Excellent demo~! with a lot of very good techniques~! I think I am going to have to watch this one over and over again~! Perfect form, and stances~! This is what I would expect out of Japan~! Numba 1"IchiBan"~!
Really good performance, even the bunkai is practicable in my opinion, especcially the thros are element of Karate and this kata for sure. Thank you for sharing, you have my respect, oss
very very good bunkai, i have been 32 years in Karate and that was a nice bunkai executed at a speed that can be seen and understood. its demo for those people who dont understand. well done.
Very cool performance, and I like the bunkai--I have only learned the first half (approximately) of Chinto, but I will definitely be coming back to this video for bunkai
I saw a lot of extra moves which were not in the kata. Everyone has an interpretation their own. I did not see any shoulder or hip throws in the kata either. I have been training in Shorinryu since 1969. I am a Rokudan under Sensei James H. Coffman.
However the Kata Performance was strong. Our version is slightly different. But other Okinawan Masters of other styles performed their version of the same kata with their personal preferences. Well done.
This version of Chinto is closest what Funakoshi (Shotokan Founder) had originally studied and taught, before he made changes and renamed it Gankaku. This demo provided me a few ideas for Gankaku bunkai, as it is complicated to interpret, especially since most Shotokan bunkai was lost in its complicated history. I tried to study Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu, but their version of Chinto is too different. Thanks for posting!!
I liked this bunkai as you tried to apply various techniques in various situations. And this is good!
I only have to say something about 1 bunkai: as for my experience, you won't be able to block a real mae-geri in that easy way, so the risk is that what happens next would not be done if you initially do not block the kick.
very creative and rooted in traditional techniques. kudos to the technical correctness of the performers, how they move and the use of the hips/center of gravity. some negative comments made by some are ignorant of the recognition that bunkai is varied, fluid, circumstantial, there are different levels and are not standardized. Creativity enhances your sense of the possibilities and inherently makes bunkai fluid. learn from the varieties in technique execution without taking it literally
Me encanta esta manera de Bunkai sincronizado del kata Chinto. Soy de Wado Ryu Karate Do, donde denominamos a los Katas con sus originales Nombres de Okinawa. Enhora buena por la ejecución.
team kata is stupid, it misses the true reason of kara te I never did team kata I learned it old school with bunkai application and dnot turning kata into a sport, real kara te never was or will be be sport athletics.
@786myfist learn from the correctness in technique execution without taking it literally. I'm a traditionalist but don't be an elitist schmuuck. practicing bunkai scenarios is in recognition that bunkai is varied, fluid, circumstantial, there are different levels and are not standardized. you obviously don't recognize that this performance is full of "old school" bunkai applications. who cares if you make it pretty to compete. it's irrelevant as long as you are practicing good technique.
@786myfist you know, team kata teaches distancing and timing, if the team doesn't work as a unit, nothing flows. If the team "gets it" then things work very well, and the enhancement to ones own understanding of real world application cannot be emphasized enough. kata is not real world, kata is for show, and to give one a feeling for a variety of move-sets and situations. Expressing that any part of training is stupid means you missed the point altogether. I hope you understand>>
@HeltyraianCaresonen I dont like team work other people can do what they want not all my sensei do kata the same way so there is some differences in my peer karateka (fellow students) form, timing etc, I am Shodan rank and also my kata is better than theirs and my knowlege is greater because of my study in spare time. Also I am not fat and lazy like some of them so team work would never work with us, I see no benefits to team synchronized display of kata, kata to me is ME fighting MY opponent.
@786myfist that if you can't complete the form to real application, your martial arts skills might as well be called brawling, for that's about what they shall amount to.
Most obviously this was a demo, choreographed for entertainment. The timing, distancing, etc. were modified so the audience could 'get it'. The bunkai were actually pretty nice, and a refreshing change from the usual scowling and grunting muscular kihon so often presented.
