WOW. Where on earth did they find all these video clips? I don't think I've ever seen any of them before. Pink Floyd needs to officially release these early videos and performance clips on DVD, stat!
Maybe, but Syd Barret was an egotistical, Crowley worshiping, lizard sucker who hid in his mums house being a worthless twat for 40 years producing nothing for nobody.
@imperialpod Crowley-worshipping? Funny I've read a really objective biography on Syd - nowhere did it mention Crowley. Syd was into 19th Century children's stories - folklore and stuff.
Yeah, all he did was help create the first real change in music since the early 20's. What a loser. I'm sure you've done so much more with your own life.
Almost everyone before 62' was either a blues cover band (Elvis, The Animals, The Rolling Stones) or a bubblegum pop act. (The Beatles, The Beach Boys, or a 1,000 others) Luckily Bob Dylan came along and started a revolution of real song writing, but its not like Syd wasn't right there with him with sound manipulation.

I agree the journalist is mistaken. Two completely different bands with different approaches to music. The VU was very perverse, depressing & nihilistic whereas Pink Floyd was inspiring and imaginative.
Barrett was one of the few artists who realy believed in the revolution that was going on in those days. He didn't hide the drug use and didn't played the saint like many artist were doing. :) ... 1:29's the best part... in my personal opinion... it made me smile from deep inside my heart and yet moved me to tears as well... we miss u Syd!
Syd was an artist first and formost. He used his guitar just as a painter would use a brush. He focused less on his technique and more on creative and inventive ways to help him realize what he was trying to express.
True; earlier comment saying Syd could hardly play guitar is like people claiming Van Gogh could hardly paint...wasn't rated by the academics and all that. As for the notion he was a chord basher...well if that's the kind of unbelievable sounds that are produced just be bashing chords, then why doesn't everyone do it? Because of course there's things like imagination and intelligence involved, rather than simply technical proficience.
Anyone that says Syd couldnt play guitar obviously doesnt play guitar themselves or understand.. Syd wasnt Eddie Van Halen or Jimmy Hendrix but that certainly doesnt mean someone cant play? Syds rythem and timing was incredible, and if you listen to Take up Thy Stethescope and just listen to how perfectly the entire piece of timed and you tell me he cant play? forget you : )
Not sure why you seem to be directing your piece "at" me, after my post implied he was a superb guitarist, in terms of all that matters which is using it as an artistic instrument. Where did you get the idea I was implying he couldn't play? Because I mentioned he had great imagination didn't imply he had all imagination & no technical ability. No matter how much imagination you possess, you won't be able to get that out unless you've also got the technical ability to get it out there.
I respect your opinion. But he did with the guitar what not much people had done and haven't done. He was constantly inventing new ways to play. Messing around with an echo box, even using a zippo lighter to create other-worldly sounds.
Sure he wasn't a shredder and he didn't play fast and intricate solos, but don't tell me he could barely play the guitar just because he didn't play what you think is playing. There isn't only one way to play the guitar just as there isn't only one way to think.
I respect what you say there mate ! But the thing is any idiot can rub a Zippo up'n'down a guitar neck ! Ya know I think It's all a little bit where Barret's concerned "Who is or was this guy" ??? I think a large part of the Floyd thing is built on "Who are these guys?" Let's be mysterious ! I love Floyd & have done for years ! Barrett no ! If you wanna get different try Captain Beefheart !
i disagree with chizzers... i think jugband blues is one of the saddest, though most beautiful songs ever made. just listen to the very end. he is frustrated about the society being very stupid and being blind.. not looking further like he did.
Syd Barrett was a hugley talented and an influential musician.he was just so clever with their sound. listening to intersteller overdrive just takes me to anotherv world
syd barrett was a martyr, without him going crazy we wouldnt have shine on, wish you were here, the wall.
its sad to think about, cause hes the ghost that haunts pink floyd through out their career. you can hear syd in all the floyds albums....shine on syd you truly made one of the biggest impacts on rock music
your history, maybe. but in my world syd barrett, not pink floyd,is far more relevant than any of the four you mentioned. you forgot the rolling stones, take out the who.
a lot of shit talking about Syd, i don't believe he was schizo and certainly not crazy. Barrett was far ahead of his time, I think he had the most mental problems for that reason.
