Ninemuses may hav the right aspect on this. sounds like speeding up and slowing down - the orchestra seems out of sync. I like this. at least they tried. BTW. I attended a music conservatory (mainly to avoid the military draft). My exotic teacher was Mme. Lidge, a great, great grand student of Liszt (?) She played like the dickens and would schedule a concert and not show up if she did not feel like playing that night.
An awful performance. The artist speeds up in the easy parts and slows down in the more difficult parts. And the conductor can't control the tempo either!. Very distracting and unlistenable. Technically, the performance sounds like it was recorded on a cell phone.
@rgwendland ...case in point? Your comments are too general to be of any value. It would be helpful to hear from someone who knows the score and can add some insight.
Give the orchestra and especially the pianist credit for even attempting this Scherzo. The fact that this is a community orchestra turning in a credible performance of this delightful music shows they are trying to keep classical music alive--and accessible to more people!
Nice performance! But stupid audience! They didn't even stop once they realised you were still carrying on! What IS that!? It is almost as if they just wanted to look good themselves by their reaction to your performance. Listeners are always trying to make themselves look good to others in the audience. They have NO respect for other people (those who are their to really enjoy the WHOLE performance or to play the whole performance without interruption). My heart goes out to you.

To "yomama6134": I have the Leonard Pennario version with the Boston Pops Symphony/ Arthur Fiedler in a Vinyl LP RCA Victor record (33 rpm); is an excellent stereo sound. I also have "Spellbound concerto" of Miklos Rozsa, "Warsaw concerto" of R. Addinsell and "Cornish Rhapsody" of H. Bath with the same pianist and the Hollywood Bowl Symphony. Do you want a free copy?.
But do visit the website of RUPERT EGERTON-SMITH, a young English pianist who also romps through this brilliantly. You'll enjoy his GASPARD de la NUIT too here on YouTube. It's GORGEOUS.
Moura Lympany's splendid 1948 recording really DEFINES this Litolff, however.
Those of you who love this work please locate the version by Leonard Pennario. He has the incredible ability to allow you to distinctly hear each of the many notes in this concerto and embellish each with the passion it deserves.
this is a marvellous rendition because the pianist is enjoying himself and there is a sense of caution being thrown somewhat to the wind. the earliest recording of this was by Irene Scharrer and that is really worth heraing. Katin is good, granted and has certainly been a credit to the English concert platform, but he simply doesnt bring off this work...a far better performer of this was Lympany, and English pianist i rather prefered to Katin, having heard them both live at differnt times.
So nice to hear you mention the wonderful Irene Scharrer - I remember her recording of this so well (in the 78rpm days) and, for me, no one has ever equalled her performance. Her performance was so exciting, one felt swept along.
I agree that he has rather let it get out of hand adn the conductor is frantically trying to keep up. He'd have come a cropper long before the end of the hunt I'm afraid. But its never less than inspiring anyway.
Having studied the section on copyright it is clear to me that I would be infringing such rights if I were to post the Peter Katin recording. I can only tell you that it is currently being offered by someone on ebay.
I do not know of any way to obtain a copy free. Sorry for all the inconvenience.
My comment related to the pianist but was not intended as a criticsm. The fact is that Peter Katin has been giving outstanding performances for the past 60 years and has not been rewarded accordingly.
Finally Litolff appeared! Litolff is my all-time favourite. In most encyclopedias he isn't even mentioned. Pianoconcerto's 2-5 recorded by Peter Donohoe (Hyperion CDA66889, CDA67210). Scherzo (concerto4) is best known. Read his biography - amazing what a turbulent life he led> a movie should be made. Bosworth is playing well. I hope the brilliance of Litolff will be acknowledged again!
Excellent. Had not heard this for some 20 odd years until tonight on the radio, Litolff Concertos Symphoniques No,s 2 & 4, Pianist Peter Donohoe; Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
I had to see if it was listed here on Youtube.
I must say, Richard does an excellent interpretation of this piece, 10/10.
¡¡¡Menuda obra!!!
I love this piece and I'm a violinist.. Great job and thanks. I agree that this piece should be promoted in current repetoire's and performed. Thanks!
This piece was submitted so that other YouTubers could benefit from exploring new repertory. Although Litolff is not one of the main "source" composers like Brahms or Liszt, his music still deserves our attention. By the way, ninemuses is a professional musician.

Almost a minute faster than some of the others.

Not a good version, too rushed, sloppy, vague and lacking character.

I really enjoyed this - particularly the way the pacy piano playing and its forward momentum keeps the orchestra on its toes.

A beautiful and inspiring piece of music.
What a great pity it struggles to keep in the Classic FM Hall of Fame - it should be at least a couple of hundred places higher.

The Peter Katin version with the LPO is more polished. Very neglected, very fine British pianist.

What appears to be monotonous at first is in reality complicated and exhilarating. Played well with good orchestral backup.