Sorry guys. The kata is too 'wooden'. Application quite good though. Well thought out but would have preferred to see a little more flow in the movements.
i like so much this bunkai... is not a same applications like is possible to see on the net... but modern bunkai dont mean traditional bunkai but modern bunkai dont mean not good bunkai....
the application looked very good of what I could see. The only thing I actually saw when performing the kata is there were no hip use in the techniques and it looked very rigid. The style i have practiced for 17 years is Matsumura Shorin Ryu. It looked like a different version of Chinto that I have studied.
Neat choreography with four people. For the bunkai, this is one of the few examples I've seen of someone actually engaging their opponents while keeping knees bent instead of standing up. Kudos fellaz'.
I'm a Wado Ryu student learning Chinto for my next grading. It looks quite different to how we do it, but that's an impressive demonstration. I appreciate people posting things like this on youtube. I think perhaps the people who can't see the value of it should stick to watching 'Ghetto Brawls'instead of leaving ignorant comments. Even at 2nd kyu I've found myself using techniques adapted from kata in free fighting.
I'm a Wado RyuKa too, I find that various organisations have different interpritations of the same Kata, Ours is based on Shingo's version.
I agree that the 'Unresearched' Comments need to be vetted and deleted from YouTube as there is no call for them.
I also believe that in Kata, this is just the base, and can be used and interprited any way. For example a step forward can also be a step back a closed fist can also be a grab etc.
I think that the most important part about learning kata is your own interpretation. When you start to think of different purposes, it's your imagination that will grow: you teaching yourself.
I also do it according to Shingo. Very appealing to see this bunkai as it definetly teaches me a lot from a very different angle.
As Ohtsuka said, if I remember right, it's important to learn kata, but one must not be afraid to step out of it.
It is really heart-warming to see karate-ka respectful of other styles, it really talks about their good Martial Art education- that is how it should be with martial artists, but isn't always; I practice this same style under Miyazato Shoei Sensei, many times he talks about the great legendary Senseis of old, regardless of styles.
Good luck to you. I am sure that with your spirit and state of mind you will get very far in this wonderful Art.
Tremendous demonstration. The bunkai was excellent also. I study Shorin-ryu matsumura in WA state (nidan) and out Chinto is nearly identical. I will be reviewing this with a few of my fellow students to see what we can glean from it. There looks to be a lot there. Congratulations and well done.
(I don't even want to *think* about how much work must have gone into preparing that!)
Hi movinmeat. I study (Beikoku) Shidokan Shorin-Ryu, just as these guys do, so that's my chinto :) And once our Sensei told us (four people, including myself) to do chinto while arranged more or less as the guys here. It looked like crap, obviously... So yeah, must've been hard work preparing this.
Thank you. We put together this demo for Sensei Iha's 30th anniversary here in the US. In our style there is no official bunkai for Chinto. And even our official bunkai's arent meant to be taught as the only way to interpret a kata. Its good to get some feedback from real MA's out there so we appreciate you watching and leaving comments. Thanks again.
@Kaisertoji Wow...Its wonderful to see how well you can respond to comments. Unfortunately, you're about two years too late. In addition, judging from your lack of in depth conversational techniques, you wouldn't have added anything much in the first place.
no you cant see that this isnt chinto this is a wanna be chinto that destroys traditional Okinawan (i know its chinese sorry) kata and there is no application shown here all it is i pre-arranged... if your gonna do application from a kata as marvelous as this it should be spontaneous and instead of pre arranged and hazor is right this has no appliction to real world... if they did something the oppentents would not have gotten back up... they would have been controled and delt with ^_^ i rest...
thanks northernokie. doom and hozar you premies, please oh please tell us your martial arts background. any application or bunkai is shown as a prearranged attack you mallrats. I guarantee especially doom "studies" their "karate" at a mall at the number one aerobics franchise known as the great tiger scholmans. why dont you both get together and post some of your own interpretations while wearing your pink and yellow power rangers costumes.
haha your laughing at me for saying this is fake.... look at it they destroy a traditional form you tea-kwon-do lover and no i dont study at some place in the mall we have to study in a gym with cement floors and no air conditioning and enjoy it. while you on the other hand is probably in a school with mirrors padding flooring and a/c am i right?
o and why dont you go destory another good kata just so it "looks pretty" if you even knew one thing about karate you would know function is b4 beauty
Wow...it never occured to you that these people were doing this as a demonstration? Which would mean they have to alter the kata slightly in order to make it pretty?
