The Only historical difference with Australia and Canada is Vietnam and original immigrants (criminals vs fur trade/farmers). Our government has also hidden and been ashamed of any valour post WWII.
After French lost DienBienPhu in 1954, HoChiMinh opened Land Reform in 1955, Ho bastard killed 750,000 innocent civilians, because they were rich, vast land, big house and gold. Later uncle HoChiMinh pushed one million young men to fright in the South, during TET 1968 Ho ordered to kill and bury a live 5,000 Hue citizens.
I give all the homage & respect to the Australian Special Forces these guys helped us in Vietnam in almost everyway that they could & we can't thank them enough...
@kdolo100 They were main force Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army soldiers of 275 Regiment. D445 the local guerilla battalion only became involved towards the end of the battle and were decimated by the APC relief force. D445 were coming around to completely surround D Coy, 6RAR when they ran into the APC force. Vietnamese forces fighting at Long Tan against D Coy - 1,600 x 275 Main Force VC, 500 x NVA 45 Regiment, 550 x D445 VC Battalion.
This battle was one of toughest battles Australians have ever fought. The combat was just the first part, then came those who claimed the Aussies shot POW's. This is not true. These are lies made up by the Communist "Peace Protesters". The last phase of the battle was fighting the Australian government. They deny medals to those who earned them.
There was no mention that the KIWI'S were the ones firing the artillery. There would of been a lot more Australian soldiers killed had the artillery support not been there to assist in the first place.
@olkilldevil20 There was 1 x New Zealand artillery battery 161 Fd Bty, 2 x Australian artillery batterys 103 Fd Bty & 105 Fd Bty (all 105mm howitzers) and also an American artillery battery A Bty, 2/35th Howitzer Battalion (155m M109 howitzers) - in support of D Coy, 6RAR during the battle.
@olkilldevil20 Yes the KIWI'S were verry helpful in there arty support. but that in no way takes away from the courage of the 106 aussies on the ground against such odds its a miriacle they were not wiped out to a man because logicly thats what would happen just goes to show no matter what the odds to never give up.
@vincevince801 Yes you idiot! They fought in ww1 ww2 vietnam. I can't belive you would even ask that. You seriously need to learn some history. Australia is known for having some of the hardest fighting men in history. God it people like you that make me feel like theres no hope for humanity.
Yes smartarse Australia does have an Army. Are you trying to be funny or are you monumentally stupid. Australia is the only country in the world that has fought alongside the US in all its major conflicts since WW1.
Australia lost more men in WW1 per head of population than any other nation.
We were involved in WW2 from the start in 1939.
We supported the US in Korea, Vietnam, both Iraq wars & Afghanistan.
Im a pom and i would to thank all the past, and current members of the australian armed forces. You have always stood by britain in conflicts and many of you have died because of it,and our government mostly gave you the shit end of the stick for it.once again thank you very much for standing by us,eventhough you owe us nothing.
When we (U.S.) ran secret recon missions into Cambodia, and our government could not fly in to support us (due to diplomatic red tape), there were Australian pilots who would disobey direct orders to fly in to support us by air. So I just want to say, god bless those pilots for what you did and I'll always support the Aussies
God bless these brave Aussies. You stepped up when a friend needed you and got the cold shoulder for it. You have here a very grateful American. Thank God we have friends like these Aussies!!!
In 1966 journalist Gerald Stone described tactics then being used by Australian soldiers newly arrived in Vietnam:
“ The Australian battalion has been described ...as the safest combat force in Vietnam... It is widely felt that the Australians have shown themselves able to give chase to the guerillas without exposing themselves to the lethal ambushes that have claimed so many American dead... "
Without us the Vietcong would have overrun the south in 1968-69'
Interesting attention to detail in the re-enactment scenes that show Owen guns and Italian 105mm howitzers in action. Both these items were withdrawn from use about a year after Long Tan and it would have been very easy for them to have been omitted from the modern filming.
@TheDevenrocks Yep, lots were killed as well. The Australian Army excelled in Vietnam, mainly because of the terrain is like that in a lot of Australia and a lot of the Troops were veterans of jungle warfare in Malaysia and Indonesia.
