  • His voice is always in my head.

  • I'm HOOKED!

  • Go to archive.org and check out Brock Butler 1/6/2007. This song is on there.

  • This song sounds like the sun rising over the horizon...

  • hadn't heard this one yet, it's a keeper!

  • M. Ward's version may have heart but Daniel's has soul and soul lasts for eternity.

  • one of the greatest love songs ever

  • It's through M. Wards version that I came to know of DJ. I thank them both for their great music.

  • You can hear his vocals gradually declining in quality, up to the last verse and chorus when you can tell his vocal cords are tired. I love this!

  • i had no idea m.ward covered this. awesome

  • How old was he when he sang this?

  • beautiful song. beautiful. i think M. Ward's covers pay him great respect.

  • One of his better songs! Saw the movie some time ago, it was good, but God I wish

they would stop talking about "this art guy," do you know what I mean? Those eyes he painted, that wasn't art, that was just like when a lot people loves to draw monsters out of their imagination.

  • m ward does an amazing cover of this song.

  • I thank Kurt Cobain for wearing that Daniel Johnston shirt a long time ago, it was my introduction into Johnston work

  • almost 33,000 people can't be wrong

  • HOLY SHIT

  • The piano reminds me a lot of the drum bit from "My Sharona", other than that it's a p. good and original little pop song.

  • Beautiful as gutting a cat while it's still alive, just so you can hear the horrific cries for mercy.....seriously.....listen to this shit.

  • @InNominus...You are so clueless as to the impact DJ has had on so many other great musicians. And maybe if you had to go through a tiny bit of the life experience he has you might just get it - a tiny bit. But based on your writing - probably not.

  • @kdy1111 You're serious aren't you? hahaha Let's give this guy a licence to drive a race car, or a tractor trailer, or put him in the army. All things he'd be brilliant I'm sure. Do you think any one of the people in those respective careers would think it's a good idea to let this guy have free reign over those things? Then why does someone who spends their entire life honing their craft as a musician have to take this fellah being called brilliant?

  • @kdy1111 And further more these great musicians, Kurt Cobain, Neil Young....etc sure I don't mind either of their music. But can you say they can play like Andy McKee, or Morgan Agren. These people devote their entire lives to improving themselves in their chosen craft!!!! It's cool to like this guy, but don't call him a good or brilliant song writer or musician. Go save a fuckin' whale, or eat some solar baked tofu, and leave the music to the musicians!

  • @InNominus 1) FYI - I kill whales for a living - I'm a Norwegian viking ya know.

    2) Tofu tastes good too, but solar ovens don't work so great here.

    3) I realized a long time ago that I could practice guitar every minute for the rest of my life and never be CREATIVE. I listened to the two guys you mentioned a bit just now - talented, yes; creative? well that is subjective and their work does not speak to me. Yet I am not going to search out their videos and hate them.

  • @kdy1111 you have a great point there. You can learn all your notes and scales and be a music theory genius but if you cant write a good song then you ain't shit. This InNominus guy is a turd sandwhich

  • @InNominus 4) You have anger management issues.

    5) Since you have time to spend on dissing DJ, maybe you should watch "The Devil and Daniel Johnston". It is pretty eye-opening even if you hate his music.

    6) You should not suggest to people what careers they should have unless you know them very well. It's really insulting.

  • @kdy1111 I have the movie here my GF got me to watch it, and to be quite honest. I thought it was a joke. FYI Swedes make much cooler vikings. Regardless of that, whatever creativeness you're talking about, is really kind of a lot of ramblings on of a mad man. So I guess that makes you an enabler. Do you like William Hung too? Cause that seems to be the path you're heading down. Shitty singers being brought out over the internet. "I'm gonna be more different than you!!!!!" Then they grew up...

  • this is brilliant.

  • Comment removed

  • i've listened to this dozens and dozens of times already, and yesterday was the first time i heard the original version. i actually like his voice. you can feel the emotion and when a song is this simple, it really makes you pay attention to the lyrics.

  • sweet

  • i think i have some dust in my eye or something...

  • His voice isnt actually THAT out of key, in tune enough for me to tolerate adn all the notes he misses still sound good.

  • why does it matter what someone's voice sounds like? can't you feel the emotion in his voice?

  • Wow! This dude is good!

