce how dreadfully out of tune they are to an arab musician.

  • Trapped in duality, the world of opposites and relativity, and fixed points of views. Try listening to the music without judging it good or bad. Try listening with your eyes closed! What is the feeling behind the music and notes and the space between the notes. Just listen and move on. Is it really good or bad because you say so?

  • The execution can be good or bad. Try listening to music with your ears open.

  • this was a horrifying performance..period.

  • This is Tortelier last stand. The performance might be full of errors, but the deepness and "humanity" in it is unmatchable.

  • @FelipeValen I agree with you about the "humanity" element. I like to think of those errors not as mistakes, but sort of a humanitarian element to the piece. In my opinion, it kinda represents the player as ageing. Not really sure how to explain it.

  • @FelipeValen whats a mistake?

  • ..0:26

  • really outt a tune...

  • so sad that he is not here today he still remains an inspiration to many

  • how old is he again?

  • I'm not a musician, i've been classical dancer for 22 years... now i recently started to learn cello as well as violin... don't know nothing yet, but of all the great interpreters i've seen here Tortelier and Du Prés are my favorites.. of course i like Rostropovich, Yoyo-Ma, Casals, Prieto, Maiski and the other great cellist. But Tortelier and Du Pré are players than get to my inner soul easier and deeper..

  • All these are great names, but I would think twice about Prieto...

  • Completely agree. I've never seen anyone group those two, Tortelier and Jacqueline Du Pre, together as their favorites except for me. They were of the same spirit in music making.

  • La justesse n'est pas un modèle du genre, mais quelle interprétation ! L'intention est bien là. On sent tout le vécu d'un homme dont le corps est sur le déclin , mais pas l'esprit !

    Bravo.

  • Back in the seventies when I played the cello Paul Tortelier was considered to be the best by many. I knew a lot of cello players through my teacher and my symphony orchestra and we all thought he was the best. Even my teacher thought so. Paul Tortelier was our hero. He was so unique.

  • he loves the cello and the cello loves him

  • do you think..... that they......hmm no.

  • STUPENDOUS !

  • I have heard many, many rendering of these suites, and Tortelier's remains my favourite. Thanks a lot for this.

  • @swynhyrde completamente de acuerdo. grandes Janos Starker, Casals, Rostro , Shafran etc. pero siempre vuelvo a Tortelier

  • he has a tone you can listen to endlessly. . . . . . .

  • No existe cosa como Tortelier tocando Bach, the French School has so much to give!!!!!

  • madre mia es impresionante.. ojala yo llegue a tocar asi.. T.T