These Aussie boys were desendents of a former British Penal Colony ....of course they were going to kick your ass....think about it...NVA probably had already figured this out, but got caught with their pants down.
after 40 years the hero still have to tear... must really be a hell hole.
i wonder when will they do a doc about the south vietnamese soilders who did most of the fighting too....who have to stay n take full punishment by the vietcong???
@hungmetie The country isnt that bad i visited a while back got a culture shock and a history lesson. put it this way after talking to these people i respect vietcong and NVA more than the allies.
All the comments here have merit and are worthy-how bout we tell the story of all the other battles as well...Like 2RAR in operation 'coburg'...1968...we need to document all battles in Vietnam before all these diggers expire...once they go they are the last of the old school diggers...least we forget.
@Ellie2009ish I come from a Military family in Aussie and served as a reservist so please believe me when I say there is a lot of professional courtesy and respect extended between the USA (sepos - its an endearing term) and Aussies.
@EvKrusty Settle down, champ. Everyone knows that anyway, it's taught in schools here. Seriously, every time you kiwis miss out on a mention you all jump up and down like its the end of the world lol
doesn't it make u feel silly. You get your champion, I'll get mine. whoever wins, wins! no need for many to die over it. the vietnamese won the war, but the aussies gave them the fight of their life.
Illegal refugees get treated better then these lads When we will learn to stand up to the white ants from within this country. Today I remember Long Tan and these blokes my heroes. Lest We Forget.
My mother in law and her children had tied to those VC who fought in those war between 1966-1973. One time when i was alone with her, I asked her about the war, she told me briefly about helicopter dropped off the troops right in front of her house and these troops started search her house....her story was quickly hush off by her children (brothers in law and sisters in law). She is 84yo and live in Long An all her life. Every where i go i felt like someone watch behind my back.
I never knew just how shit our government is until I did Australian History for school which was ironically required by the government. I mean this is just ridiculous
Good allies always, and with great sacrifices having been made often; the Australians will always be among our greatest friends. I only am sorry we have dragged them into an impossible situation. This has been neglected history, as is Gallipoli, in the States. Respect.
dont try and play down australias involvelment and success in this battle, the fact is 100 australians slaughtered untold amounts of vc and a lot would have been carried away dead and dying so no real accurate figure accept that is was a lot. They are true australian heroes and the vc payed the price for under estimating the expertise of our army. our army has always been elite and ye its always been the best. The only army in my opinion that matches ours with skill and courage are the british
@MrJamon79 Don't forget our buddies across the ditch, without them there is no ANZAC's. Respect to all who fought in Vietnam. It disgusts me how these MEN where treated when they arrived home. A national disgrace.
@OZ2CDO No problem with your forces disposition statistics I did not know of the NVA contingent. However Superior NUMBERS do not make an enemy "better equipped". Cite the ways that these units were better equipped than the Australian Units. Cite the supporting arms. The VC did not come to fight at Long Tan did they. Secondly WHO is Maurie Stanley? Remember Maurie (R.I.P). I am not negating Australian Courage either. Men on both sides lost their lives, right.
i think the media should do more to educate the australian people avout the australians in vietnam. they did poor reporting during that era. the diggers never stood a chance for a decient go on the truth. and it wasnt just VC, it was NVA as well.
i think the media should do more to educate the australian people avout the australians in vietnam. they did poor reporting during that era. the diggers never stood a chance for a decient go on the truth.
@MAKER6450 amen man our guys did what they had to do. it is clear victory through and through how can the vc even concieve of claiming that as their victory that shit makes me laugh compare the body count gee i think we killed like hundreds and hundreds more of them. when i did army reserve training the video and talk we were given on long tan claimed well over 1000 vc would have lost their lives and most would have been hit by something bullets, shrapnel. many died after leaving the field
@icwarhol You haven’t got a clue. I've spent 5 yrs interviewing Australian, New Zealand, VC, NVA & US soldiers & reviewing documents. I know the facts. Lex McAulay, Ian McNeill, Ashley Egan & myself have conducted extensive interviews & reviewed 1,000’s of documents. I spent more than a week in Vietnam speaking with former commanders of D445 & other NVA & VC Long Tan veterans.
