I seriously doubt karate will ever be popular again... Because people started realising there is nothing special about asian martial arts, its just like kickboxing with a pyjama. The only difference is the discipline part.

Karate has always been popular along side Taekwondo. Just because the UFC is all about BJJ, Judo, Boxing, Wrestling doesn't mean there's not millions of people practicing it.

Trust me Karate-Do is VERY effective in a street fight and even in the ring. There's hidden techniques in kata that would put any kickboxer to shame.

correction, there's 4 styles recognized by de World Karate Federation: Shito-ryu, Shoto-kan, Goyu-ryu and Wado-Ryu, but no one it's better or worse, it's up to you... i 've seen amazing people from other styles.

you can't punch in the face in kyokushin karate kumite because they have no gloves and they hit very hard. So it would be dangerous (and the fight would be short...) but you learn it at training of course.