Thank you..finally Syd and Pink Floyd is given some credit for bringing psychedelic music on the scene..most people think that The Beatles were solely responsible for it
Schizophrenia hits people around the age of 20. It is a non compassionate disease that hits and hits hard....with or without drugs. And there is no reprieve. God bless Syd and his beautiful mind.
I, myself can unstanded-schizphrenia hit me at 20-and at 31 hasn't gotten any better, been committed twice. Nobody seems to understand or care-and been on countless meds-god bless anybody with disease-sometimes thats why i feel close to Syd-
Thank you..finally Syd and Pink Floyd is given some credit for bringing psychedelic music on the scene..most people think that The Beatles were solely responsible for it
This is the best mini-documentary I've seen on Syd/ the early Floyd. It's much better than the american version of the same show which was shorter and narrated by Dennis Hopper.
Hendrix had a tolerance to LSD and other pychosis inducing drugs. People like Syd thought they could take LSD like Hendrix did. For some people its not safe to do LSD, it induces permenant form of psychosis like schizophrenia rather than just getting high for a day
The usual crappy disinformation. Syd was mentally unwell. Did not go mad as that pathetic cretin said. Do some digging and discover the truth as to why Syd Barrett was dropped from the band.
Syd Barrett reclused from the world after this to a country home in Cambridge, he shaved his head. Many think that the drugs bought out schizophrenia and judging from interviews of him that wouldnt be too far wrong
I love that live version of Astronomy Domine on the bbc program, look of the week. I just wish I could see the whole clip. The first Floyd album is still top ten debuts of all time and to open with Astronomy...well I say..what a lift off. RIP Syd and Rick
AWESOME DAVID GILMOUR HAS A HULK SHIRT ON UNDERNEATH HIS SHIRT!!! real quick at 8:23 Its the hulk jack kirby art. they sold those shirts at the back of marvel comics in the 60's, that coupled with dr strange on the cover of saucerful and dr strange being mentioned in cymbaline, were the floyd and hipgnosis into comics??? That would be fucking cool!
words can not discribe syd barrett he was and still pink floyd and i am so greatfuled to him couse he opened my mind to alot of things if you know what i mean .
im not an LSD fan, but you gotta admire how one drug influenced a whole culture and music. early floyd, early genesis, the psychedelic period of the beatles, etc.
Actually, it was the drugs that brought them to their demise, Barrett, Hendrix, Joplin...
They all came up with their best compositions when they were sober, not in a dysfunctional drugged state as a lot of people think.
They didn't use drugs to help them make music, but so that they could cope with the pressures of life. And that only made things worse. And sadly still does.
Like all local "freak" scenes, the Pink Floyd crowd had a nexus; flats in London's Cromwell Road and Earl's Court became mecca for Cambridge hippies and budding mods. Mick Rock remembers two cats Syd had, one called Pink and one called Floyd, were still living in the flat after he left. He just left them there. Those were the cats they used to give acid to. You know what heavy dope scenes were like."
What the hell is that clip shown during See Emily Play?!!! I want to see the full think but i can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where was it taken from? Are there 2 different versions of See Emily Play?
The people making the programme knocked it up themselves because there are no clips around for "See Emily Play" (apart from that later one with Gilmour in it). It's just bits of other Floyd clips like "Tonite Let's All Make Love In London" mixed with Johnathan Miller's version of "Alice In Wonderland" and maybe some other stuff.
The show was complete crap, unfortunately. Sloppy, lazy, loads of errors, people talking who don't know what they're on about. Music good though.
they should have changed their name when syd was gone, like joy division did. then there would be far fewer discussions of the syd vs the roger vs the dave versions of the band. oh well.
is'nt funny that all the other bands were singing "i'm so full of shit i'm a sewer" - the same lyrics as they sing today on radio and tv, and they even get awards for it
Everyone before 0:26 is a square. But then case Syd.

didn't stand out in history? of course they fucking did. 4 bands that matter the most? lol to you maybe, that's the most random list ever

a lot of shit talking about Syd, i don't believe he was schizo and certainly not crazy. Barrett was far ahead of his time, I think he had the most mental problems for that reason.
scraleteagle70 2 years ago 9
Thank you..finally Syd and Pink Floyd is given some credit for bringing psychedelic music on the scene..most people think that The Beatles were solely responsible for it
O h yeeee
demiguido 2 years ago 5
exactly! i'm not saying that the Beatles suck or anything, but i think that there are more people to be given credit than JUST the Beatles..

