If you look at it, the C clip isn't what failed, the axle itself broke.. and yes, it broke right from the jump

These axles slide in, you slip the C clip on, then pull it out until the C clip seats. Then you install the spider gears and shafts. The shafts are what keep the C clips in place. The shaft breaks, the C clip comes off, the axle slides out.

Ive seen this plenty of times. Chevy uses C-clip style axles and the C-clips themselves cannot handle the abuse. that is why most people use pontiac rearends or aftermarket shit. Good luck with ur car.
