i love the esmeralda in the book yeah she was stupid for calling out phoebus name at the end which is why she died. i was p'd off. and yeah she was mean to quasi but thats cause she was terrified out of her mind of him but then she became used to him.
Poor Quasi...it breaks my heart everytime that all his fighting for her (though it was against the wrong people) was in vain. And to see her dragged through the streets...it must've broken his heart :(
I couldn't find any sympathy for Esmeralda in the book at all. She was a shallow little girl who just happened to be sexy and then framed for an attempted murder/witchcraft.
I feel more sympathy for Frollo and Fleur in the book. I mean, Frollo was a tortured soul who was torn apart inside over his love and his duty to God. And be honest, who WOULDN'T side with Fleur if you've ever been cheated on (i have)?! It's all about looking from their perspective.
@QueenSupreme89 She was SIXTEEN. So because she was "shallow" like any normal teenager, she deserves to die framed for witchcraft? And I doubt Frollo "loved" her, he was obsessed with her, if he loved her he would have protected her as Quasi did. You really couldn't find any sympathy for a normal sixteen year old girl in love with a man who didn't care for her, framed by a man obsessed with her, and doomed to death for nothing? . So you wouldn't care if any innocent died if she was "shallow?"
@ChristinasMinx You speak sense! I can understand people sort of liking Frollo for being realistic and complex but that still doesn't change that he is a creepy (attempted) murderer/rapist/neglective guardian.
I the original book, the guy who he threw over Notre Dame was frollos brother. His loins were broken, he was bent double and his skull was ripped open and empty.
I read the original 500 page version when I was ten, and somehow I understood the whole story. That was two years ago. In my opinion, they should make a move that is EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL so people will understand the exact story.
I agree with DaniMajor! In the novel, I really hate Esmeralda. When I was reading about how she was getting executed. I said............" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA".
In the book she is sent to the gallows from her cell, but in the movie she get's accidently killed and hanged. Strangely Djajli got hanged too because in the novel he was taken by Gringoire.
because Hugo wanted so. there's a nice idea here. esme wold have never accepted quasy while living, so that they had to die in order to be together. the outcast and the monster, a perfect match. soooo sad.
Esmerlada deserved!!! In the book! She refuses Frollo after the most beautiful declaration of love. But they have to die. The three of them. Frollo, Quasi and Esmeralda because they make a cicle. They cannot exist without each other. Frollo cant exist without Esmeralda, Esmeralda cannot exist without Quasi and Quasi cannot exist without Frollo and Esmeralda. And Esmeralda cannot exist without Frollo either. So...
But Frollo was stalking her, threatening her and scaring her in the streets, denounced her as a witch and put her on the black list of future arrests, stubbed her boyfriend in front of her and after she was arrested for his crime, he gave away her goat tricks to Charmolue and ensured that she would be found guilty.
Have you read the Phantom of the Opera? Well Erik loves her too. And she is kind for him. He is obsessed and he is crazy but she is mature and inteligent enough to understand that she had been kind for him, he would let her go.
But Erik didn't get Christine arrested AND tortured AND locked up with vermin for weeks AND sentenced to death. And if I recall correctly he did not prefer to see her dead if she didn't realise he loved her. If these had happened then Christine wouldn't acknowledge Erik's feelings either. Besides, Frollo wouldn't be satisfied if Esmeralda said, "Fine, I know you love me, can I go home now?". He meant to sleep with her first. Erik on the other hand changed his mind and let her off.
So after she was tortured and spent a month rotting in jail with no light and little food and water, and vermin crawling over her, he comes and says he loves her one day before she gets hanged? For me, there was nothing beautiful about the declaration, just a maddened deprived maniac obsessing.
Honestly I read the book and I hated how Esmerelda treated Quasimodo. She gave him water yes, but then she dis and dismissed him so badly. All of my love for the story goes to Quasimodo, maybe they will make another movie for theater going and make Esme kinder, Phoebus the player, Gringore Esme true love and the hunchback well he stays exactly the way he always should be.
poor quasi didn't know that he was attacking the wrong people!

Omg that is soo sad
if you look at it you could see djali following esmeralda even when shes dead.
She would follow her master no matter what.
This movie is almost as depressing as the book itself =[

Imagine what that would be like on film. Scary and rated R. But I like this version because it's fit for everyone.

This was the saddest sight of Quasimodo that I have seen. He was so devasted to see the woman he loved dead and being dragged like a doll.