  • disable comments: engage

  • scumdictator, if anything m.ward saved this song. daniel johnston is great but his voice is very under developed and out of tune in this song, i know emotion counts a good amount too but dont bash m.ward.he is doing a lot for the indie music industry right now and keeping great music like this alive. his vocals are great live too so its not pro tools.also why cover a song if ur going to mimic it? u cover a song when it reaches you deeply and you want to add your own twist to it to keep it unique

  • i agree with u on alot of what you said but in the m ward version i just hear no originailty in it, it sounds like he deliberately sang it that way so people wouldnt mind johnston music, thats whats great about daniel is he cant sing hes horrible but thats what makes these songs so great so real and true, m ward i think just made a radio n tv appropriate version , i like unique covers too but honestly it sounds like he turned the song into something made for a hairshampoo commericial

  • thanks for having oppinions worth a damb, thats the cool thing about johnston pages is u actually have to want to listen to real music from real people so i can respect ur oppinion i truely belive the cover did no justice theres one more cover that sucks of johnston n it also was recorded very profesional its of walking the cow, but theres alot of covers on here that are awsome oh johnstons work, i tell u this to show that im not just hating on m ward anyway ive typed anough later man

  • You're right. M. Ward has AMAZING taste. Meaning plus an incredible melody.

  • @Jimmyjewels m ward ruined this song , i hate the fact these wanna be musicians just stole his music n did there pop radio pro tools voice over it , the raw version is much better if ur not gonna do the vocals with at least the same approach u shouldnt be aloud somehow m ward turned this song into a shampoo comercial song fuck him keep johnston to the ungerground to those who actually listen to music on tapes not just while in the car or at work , there not worthy of such greatness

  • do you ever just sit back, and listen to the bull shit pouring out of your mouth lmao

all he did was cover a song he liked

dont be such a tool for no reason hah

your opinion will never be fact

  • a fact will never be a fact

  • a shampoo commercial. hahahah love it son

  • @SkUmDiCtAtOr everyone, and i mean everyone, knows daniel johnston was a great song writer but not the best singer/guitar player. his songs are covered a lot by a lot of great musicians. People who wanna keep underground music to themselves are a little selfish. if people like it, they should know about it. And m ward is anything but a pop protools shampoo commercial musician.

  • incredible, sensitive, brilliant

  • M. Ward does a cover of this song. It is pretty awesome.

  • this is good stuff. i just wish some of daniel johnston was recorded better. lots of his songs are brilliant, they deserve proper sound quailty (without losing their authenticity of course!)

  • Fuck this is an awesome song.

  • How have I not heard this before!

    Seeing him live in November!

  • you don't need eyes to see love...

  • wow this is a beautiful song. thank you greyfucker for posting it.

  • What drives me crazy is that I can't replicate his voice, no matter how hard I try. Everything Johnston does is one of a kind, and yet unintentional!

  • great song

  • were can i find it and wow got a negative rating on comment what for its the truth he did go crazy look it up

  • Wow. I'm really glad M. Ward recognized Dan's genius and gave his music the exposure it deserves. I'm stunned at how awesome his music is and his lyrics are.

  • wow had now clue it was 6 mins long is this orginal song ?i liked M.wards better, also does any one know were i can get the song about mello yellow when Dan fliped out and was in the mental ward?

  • mountain dew, and you can find it on this thing called youtube.

  • You can hear the beatles

  • i don't see the intellectual thing. anyone can feel daniel's music, I mean just listen to the obvious pain in his voice and in the delivery of lyrics such as "I guess its sort of funny now

Sort of like a plastic putty

Imagination will twist it with the facts"

    Feel it, son.

  • i totallly agree. danny's lyrics are AMAZING

  • Great comment shiftymerchant, I feel like Daniel truely plays music, creates art, & lives life to the beat of his own creation, it's a gift i think allot of us have as children but somehow lose as we get older. Daniel is no child, just genuinely wonderfully himself. Witch we benefit from, and are refreshed by and areinspired by.

  • Where's the ripping guitar solo?

  • The bad production is my favorite thing about daniel. It's so real, it's not for anyone but himself really. I can see him everytime I listen to his music setting in his room playing and singing his heart out and filling the room with magic that no one would really see for years and years.

  • lo-fi, shiftymerchant. lo-fi.

    it's a good thing, indeed.

  • Awesome. And I didn't realize M.Ward covered this either. Great surprise.

As for the whole "intellectual bashing" thing, I don't think its being intellectual to like Daniel. It's open-minded. Relegating ur taste to only highly produced stuff is just boring and ignorant. Plus, Daniel's studio was a tape recorder and a garage or his bedroom. If you dont like the production, at least recognize good songwriting and melody when you hear it, even if the voice or play isnt to ur liking.

  • @slytown you get it. the thing that really hooks me is his sincerity in the vocal performance. its like his right on the edge emotionally... his living the songs as he plays them. fucking amazing.

