Actually, I think the lack of so called family values and crime killed the Republican party. Between 2005-2008 it seemed like every month there was a new scandal with a Republican Congressman either getting caught with another woman, or breaking the law.

Many disgraced Republican Congressmen either lost their comity seats, the support of their constituents, disgraced their family, or went to jail. Some did all of the above. Just google "Jack Abramoff scandal" to see what I'm talking about.
