I guess he did OK. Realised he was too close to the beach and did the best he could to slow down and avoid hitting it at a high rate of speed. Could a been worse had he not slowed down.
The guy totally blew it on Takeoff!! If he was any good in a twin he could have just pulled back on the right throttle and let the left pull it around!! Instead his fear WAYYYY overloaded his abilities and he cut back both engines causing him to loose complete axis control thus running himself right straight onto the beach!! POOR POOR FLYING. Probably a typical case of more money that brains!!
I've been flying both fixed and rotary wing aircraft in the ag business for over 30 years now with only the loss of one aircraft. One thing that has always kept me safe was by never letting my ego overlaod my ability. I heard it put this way one time years ago and have never forgotten it, "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots. BUT there are no old bold pilots!" If YOU FLY, NEVER forget that!!
very nice airplane, shame to see it beached. i think the pilot just ran out of water and was doing whatever he could to reduce speed before hitting ground.
Nice.....wasn't this the same type of plane Jimmy Buffett wiped out in several years ago? Flying off and on the water is a real handful, and from what I've heard, this pilot had never done it. Aside from losing control, how could he have elected to take off with the beach that close? He'd never have made it over the damn trees...
The pilot is a major hack. That's all i gotta say. Hasn't he ever heard of "abort takeoff" before? He never even cut the power! Unbuulliieeevvaabblle.
damn he was all over the place, but looks like they got lucky...does anyone know what the problem was that caused the pilot to execute such a landing?
The weird thing about this video is that the sponsons are not fully extended. It's a classic waterloop. He dug his right wing sponson dug into the water while turning with the river. This causes a lot of drag on the right wingtip. You can see it grab. Once it does, centrifugal force snaps the plane to the other wingtip, which grabs and reverses the whole thing. It looked like he was about to come out of it with just a couple of broken sponsons until he hit the shore.
Nothing went horribly wrong. The pilot ditched the plane intentionally, for the viewing audience. That's why they filmed from that position. Everyone got a laugh out of the deal. You can see the footage and guys getting out of the plane on The Endless Summer 2 as previously stated. The movie came out in 1994 IIRC. It's a great movie...
holy cow, yeah that is or was a pby, one of the nicest sea planes ever made, Maybe if he hadn't of put so much rudder in it wouldnt of swereved so much. Hate to think of the repair cost

The pilot looks like he was a direct transfer from Microsoft Flight Simulator to the controls of a real aircraft.

@aghelipilot Agreed.
When a pilot thinks they know absolutely everything, that's when flying becomes unsafe.

@MetalJaXtA666 Yep!! And I'd say this guy is a perfect example of that! Most likely a very common case found in aviation of more money than brains!