  • such a sad song

  • +

    +

´soi terrible aweonao me llamo eduardo y soi terr

  • This song is awesome. I never realized M. Ward was covering it.

    WOW!!! MIND IS BLOWN!!

  • You both need to get a life and stop trying to analyze me. I am not the one who leaves negative messages on peoples creative work. Oh and I hope I used words small enough that you did not hurt ur lil noodles.

  • You stand by your bad taste in music too. Comparing Trent Reznor to Kurt Cobain is like comparing shit to gold.

  • money is the root of all evil

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA You listen to nine inch nails!!!! go back to your hole, your not aloud an opinion.

  • SHUTT UP!!!!!

not daniel johnston i mean the arguing....

  • How is he an absolute genius?

  • I have to admit I had never heard of this guy until 5 days ago, and I definitely don't consider myself an art critic, but you have to recognize the tremendous talent. For me at first I was thrown by his vocal delivery.. But if you get past that (or perhaps learn to embrace it) there is genius.

  • su44us

i wish i could EMULATE his voice!

    so distinct and iconic

  • I can and it's pretty hard because you have to distort it.

  • His voice might be an aquired taste and you might not have listened long enough what with your constipation adding to your lack of patience and all. You still should recognize the writing skill. If not then I suppose you are going to write something better for us?

  • I admit his lyrics are interesting. But the overall sound of the song is a total joke. LastCuntStanding, your just a mangina who thinks he's something special because he appreciats something so "different." Please take the cucumber out of your ass and place it back into the vegetable crisper immediatley.

  • Wow.

Unsolicited and overamplified insults are the window to ones soul. The hubris to assume you have me all wrapped up in your imagination is hilarious enough without you displaying your unhealthy hatred of vaginas or strange sexual infatuation with vegtables.

Either way, thanks for the laugh smart guy.

  • Wow, you can use big words!! Good for you little guy! Here, i'll let you pick a lolly from the candy jar! Haha, i love pseudo intellectuals, their such drama queens. I dont really hate vaginas, you know, since i have one and all. But thanks for the psychological overhaul, Dr. If I were to set up a keyboard in my basement and throw kermit the frog a microphone he would be able to piss out something better then this shit.

  • Are you still trying to make fun of me because you don't understand something? I think you need to take some laxitive and sort your personal problems out. Feel free to keep the details of that to yourself.

Or would it help you to shut up if I left you with the impression that your words somehow had a negative effect on me other than distracting me from my current task? Hurt my feelings maybe? Is that your infantile goal here?

  • Do you think it offends me when you make fun of my username by calling me constipated? I never intended it to be a crowd pleaser, einstein. I think I'll be the big guy here and put your tantrum to end.

  • You name is constipatedclown. I suggested this constipation had something to do with your attitude. Please do end this moronic argument of yours now even if you need to blame it on me but don't put fucking words in my mouth.

Either way I guess I will have to logoff this email account now from your idiotic pestering. People that proclaim they are going to be the bigger person while insulting the other is very frequent here. Fucking stupid isnt it? Ya... that's what you are doing.

  • haha Lastcynic, he doesent like it so what, he just make a question and you are using that to show yourself that you know "complicated words". You should shut up or just write something like "Fuck you men go listen Blink 182" and end it there

  • lastcynicstanding wins with a knockout punch!

  • Oh I was just trying to help a clown take a dump.

Hostile clowns are the funniest ones. I remember an ex-girlfriend of mine accidently cut off a clown in traffic and he flicked her off.

That is a vision I will never forget. The guys face all scrunched up behind his makeup smile adding all his rage to that trembling middle finger. We should all be lucky enough to see such a thing.

  • Thats because he's an "intellectual" adlejandro. hahahaha, hilarious..Does it make you feel superior when you use big words? Are you still targeting my username? You take things too literally. I always knew pseudo intellectuals were deluded but not to this degree. Anyways I must thank you, for after I read your carefully crafted pretentious garbage,The constipation liquified and the same shit that comes out of your mouth came spewing out of my butthole. Thanks again!

  • who cares

  • Why do you haters even come to DJ vids?

This music is for people with heart. If yours does not work anymore then just go wallow in a hole. There is no place for your pointless negativity here.

  • "normally reserved for the dead", makes me happy for some reason, but, he makes me totally sad in his later stages of life, I hope he feels content, it's so hard to tell, the audio preview is freaky and out of context on youtube

  • GRACIAS :)

  • how old was daniel when he was recording these homemade albums onto cassette ?

  • te quiero, dan

  • this song is very good

  • M. Ward did an amazing cover of this on "Postwar"...Daniel Johnston is an amazing songwriter

  • Great Song
