displaygirl has it right. it is, like most famous folk songs, not written by a single author, but rather is an evolution. However the most famous (pretty much the version played here) was arranged by Dave Van Ronk, covered by Dylan on his debut album, then quickly covered again by the Animals, which became a popular song, and is the version you hear on commercial radio.
I love how The Animals completely ruined the folk status of this song. Now no one can play it without some uneducated idiot saying LULZ DATZ DA ANIMALZ.
Kudos to karlycatherine...it's an old blues/folk song whose real origin is unknown, like a lot of blues and folk songs. Wikipedia has a great entry on it for those interested...it's like Back Door Man, Lil' Red Rooster...no one can claim credit for writing it.
ummmm Willie Dixon wrote Back Door Man and Lil' Red Rooster as well as many other songs that he GAVE to Muddy Waters, in fact, Willie Dixon gave McKinley Morganfield his name! Willie Dixon was jacked up by Led Zeppelin too!, but House of the Rising Sun is Traditional - no author known
dylan didnt write it...its an old folk song, the origins are debatable, it is feature on dyulans first record-great version-but even that particular arrangment isnt dylans own..not trying to be a snot-just thought you might want to know
ok first of all she's not wearing a dress, she's wearing pants and a tank top (also she was wearing adidas before so take that) and she's not dressed slutty. also she's playing goddamn house of the rising sun... rolling stones are not sad blues musicians. yousuck
LULZ DATZ DA ANIMALs, the animals tured the song from a folk standard into one of the greatest rock songs

Bob Dylan wrote the original House Of The Rising Sun in 1962. The Animals covered it.
