This is my favorite song ever.. makes me feel so peacefull! i always study with this song, i sleep with this song and i shower, bike, walk the dogs, travel, and house-keep with this song! Enya's music brings me to a place with no stress, no pressure. A place where the mystique is in charge.. love that feeling..!
A couple of years ago when I was in Year 9, our teacher made us put our heads down, close our eyes, listen to this song and use our imagination to see what happened. I imagined myself standing high in the mountains of Alaska. :)
Irish music, like Asian music, European is not guttural music. It's been more open to new places, new people, and new cultures and that is more important. Who cares what language it is? It's should be about music, be it style, language or culture.
i love all people yet luv's my clan's are from kilkenny and galway. Never has any of my clans spoke Irish, no such thing. Gaelic is the language of Eire. Peace and your right this song is powerful brings you back to the fairies and little people of the great green land. peace
So beautiful and cheerful. When my son, Ciaran, was a baby, I used to put this on and let him bop around in the jolly-jumper, lol. He never squawked when it was on. Her music is so--otherworldly and peaceful. It takes you away from the stresses and demands of the right-here-right-now and just makes you feel good things. What a gift.
@jamielivefree Actually you're sorely wrong. The language she is singing in is Irish Gaelic!!! A language still spoken.
Ebudae is an older name for the Hebrides Islands in Scotland. This song is based of "waulking" songs. Waulking songs are songs that were sung while beating cloth to make it soft.
Hauntingly spiritual sound. This song is also used in an episode of "Northern Exposure". Search Youtube for the episode titled "MORE LIGHT".. It's an awesome clip. Check it out....
Loving light shines upon the woman as she works no matter where she works or what she's working on... but it is the labor of love that is truly eternal...
Thank You Nicki .... I appreciate this every single time I listen to it... what you did at one moment, on one day, has lifted me over and over and again...
I agree, partially, with the beauty of language. Although, I disagree that Irish is "the most beautiful". As an American, I must admit, American english is atrocious. It doesn't help that there's so much slang in it. I'm learning my Ancestors' algonquin language/Shawnee.
Love the sunset on the northern woods and lake at 1:54. Those sun-shots remind me of being up at Old Fort Niagara, in N.Y. Love it up there!
This song makes me want to drop everything and dance. It gives such a good feeling of happiness and remembrance. And, the video amplifies that joyful feeling. Thanks!
@eithneceltica Exactly... in Gaeilge, it's called the Gaoth Dobhair dialect... one of the most fluid, most beautiful dialects of Gaeilge. Such a beautiful language... and a beautiful land.
@jamielivefree It's not Loxian. They didn't start developing that language until after the Lord of the Rings films... which were made years after this song was recorded.
@RunrigFan I don't mean in terms of music, I mean in terms of the overall language. Enya is fantasic, and her music doesn't have many guttural sounds that I can think of. Irish overall does(as do most European and Asian languages other than English).
@kemosabe73 Actually it's spelled "Gaelic". There are 3 dialects of it spoken in Ireland. Eithne speaks & sings in the Donegal (North Ireland) dialect. What's unique is it's closest dialect is Highland (Scots) Gaelic. Not surprizing as the Scots left from North Ireland to settle in Ebudae (the Inner Hebrides & western coast of Scotland). Ergo, the song sings of the women's spirit needed to work long, hard hours in a newly settled territory. That's make take on it anyway.
Anyway I consider this song and "The River Sings" both waulking songs. For those who don't know about waulking songs look it up on youtube and listen to a few. It's part of the gaelic heritage.
