You fail to see the whole point of the story. This whole relationship is based less on lust at the beginning than true love. As the relationship progresses Humbert sees he is unable to be both a father and a lover to this child, who really is nothing more than a child. The writer of this book was one of the first to ever acknowledge a child's sexuality. In 1949 this material ws scandalous.
