No, it's not. The word Otaku is a very deragatory comment in japanese. It doesn't hold the same meaning here.

It has changed over the past 10 years. Otaku is not used as an insult so much now it is more of a labeling word. You find lots of otaku in japan but most of them are not full hardcore only lightly in to anime and games.
