The best and most amazing guitar players with amazing techniques likw holdsworth, tuck, frank etc learned simply by trying to mimick other instruments like the saxaphone and trumpet amazingly to me. Joe satriani got most of his phrasing from listening to singers believe or not which i do all the time and try to incorporate that into my own creations which i am sure a lot of you do. You woo millions with a few well plased phrasings my friends and not even be that good, thats what i love in guitar
I always try to look at the guitars player that are famous, but don't do a lot of shreding per say like Yngwie for example. I try to liten to people that have a more melodic aproach and still have solo's that get some kind of speed going. I swear if i worried about playing as good as frank gambale i would have had a stroke by now, or 2, it's just not going to happen for 90% of us, but don't worry man, we are all stars in our own right. If it sounds right to your ears, it is right my friends.
even though i am not famous or as good as probably every pro in the world, i get great enjoyment listening to these guys and drawing inspiration to make my own playing better and developing my guitar voice with the help of my hero's. I have long since matured out of comparing guitar players and focus on gaining knowledge and tips and such. It's so much better when you are focusing on you and no how much better other are. Before you know it, your doing things you never though you could, like me.
competition and "ooh im better than you" type people just breed more and more these days. cause the hard way in people want everyone else to have the hard way in while the easy way in people are considered posers or fakes. i guess what im tryna say is. the next time you come across a prick faced asswipe kid who thinks his cocky attitude is really just confidence. lay em out.
its like when a kid who never fights walks into an MMA class and wants to learn but then finds that he already knows how. and the veteran fighters who train blood and sweat there day and night dont like that. just like the cool kid in the living room playing dragonforce speed shit riffs on his guitar sees another kid come along whos only picked up a guitar twice in his life but has an ear for music and just digs it. Mr "i studied hard for years and learned everything" doesnt like that very much.
There are a lot of amazing guitar players. I consider myself fortunate to have learned first-hand from superb musicians who happened to play the guitar while demonstrating "negative stage presence," Tuck Andress and Roy Buchanan among them. I'd rather listen to a musician than to a guitar player. Thanks, Tuck!
all these stupid ass comments....this guy is off the charts, amazing...his playing is not "jumbled together", or "pretentious" or "self-indulgent"....its creative, improvisational and innovative....and the dumb shits that posted this nonsense suck @ guitar, garunteed

