Ok ok ok . i dont what all the hostility is with Mark Love is for goign around here? Mayvbe its because i dont know the story. But nonetheless...Were all herelistening to this song because of one thing...We love The Beach Boys. Not The Wilson Brothers. not the beach boys exceopt for mark love. Flat out The Beach Boys. So lets leave the whole hostility alone and do somethign that actually matters....its a little thing called LISTENING TO THE SONG!...just a suggestion. -Tic
this is briliant!!! hard for me to believe this was 1966 was this in a small club? because i always assumed that back then you could never hear the music because of all the screaming girls
darrinbaker00 said " It's actually not a theremin used in the song. Just thought you should know. " please elaborate. I went through recording industry classes at mtsu and they said that a theramin was used in the song. Any info on this?
I think people are overanalyzing Mike's words at the beginning there. He wasn't dissing the song or trying to "make Brian look a fool". He was simply crackin' some jokes for the audience...who were obviously enjoying it. This was only the second performance of the song so as he said himself "I haven't learned it yet"
Still an excellent version, due to the legendary harmonies, and other reasons. Yes, the Electro-Theremin needs to be on it, though. Can someone please provide a website link, book, etc., which would explain, in detail, why the public does not like Mike Love? I know some of the reasons, of course, but I did not realize until recently, that most people loathe him so much. I constantly research the era, so It would be nice to gain some more knowledge.
@SeattleLA - Mike Love dissed Brian's creative development, destroyed his already fragile confidence, sneered at Pet Sounds, scoffed at Smile and has hounded Brian thru countless law suits to squeeze more and more from his 'contributions' to the early Beach Boy song catalog. Whatever input He had, he should have been supportive of Brian instead of de-stabilizing him at important times. It's borne out of an innate jealousy of his cousin's genius and his own control-freakery.
@prescient8 Hi. Thank you. You have stated this all very well, and explained it in detail. I did some research after my comment. It remains hard to imagine how he could do that to Brian, one of the best geniuses of ANY music genre. My aunt knew the three brothers. What a freak Mike is, especially toward someone who has mental challenges, and of all things, his cousin. How utterly unconscionable. I see this so much, and it is almost always based on jealousy and envy. After all Brian did for him.
@prescient8 Cause Brian totally didn't already make him a multi-millionaire, right? Mike Love... what a fucking peasant. Fifty years from now, when someone names the members of the Beach Boys, Love will be either the last one they name or the one they forgot. He's a nobody compared to Brian.
@prescient8 I like how Mike Love claims to have co written so many of the Beach Boys hits. I was just wondering why when Brian quit the Beach Boys were reduced to re-releasing their old hits on best of albums. Why didn't Mike churn out hits and prove how instrumental he was in their success.Speaking of instruments he can't play any and when they ask him to play the simplest of instruments he moaned. Also he can't sing why he was ever put in the group is beyond me. Poor Carl,Brian,Al and Dennis
definitely needed the theremin, and they fell flat a bit on the bridge... but all w/ good time I suppose. Mike Love's banter is as good as ever. saw them a couple weeks ago, and he's still doing his thing
What a find... never knew it was here. Agree with the comment on the theramin; extremely difficult--I've tried. No small task.
The vocal work is so honest, for such a difficult song. What a voice Carl has.
This live version helps me to hear it anew, like the first time I heard it; it is one of those songs that captures the good side of the hippie/flower child movement of the 60's.
(I did chuckle at the thermin bit at the end--you go Mike!
Ah, give Mike a break. I don't think he was being disrespectful with his "woowoo" quip. The theramin's an incredibly hard instrument to play and they were calling him out on messing up last time (the first live performance of the song they had ever done), so he made a joke about it. I wonder if Brian was at this gig, probably not.
@Gianthogweed - everything was 'hard' for Mike to play which is why he basically didn't play anything after a few gruff notes on the sax early on in their career.
It really sounds like mike is trying to distance himself from this song at the beginning so obviously this was before it sold a million and was recognised as a modern day piece of art........... then he decides to sue for credits.
Really tried to make this a folly with his insulting talk about the woo woo machine. Later, people called Brian all kinds of extraordinary names for using that woo woo machine. Mike didn't know his part well, and tried to make Brian look the fool instead of himself. Mike's an asshole.
I always though Mike was the real inspiration...he seems such a talented guy with his fine sax solos and fine upstanding morals. He is a real role model for all young people the world over......the world would be beautiful if all young people were like Mike Love.
Mike Love the inspiration? Are you effing kidding me? Have you heard of Brian Wilson?
I cannot even believe this! Mike was an indulgence at best. He turned out to be a real pain in the ass for the entire band especially Brian. Roll model? He married his cousin!!!
Get real mate I WAS JOKING !!!! It just sounded so absurd seeing it in print I wanted to see who would take the bait. I have met Brian and most of the guys over the years so don't worry I know the Beach Boys inside out. It still makes me laugh thinking Mike "loser" Love as a role model....you can sleep peaceful now !!!
I cannot express how much I loathe Mike Love, especially here in the begining of this recording. Arrogant, not funny, embarrassing and by saying this is crazy, was disrespectful to Brian. However, Carl is epic in this recording... so sweet and beautiful.
I think at 3:23 he says "was elation." Not sure though.
I've heard this song many times off 45's and CD's and radio. I like the song But hearing it the second time it was played was a real treat. Unpolished. It reminds me of so many garage bands I've sat around and listen to. Unpolished , optimistic and fun. Thanks for posting I'm going to go get a beer and go down to the basement to listen to the kids practice.
I don't get what everyones talking about. It sounds just as good as it could sound considering it was live, and still it sounds just like the real thing to my recolecction
If I remember right back then, the BBs wanted to stop touring b/c they couldn't do Good Vibrations-- probably b./c they didn't sound that good. Though not bad, not that good either as far as I'm concerned. They sound like they are working through the song as they go. They got it down better as the years went by.
It's one of their best songs, it's very confusing though. I have no idea how they came up with it in the first place, theres only five guys but it sounds like theres 20 people singing. Hard song, heck I think it would be hard to do if they had 10 people... of course they needed practice.
Well, I have been one of their life-long fans since the 60s. But I don't cut them slack. If you can't recreate your music for the fans, don't go out on tour and charge your fans big bucks. The truth is the BBs didn't have the greatest work ethic when it comes to practice. They became lazy and bored in the later 60s and beyond. Nevertheless, they could bring you to your feet every time they performed. They were one of the great rock acts of all time, but they could have been much better.
Thanks - amazing to listen to an absolute classic while to them it was just another song. Of course the Beach Boys had a great career, but in melody, except perhaps for the Beatles, there was no-one to touch them.
Yeah, it's like listening to the Beatles Anthology with all their early cute songs while they were so young. It's amazing how good they were even back then.

Without Brian Wilson you hear a lot more of Al Jardine trying double on Brian's leads.
This, I think, is a song they were frightened to perform with the studio boost. But, great job. These guys shaped my adolescence.
