thumbs up if you think this guys a complete tool and doesnt know what hes talking about. I mean great car. I absolutely love it. But get your facts right please.
If your main concern is 0-60 times because you have a tiny penis buy a V8 Mustang or Camaro. The MX-5 is a drivers car NOT a numbers car for those with tiny penises who feel they need to somehow prove something.
The MX-5 does NOT need more power and certainly not an extra 100hp. Putting the MS3's motor in an MX-5 would be STUPID. It would make the car front heavy and hence screw up everything that makes the MX-5 so great. Plus a lot of the fun is being able to run through the gears without having to worry so much about running way over the limit. Besides the car is plenty quick enough with 170hp.
@mrcardio9r I own a 1995 Miata with the 1.8 128 hp engine. It is the most fun car I have ever driven (and I've driven $1.5 million worth of supercars with the program World Class Driving). You just can't beat the sensation of rowing your own gears and heel-toeing your way through the twisties.
That said, the Miata's engine bay was originally designed to accommodate a larger V6 engine. It would be interesting to see the dynamics between the lighter/nimbler 4-cyl and a more powerful 6-cyl.
@milesdavisblackmx5 It's a simple point of ergonomics. The average commute in America is most likely longer than most other countries in the world, and with the traffic, you are inevitably drinking (and eating) while driving. Given this fact, it would be nice if car makers would design cup holders that help rather than hinder. Like I said, there is a cup holder to the left of the driver which can be used. The BMW M3 I just tested had great cup holders that actually fold out of the way.
can u open and close the top while driving? what i mean is, do u have to stop in the middle of the road to put your top on say if it starts raining while you're already on the road?
@asianshark I'd imagine you would have to stop or at the very least slow down. If you were going 80mph and raising the top. The wind would catch the space under the top and possibly damage it severely or at the worst rip the top off the car.
Example of what I'm saying would be if you were going 80mph and stuck your hand out flat against the wind then you'll notice that violent and hard push. Try imagining that for the top.
also- how is the interior "feel" does it feel plastic-y ? i know my dodge feels very plastic-y, really cheap feelings plastic dash and door panels and knobs, something that would easily break if messed with too much
does it feel sturdy? i need a really solid car, like super solid, the city roads will tear a car apart
@orangejulius072 Just bought an 05 reg limited edition Icon MX5, been the first weekend so still getting used to it. The interior is okay but the glove box can rattle a bit if there's anything in there heavier than a cloth, or a pair of gloves, that said the quality of the interior is fine overall, doesn't feel overtly fragile. To you it might feel a bit plastic but then anything more sturdy would mean more weight for those wanting to race it.
anyone know if there is enough room behind the seats for a large sized artist portfolio case? appx 2-3 inches in depth and about 4' x 3' i'm guessing in size
that would matter so much for whether or not i can get it
My Uncle races his GT3 with the Porsche Club of America. Since joining in 2005, he has seen countless members sell their Porsches for MX-5's and join the Miata Owner's Club. They still get all the joys of racing, but the Mazda's yearly running costs are the same as the Porsche's yearly gas costs.
I love these cars for the right reasons. True to British sports car roots with Japanese reliability. However, I wish in the next generation, they have a soft touch interior and get rid of that plasticy dashboard. Other than that, it's basically a modern legend.
Good review of the miata. However, I just dont understand that why did Mazda added so many cup holders if its such a true and proper sports car. According to me, this cars doesnt need few amenities in order for it to be considered a true sports car. Still a great car though and would love to have one.
Great roadster! It competes with most expensive ones easily, because it's handling! It's weight distribution makes it perfect on curves. Love this car; I had the chance to take a test ride but because space (minor disadvantage) decided to buy a Mazdaspeed6 instead which I love it too. Planning to upgrade wife's car for this one :-) ... AT transmission, she does not drive manual.
Wish I can understand why Mazda cars lost their value so fast, they are good cars indeed.
I am bout to get my driver license in a few month and im around 5ft 3in or so and i been thinking about get a mustang but i dont know if its a good car for my height. plz help

I've owned and driven many of the best sports cars available over the years, I test drove the Mx5 and bought it the same day. This is the best bang for your buck in the sports car world and one of the finest driver's car available. Those who aren't into the love of driving need not apply.
there's a reason why this car doesn't need another +100hp.. though having it could be more fun, it will defeat the purpose of this car. the lightweight (kinda heavy now) balances with the underpowered engine, which makes it perfect.
They neeeeeeeeeeeeeeedd to put the Speed 3 engine in it. In fact Mazda should include the speed 3 engine in all mx5s. That would really make the car fun! Please Email Mazda and let them know...
@lawrencelugar7777 dont underestimate it because its small and weak.... that has got to be the stupidest thing i have ever seen posted on the internet fuck you lawrencelugar7777 you logic is false
@lawrencelugar7777 I hear a lot of people talk about this car not having a lot of power. But if you're driving a Toyota Matrix and drove a Toyota Corolla before that, I think it will be a step up in power.
Certainly not LOADS of power like a viper, but I think 166? HP should be plenty for those not used to only say 135hp.

I still think they should have used my tagline..."Mazda Mx-5...For BMW lovers who think that 100 bucks for an oil change is bullshit!"
chrisb75 2 years ago 33
@chrisb75 Only $100? Frickin bargain you have there. In Australia, BMW charge $500 for a "minor service" (in other words an oil change)

Exactly. Its a true fun car for little money. Cant beat it dollar for dollar.

@chrisb75 a'd take the bmw, belive it or not in my country they cost pretty much the same 45 to 50 thousand and the new z4 is 55 to 60.

@chrisb75 100 bucks for an oil change IS ridiculous. Bmw's suck ass and are not reliable at all. Plus they look like shit.

The Miata is a lot of great sports car for very little money.
I just bought a 99 Miata and added a style/roll bar, an exhausts, and a racing steering wheel.
it's Awesome.
Don't underestimate a Miata just because it's small, cute and weak.
Pound for pound, or dollar for dollar...the Miata is arguably the best sports car.