@stevenwhiteley I just listened to your music, and after that I realised your opinion doesnt count, if anyone on this page is a faggot, it surely must be you.
i swear i have counted 14 fingers on his left hand!!! he is that good!!! i am sure he invented some new chords too there! he is an amazing guitarist!!!
Why does playing the guitar have to be a competition?? I like how steve vai once said "I am always trying to better myself as a musician when somebody comes along who is capable of doing something beyond what I can do, I just find that as an inspiration, I would be a fool if I competed with the people I have replaced."
I'd have had to take that cock like axe of his and beat him with it, over and over, so that he could never be that much better than me again. That's how I roll.
To give credit where credit is due, Chet Atkins did the artificial harmonics on that song a long time ago, and I believe he learned to do it from Lenny Breau.
Still laughing about how he inserted "If I Only Had a Brain" in the middle, turning this into a Wizard of Oz medley. What an amazing, inventive player!
If you want less..listen to someone else. This guy is a musician of choice...don't listen to this guy if you don't like what he does. He's a freakin' Phenominal musician!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He might be able to play every note under the rainbow, but once again, I prefer less, as I said before, sometimes less is more. The actual song on Wizard of Oz is far more enjoyable, my head begins to fuzz out with this guys overload. Everything I have heard so far he almost drowns the song out with fills and rythem and cords and and and.
Everyone has an opinion and a choice of what they like. But what your saying is wrong because you don't understand that he's giving a demonstration to a class to let them know to be determined to be good. That was more theatrical than the studio version if you listen to that you will see that here he's putting on a show for effect. Plus you never compare an original song to a guitar version the way you did
Why can't I compare his version to the origional? You said I have a right to my opinion. There is a young kid with a video response above this writing that I enjoyed much more. Tuck is trying too hard, he is too busy, like a classical shredder. There is a time for silence. This is utube so don't loose it on me anyway. People slam players I like all the time. Opinion, different tastes are what it's all about.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to know the guitar as he does, I think I would enjoy it in a different way as all guitarists do, which brings us back to opinions!!
Perspective, people, think of the context - he is in front of a class of guitar students, he is telling them that he got to where he is through determination, hard work, practice, practice, practice. He has nothing to be ashamed of, nor does he need to be modest in this context. I love Tuck's playing, especially his use of chordal harmonics techniques that the late great Lenny Breau developed 40 years ago...
Immersion in your craft. Of course just above average talent helps but lots of motivation and practice. That really is what it takes. He stated that succinctly and I don't detect a trace of arrogance.
Eh, He's talking to kids though. I mean I doubt there's anyone over the age of 18 at a "Jazz Camp". He was probably just trying to get the point across. But you got to admit he is a sick player.
for those all haters who said that tuck is being cocky etc etc..try to read between the lines. he is actually saying that determination and hard work can actually overcome talent.. you guys are so shallow minded..and it's sad...
@donzzshaft You got it, and what Tuck's saying is right on. Talent is a great asset, but practice is easier to come by. So practice and you'll be better than a talented person who doesn't practice. It's that simple.
@donzzshaft They obviously weren't watching him play and don't know he is being realistic...because he IS revered by other guitarists as one of the better guitarist in the world.
@donzzshaft "determination and hard work can actually overcome talent.." He shouldn't lie to people like that though. it just leads to frustration, self-hatred and other bad things.
When someone's talented, we assume they're intelligent, socially adept, whatever. It may not be: It's not unusual for someone to be a beautiful artist at 1 form & completely uncomfortable in all others. I really got the feeling Tuck 'painted himself in a corner' here, trying to encourage his class to get all the possible benefits of hard work & to not worry about how more advanced players sound, for now. His choice of words was simply him being a bad public speaker. Still the truth, tho.
Well, he has an ego, but then most phenominal players do. He's good - at this standard, whether you rate him as one of 'the best' is down to personal taste. I think the message he was trying to convey was that anyone can achieve his standard of playing with enough effort and hard work - which I personally think is a valid comment. He just delivered it in a way some people would find arrogant I guess. I don't begrudge him for his comment or his skill.
I don't think he was being conceited. He was humbling stating what is accepted as fact. Almost anyone who knows anything about guitar playing will agree that he is one of the great guitar players of all time. More importantly, he admitted that he doesn't have much talent, and that anyone can do what he did, if they put in the work. That's all.
Something to keep in mind For all we know he spent the day with students referring ot him as great, asking him how he became great and what does it take to be great?
Go to hell haters!!!! Tuck is gracious and very humble....and duhhh this video is in a classroom setting...he is trying inspire...go back to eddie van halen where you belong!!!!
@nicolaus1972 I was just trying to be humorous. I was really impressed with your skills at playing guitar. I suck at it and trying to learn little by little.
makes you sick doesn't it? ah to have those long skinny fingers that go everywhere. heck, and to be able to move them like that. lol. this guy's really good.
I am sure that he is making a point. He says he had very little talent and a lot of determination. I think we can all think of really talented people who just tossed it away.... and people who had no business touching an instrument coming back and blowing us away....
He is an awesome guitar player. Unbelievable. He could work on humility, but, his words are true. He is exceptional. Thank you for posting. Unbelievable how he gets that little guitar to sound great (I know he has it set up like his L5, but still, that little things sounds great).
look are you all a bunch of idiots if you like his music then you understood what he said he was declared as one of the best and it took him a lot of practice to get there and with a lot of motivation he is saying i guess i am at the top of my game so shut up and learn something
I'd agree since he was in a teaching setting he probably didn't word it correctly he was indeed saying if you work hard you can overcome not having natural talent. On the other hand, he is he not a great player? It ain't bragging if you can do it and I'd say he's in a small group of REALLY good players so he's paid dues enough to say I'm a great player in my book.
Great artist, very generous with other musicians. I met him once in Leo's Audio in Oakland about 15 years or more past. He took the time to listen to a song I had written and gave me some good feedback. One of the greats, in all respects, and like he said, a very hard worker.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Mr. Andress, I get what you're saying about hard work...and I hate to burst your balloon...but Jeff Linsky is THE greatest chord melody improviser of all time. His "Wizard of Oz" medley makes this sound like a "Mel Bay for Easy Guitar" lesson. Oh, and he doesn't clam all over the place either. Neither did Joe Pass...or George Van Eps...or Johnny Smith...
Kwitcherbitchin. Simply by placing a single artist as "the greatest of all time", you have showed your complete musical immaturity and inability to see music as art, but instead as competition. Karma will get you in the end.
I think he just worded what he was trying to say the wrong way. Really, it sounded like he was just trying to say that as long as you work hard, you could become a great guitar player.
yeah that comment at the end kinda killed it for me, why not whop out your cock and show everyone how big it is whilst your at it. lovely playing though.
LOL! Maybe that is why he wears the really baggy trousers. He DOES whip it out but just not in this particular vid. Yeah, you'd think he'd know how that great part came out. Sounded COCKy to me.
well, i see it the other way around. someone who cannot deal with somebody stating the obvious (being a great guitar player) is probably the one who has insecurities.
lol it happend to me too , about 15 years ago...was it a guitar player? or a guitar world? or a guitar collection? hell!!!never lent magazines anymore!...
Actually, guitarists that go around telling people they're pretty good and then talk about other guitarists being 'average' or 'poor' is really fucking pretentious. The best guitarists are the ones not talking about how good they are- they're the ones that play.
But the majority of people who don't talk about how good they are, aren't as good as this guy anyway, and I don't mean to sound like a prick. I guess him saying that hes one of the best guitarists in the world would really only reflect his personality rather his guitar playing, although it would influence it, not to as much of an extent as it influencing his personality.
I dont think he is being pretentious.. its obvious he is a fantastic guitarist. hes basically trying to tell the kids there, that he has tried hard to become one of the best guitarists in the world (which he is) and if they try hard enough anything is possible is all. i think this guy is misunderstood.. He is pasionate about guitar and he has my admiration and respect as a fellow guitarist. although i will never be anywhere near close to his lvl :)
Fantastic!