Schizophrenia hits people around the age of 20. It is a non compassionate disease that hits and hits hard....with or without drugs. And there is no reprieve. God bless Syd and his beautiful mind.
richardbates1 2 years ago 5
I, myself can unstanded-schizphrenia hit me at 20-and at 31 hasn't gotten any better, been committed twice. Nobody seems to understand or care-and been on countless meds-god bless anybody with disease-sometimes thats why i feel close to Syd-

Psh, it's bs saying that LSD caused Syd's illness. The video says it like he would have been completely normal if he stayed away from it.
He would have had schizophrenia with or without LSD

This is the best mini-documentary I've seen on Syd/ the early Floyd. It's much better than the american version of the same show which was shorter and narrated by Dennis Hopper.

Hendrix had a tolerance to LSD and other pychosis inducing drugs. People like Syd thought they could take LSD like Hendrix did. For some people its not safe to do LSD, it induces permenant form of psychosis like schizophrenia rather than just getting high for a day
qwerly45 3 years ago 3
i wonder if his painting career had anything to do with the demise--for example, this is a theory of van gogh as well.
geekorthodox9 2 years ago
The usual crappy disinformation. Syd was mentally unwell. Did not go mad as that pathetic cretin said. Do some digging and discover the truth as to why Syd Barrett was dropped from the band.
77doriella 3 years ago 8

That would be fucking cool!

im not an LSD fan, but you gotta admire how one drug influenced a whole culture and music. early floyd, early genesis, the psychedelic period of the beatles, etc.
ktulu6 3 years ago 7
Actually, it was the drugs that brought them to their demise, Barrett, Hendrix, Joplin...
They all came up with their best compositions when they were sober, not in a dysfunctional drugged state as a lot of people think.
They didn't use drugs to help them make music, but so that they could cope with the pressures of life. And that only made things worse. And sadly still does.
The stuff destroyed their music and their lives.

actualy hendrix was heavy into acid when he wrote electric lady land but he recorded mostly sober

This series wasn't that good, I saw it all. Syd Barrett was awesome though, unlike the later Pink Floyd.

Funny, Barretts last gig with Floyd was in Hastings.
The same town Crowley died in.

"But LSD was also to be the undoing of lead singer Sid Barrett, who indulged in every increasing quantities to cope w/the bands success."
...hmmm, LSD to cope???
BlackMerta 3 years ago 2
You have to understand LSD culture in the late 60's.
It was almost compulsory and a necessity to escape the capitalist, commercial culture of the UK and USA.
If you hadn't had an "Experience", you were not at the same level as the rest of them.
Trust me, it wasn't the hippies either, you would be amazed at who was taking acid back then!
Triplesod 3 years ago 5
Like all local "freak" scenes, the Pink Floyd crowd had a nexus; flats in London's Cromwell Road and Earl's Court became mecca for Cambridge hippies and budding mods. Mick Rock remembers two cats Syd had, one called Pink and one called Floyd, were still living in the flat after he left. He just left them there. Those were the cats they used to give acid to. You know what heavy dope scenes were like."

I loved The Seven Ages Of Rock documentary I couldn't believe it them they talked about Syd and VU. Syd shines on up in heaven tending to his garden.

What the hell is that clip shown during See Emily Play?!!! I want to see the full think but i can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where was it taken from? Are there 2 different versions of See Emily Play?
zeppelinator 3 years ago
Yes, my eyes lit up to see that clip for See Emily. I would also love to see that clip in full. Always great to see Floyd stuff never seen before.
Ninyae1 3 years ago
The people making the programme knocked it up themselves because there are no clips around for "See Emily Play" (apart from that later one with Gilmour in it). It's just bits of other Floyd clips like "Tonite Let's All Make Love In London" mixed with Johnathan Miller's version of "Alice In Wonderland" and maybe some other stuff.
The show was complete crap, unfortunately. Sloppy, lazy, loads of errors, people talking who don't know what they're on about. Music good though.
MrBronson66 3 years ago
@zeppelinator that clip is from London 1966-67, a performance of Interstellar Overdrive.

they should have changed their name when syd was gone, like joy division did. then there would be far fewer discussions of the syd vs the roger vs the dave versions of the band. oh well.