The one thing I agree with you is that in real life, function absolutely comes before beauty. If I was up against real life attackers, I'd ideally have them all down in one hit if I couldn't avoid conflict.
Just curious, why does it matter where or what kind of environment you train in?
If you know anything about traditional karate you would know the ultimate purpose of kata. Kata is a tool to learn real world application (balance, power, etc.). If you practice real traditional kata you would understand that. Kata isn't like reading an instruction manual and all of a sudden you have real world application.
Working out in a gym or on cement floors doesnt make you any tougher either. It really just comes down to how good you are and by what i see from hazor and doomingdavid you guys love to just talk. . Maybe you guys should take some video from your basement or gym or whatever dojo your from and show what real application is. All of us would love to be educated. Put it on youtube and show everyone.
understood but kata is meant not to be a "application form" you are supposed to take what you learn from the kata and turn it into real life self defense... and your saying that we should put stuff up on youtube.... no thats untraditional... everything is supposed to between a teacher and his student not the world... o and kata isnt suppoosed to be pretty its supposed to be functionable to learn new things from it... im not talking about more kata im talking about karate ebusin.. not pretty junk
I'm surprised they bow how they do my sensi always tells me Military style bow which is feet together toes 45 degrees apart but hey that's just my sensi but then again i study Isshinryu
How good to see traditional Karate-Do kata bunkai done with imagination. Congratulations!I started Shorinryu Karate-Do under Sensei Shoei Miyazato in 1969 in Córdoba, Argentina. I am living in San Juan now but visit our Hombu Dojo when I travel to Córdoba.
i think they're supposed to be blocks? sort of dipping to the sideang throwing those elbows to deflect an incoming shot? i dunno, iv had a form for years that has something simmiliar, only the movement is more pronounced....who the hell knows with some of these movements
its fair to say that they are blocks, because in my dojo we use it to deflect an incoming punch. But in the example i have seen here, he wiggles his arms out of hold. Now if i was holding someone from behind i would have grabbed hold of my his clothing, or other hand to prevent something as stupid as that happening.
the example is more of a cooperative example. There are plenty of applications for that move. One would be as somebody holding your arms or wrists and breaking the grip, following with elbow strikes to the temple or jaw, which is one example of a diffent application. There are plenty more but really just intended for big boys. sorry
Oh yeah thats right! I totaly forgot that the Senak's are of Maywood Dojo! They are great, I got to work with both of them a lot at NTS this year. They are SOO funny!
Iha Sensei was just at our dojo last weekend along with some other "New Jerseyians." It was great and we learned so much! I love this style! Great job again!
Excellent Chinto Bunkai Maywood Dojo! I've been training for 12 years now in Shorin Ryu Shorinkan (well the first 6 in Shidokan). I always wondered what Chinto 's Bunkai would look like.
Interesting Bunkai. Much more involved and imaginative than most schools teach (which is basic, at best). Congratulations, I rarely see that. (Shorin-Ryu training, 20 years)
I train in NY now, but I started in Boston when in college, moved to LA for awhile and trained there, then back to NY in '94,here since then. non-commercial dojo, all Dan ranks. I am the senior student to our Sensei (7th Dan).
yeah, ive trained chito ryu since 1986.chinto is a kata that appears throughout all traditional styles, id say your shito or shorin ryu.whats really nice is the applications though usually kept secret i learned a few techniques by watching. Chito's version is very similar with many move the same. thanks for lesson!

the example is more of a cooperative example. There are plenty of applications for that move. One would be as somebody holding your arms or wrists and breaking the grip, following with elbow strikes to the temple or jaw, which is one example of a diffent application. There are plenty more but really just intended for big boys. sorry