@nicolaus1972 Most of us here believe you but if you could demonstrate that on you tube.. I sure we all love to see... it.
affnan 1 year ago
@affnan ha ha ha, really? well, I think I can prove that. Well, tuck andress plays the guitar 1000 times better than I do.
nicolaus1972 1 year ago
@nicolaus1972 I was just trying to be humorous. I was really impressed with your skills at playing guitar. I suck at it and trying to learn little by little.

that's the first time I see Tuck playing without his gorgeous Gibson...gosh he's incredible

look at those finger stretches!
mutterpukker 3 years ago 3
makes you sick doesn't it? ah to have those long skinny fingers that go everywhere. heck, and to be able to move them like that. lol. this guy's really good.
martinaxman 3 years ago 2
oh cmon this is TUCK muthafuckin ANDRESS we're talking about,
he has ALL THE RIGHT to claim that he is a GREAT GUITAR PLAYER which he DEF is.
even if it weren't for his "if I can do it~" comment
you have no ground to think he's being cocky,
he is one of the BEST (but MOST UNDERRATED) guitarists ever IMO.
shinkawasaki30 3 years ago
I am sure that he is making a point. He says he had very little talent and a lot of determination. I think we can all think of really talented people who just tossed it away.... and people who had no business touching an instrument coming back and blowing us away....

i have been playing the guitar for many years and everytime I see this artist playing...i feel like a big shit player..hahahaha
HE´S GREAT!!

