In countries like Sweden, the current neoVictorian nudity taboo would be viewed as just plain silly, as it is. I expect America to join our European cousins within a generation on this issue.
The German's more than any other country seems to retain its freedom and uninhibitedness about nudity. In Munich & Berlin there are public parks with large open nude sections. To some extent, I think the more you cover up, the more you increase the mystery & curiosity about what can't be seen.
Though of course, any society very much sees a time & place aspect of it. Even in open societies, there is a proper & improper place for nudity.
I think a degree of guilt a& shame has been heaped on both the USA and the world. In Japan, until Westerners arrived, nudity was nothing. It would not be uncommon for whole families along with their neighbors to go to public baths together - boys, girls, men, women. Very much so, they were able to separate nudity and sex. I think Europe, while not as repressed as the USA, is growing more modest and shame ridden. Though I do remember male only non-sexual bath houses in Germany.
It was right to teach kids that nudity was separate from sex. Now anyone who is nude in public is judged as being sexual. The irony is that now casual sex is the norm... it is called "hooking up". Our kids don't ever show themselves non-sexually but they do show themselves sexually when they "hook up". If nudism was allowed, our young people would seek to "hook up" less because nudity and sexuality wouldn't be so distorted.
I am currentlly in high school. and i think that at least at my level this wold help kids break there insecurities, heck when i showered nude in the locker room everyone gasped. aslo as that you newspaper said it rilly is a thrill to swim nude.
"when i showered nude in the locker room everyone gasped."
"Gasped"? ;) Are you bragging (just kidding) or are you saying that many students do NOT shower nude? If they shower in their underwear, that's an interesting bit of information.
I find in odd that on some fronts modern kids are very immodest, but on other fronts, they seem hyper modest? Its an odd world.
It's a shame that kids that would want to can no longer experience this. However in modern times it's just not safe for kids to do so. To many predators in or out of schools.
It's sad that today we think of nudity with sex. Things sure was different back then. I would have liked to enjoy them Huckleberry Finn years. I wouldn't mind swimming nude in the Y.M.C.A., as long as there were no females around, but like you said, it most likely won't come back. It tells you how sic our nation is today.
