that's actually a pretty big apartment. a lot of apartments in Japan dont even have that bedroom. the living room would be their bedroom lol you're lucky!
SO SMALL!!!! O_o I live in an american apartment and i was complaining that mine was small but compared to a japanese apartment mine is HUGE!!!! I can understand that for one person they are a descent size but I didn't think that they were going to be that small.... I am pretty claustrophobic so laying down in the living room and being able to almost touch all four walls would make me freak out for a few months... I can do like 5 cart wheels in my living room right now... with furniture...
the horrors?...sorry whereabouts did you get to the horrifying stuff? sure its hard to adapt to a new place that isn't perfect but i wouldn't say it was horrible! nice to see behind the scenes though! thanks.
most ALTs in the JET Program get some or all of their rent subsidized, but it varies widely. I only paid about $100/month for my rural apt, but I know JETs who pay as much as $500/month and other JETs who pay nothing.
My office paid for nearly all of my rent. Though a neighbor who worked for a different school had to pay all her rent, and key money, and deposit. More or less she had to throw down $2,500 the day she moved in. Japanese apartments can be cheap to rent, but cost small fortune in initial fees and deposits. (Also, you never get your deposit back.)
As long as you don't live in one of the major major cities, or right downtown, you can find cheap apartments. Heck, in the countryside you can rent entire houses for cheap.
I've always envied ALTs that had showers. My apaato only had an old-school bathtub that took 45 minutes to heat after you messed with the clicky-fuse thing!
When I was a JET, my apartment was placed 10 feet from the city dump. Brown toilet water dripped from the apartment above me, mold grew around my shower walls, maggots flew out of my tub, centipedes and spiders crawled across my kitchen wall as I cooked, but "I made the best of my experience" for 10 months.
wow thas very nice looking actually!! i read some stories of roach infestedd shit hole jet apartments but im atually very impressed. . .quite impressed!!
wow - so jealous of the huge apartments - I would say the best things about those apartments would definately being having a seperate bedroom and living room. The kitchens were also rather large. All of the showers seemed to have windows too - which means less mold. What a nice BOE.
Oh wow, Im from Colorado too...but I don't work for JET, I work for a crappy English teaching company *cough*AEON*COUGH*...my life is like a living hell as of late...~misctube
I am applying for JET but also went online and applied for AEON. Should I take this as a warning to not follow through with AEON. I had heard JET was the best way. I am sending my application off tomorrow for 2008, I can't wait to get out there.
From what I have learned/heard/observed (one of my friends is in JET), JET is much better in some aspects. BUT, with this line of work its a total grab bag of happiness. I got a really bad deal, others get a really good deal (great apartment, good coworkers, they enjoy the meager wages (I don't know how much you make with JET). All in all its up to you...just don't regret your decision. All or nothing. ~misctube
Jet pays 3,600,000 yen a year. I'm definitely not in it for the money, I just want to get out of The United States for a year, and Japan has always been of interest to me.
Could you tell me a bit about the average ages of the ALTs? What would you say is the average age, are they fresh out of college, in their 30's? How's all that work?
5:04 is that a Dreamcast I see under the TV there?

The apartments are so cute!!! I can't wait to live in one. :) Why do you need a big bathroom? You just sit down, do your stuff, and leave.

ALT apartment situations depends where you get assigned to and whether or not your employer cares how you will be living for the next contract year.