He is an awesome guitar player. Unbelievable. He could work on humility, but, his words are true. He is exceptional. Thank you for posting. Unbelievable how he gets that little guitar to sound great (I know he has it set up like his L5, but still, that little things sounds great).

listen carefully dude.
he said, lotsa videos on youtube, and this is true,
people have said, that i am a great guitar player etc etc.
and some people said he has alot of talent.
BUT NO. i have very little talent and alot of hard work.
and it was lots of hard work putting all these together.
etc etc
but if i can do it, u can do it too.

"If I can do it, you can do it."
I think that makes it clear he's trying to make a point, not being cocky.
Jcooker19 3 years ago 4
look are you all a bunch of idiots if you like his music then you understood what he said he was declared as one of the best and it took him a lot of practice to get there and with a lot of motivation he is saying i guess i am at the top of my game so shut up and learn something
murf5824 3 years ago
I'd agree since he was in a teaching setting he probably didn't word it correctly he was indeed saying if you work hard you can overcome not having natural talent. On the other hand, he is he not a great player? It ain't bragging if you can do it and I'd say he's in a small group of REALLY good players so he's paid dues enough to say I'm a great player in my book.
DynaflowDonnie 3 years ago
well ... he is a great guitar player lol

"It's true. I'm a really great guitar player." That just doesn't sound right.
professorgreibowitz 3 years ago
Great artist, very generous with other musicians. I met him once in Leo's Audio in Oakland about 15 years or more past. He took the time to listen to a song I had written and gave me some good feedback. One of the greats, in all respects, and like he said, a very hard worker.

Indeed mate, I can't believe the ego here! o_O
katanamanatee 3 years ago
Kwitcherbitchin. Simply by placing a single artist as "the greatest of all time", you have showed your complete musical immaturity and inability to see music as art, but instead as competition. Karma will get you in the end.

Bof !!! o;((

I think he just worded what he was trying to say the wrong way. Really, it sounded like he was just trying to say that as long as you work hard, you could become a great guitar player.
brainiaxe 3 years ago
yeah that comment at the end kinda killed it for me, why not whop out your cock and show everyone how big it is whilst your at it. lovely playing though.
axolotl84 3 years ago
LOL! Maybe that is why he wears the really baggy trousers. He DOES whip it out but just not in this particular vid. Yeah, you'd think he'd know how that great part came out. Sounded COCKy to me.
professorgreibowitz 3 years ago
"i'm a really great guitar player. i'm arguably one of the better players in the world"
sheesh.
of course he's great, but no one dare say such a thing like that unless they have some sort of insecurity to deal with....
Perhapsy 3 years ago
well, i see it the other way around. someone who cannot deal with somebody stating the obvious (being a great guitar player) is probably the one who has insecurities.

MY FAVORITE GUITARIST
EddyGuitar 4 years ago 4
I like how he's not like the guys who say they aren't good at guitar when they are, just makes them off as being dicks.
This guy knows hes good, we all know hes good... good on him for not being scared to admit it.
YahngProductions 4 years ago
Actually, guitarists that go around telling people they're pretty good and then talk about other guitarists being 'average' or 'poor' is really fucking pretentious. The best guitarists are the ones not talking about how good they are- they're the ones that play.
Shamino1 4 years ago 4
Fair enough, I respect that.
Peace.

can sum1 interpret wat he says in da end,coz he doesnt trying to put sum point, whch people around here misinterpreted
roublejoe 4 years ago
I dont think he is being pretentious.. its obvious he is a fantastic guitarist. hes basically trying to tell the kids there, that he has tried hard to become one of the best guitarists in the world (which he is) and if they try hard enough anything is possible is all. i think this guy is misunderstood.. He is pasionate about guitar and he has my admiration and respect as a fellow guitarist. although i will never be anywhere near close to his lvl :)
