  • Remember Kids, Its okay to be different as long as it benefits society :)

  • Wow, this brought back memories!

  • Paw brought me here. xD

  • I understood everything the little boy said.

  • i typed in:"boing boing"

  • Thumbs up if Antenna TV brought you here.

  • Abed from Community brought me here.

  • He was hired by Hollywood,

    So off he did go!

But he first changed his name...

    (to Michael Winslow.)

  • Gerald McBoing-Boing condition+ today's 20-year olds = pro wrestling fan

  • Marvin Miller also narrated "Sleeping Beauty"!

  • wath program are you using?

  • Remember, kids, Gerald doesn't speak words; he goes "boing! boing!" instead.

  • Uh, "Boing-Boing?" Lmao!

  • i remember this i use to love it

  • Gerald McBoing Boing was my favorite cartoon growing up

  • i looooooooove old cartoonss!!

  • He's like the Black guy from Police Academy :D

  • @Tacom4ster Haha you mean Michael Winslow?

  • thumbs up if you watched this because the Nostalgia Critic talks about Inspector Gadget's annoying sound effects that won't shut the fuck up

  • when i was a little kid in the mid 60's, i had a gerald mcboing-boing halloween costume. i never knew what i was wearing till i asked my dad and he told me, though i had never seen or heard of him. i didn't know gerald was a boys name, otherwise i may not have worn the costume (being a girl). lol don't know where the costume came from-perhaps one of my younger uncles'- and don't know where it went after i grew out of it.

this is my very first time seeing gerald in action and think it's cute

  • 5:51 - 6:20 lmao

  • I mean Gerald and throat :P

  • Couldn't they just do surgery on heralds throught just to see what the problem is that's what I would do :D

  • Could he be related to that guy from Police Academy too?

  • He was swearing and his words were censord.

  • Thumbs up when Nostalgia Critic brought u here :D

  • LEARN TO SPEAK,STUPID GERALD MCSTUPID BOING

  • this was exactly the same script with the great gildersleeve voice narrating the story on a bozo the clown record LP

  • hahahahahaahahaha funny:-(

  • whoa nellie, this is good

  • so sweet! ^_^

  • My Uncle called me Gerald McBoing-Boing when I was a little child. I am now 47 and I never knew this was a real character.. haha I love it..

  • Lol Wow, he works for the NBC radio station.

  • Cool!...son loves it.

  • he's so cute

  • Totally charming.

  • 5:06 NBC Logo

  • Sencillamente magistral............

  • best part: 3:02-3:21

  • Funny thing, I was first introduced to this video from the Hellboy dvd where it's a special feature. And it's still one of my favorite shorts of all time.

  • video not working!

  • the style is actualy influenced by british animations done by peter sachs

  • UPA was ahead of it's time.

  • An amazing experience! As an animation fan this is one of the best conceived and executed cartoons I've ever seen. Quite a departure from anything of the period; totally expressionistic. Pay particular attention to the MUSIC. It's in the style of neo-classic Stravinsky...but who could ever imagine it in a cartoon?

    Simply wonderful!

  • That doctor was soooo helpful.

  • ONE OF MY FAVORITES!

  • I used to listen to this on the radio on sunday mornings..... felt so sorry for him as a child .....heehee

  • This proves that you don't need expensive animation in order to make an amazing film, great writing satisfies is just as fine.

  • Bark like a dog, and bay like the hounds.

Man, this guy covers the whole gamut of sound requirements, huh?

  • I'd like to thank Hellboy for giving me the opportunity to witness such genius in this day and age.

  • ROFL! Even limited animation from the Golden Age can look great in the right setting.

  • Oooooooooooh :-) I remember Gerald McBoing Boing fondly from my childhood. How nice that it hasn't been lost. Thanks so much.

  • i just shat brix from seeing this it good

  • The book is great too.

  • Excuse me, do you happen to have "Magoo's Arabian Nights"?

  • i adore how simple everything is in this .

    loveee

  • i love this video 100%

  • This pretty much represents my relationship with my parents. They couldn't deal with me, my creativity, my sound effects until I ended up on one of the most popular animated shows of all time.

  • LOL - it's the sound I imagine a kangaroo to make.

It's a bit more upbeat than Charlie Brown - when a grown up spoke it was always "waah, waah-waah, waah!"

  • hey rebekah are u there? its me Ivan haha

  • I love gerarld!!

It is fantastic!! I am charmed with it!!

  • Gerald McBoing-Boing grew up and became a hippy in the 60s.

  • Really, Stickydisgust? I heard he died in 'Nam.

  • What a great cartoon! And it's proof running away from home pays off in the end.

  • Damn that kid's cute

  • thank you!!!

  • i checked out a book of old comic archives, and this was in it! the movie left out a few panels though, and he roared like a lion when his dad was shaving

  • this is pure genius

  • Classic UPA at it's best. I think some people are taking the story a bit too literally though, it's supposed to be a metaphor: UPA were trying different methods of creating animations, along with convincing people to take the medium seriously as a 2D art form. Gerald's struggle is thiers:Gerald's natural reaction to express in a way nobody else understands is symbolic for right-wing conventionalists in mainstream animation rejecting new ways. But eventually he is accepted and loved. like UPA.

  • Aw, this is my childhood right here :-)

  • This is awesome. The new one sucks donkey balls.

  • this is cute. Had it been made in a more commercial style it wouldnt be as good. Since having limited animation explained to me I am more aware of the non moving parts on screen.

  • Lol

  • Why all classic cartoons look so great even today, 60 or 70 years after?

Because they were made for the Big Screen- they had to be funny and witty and full of rythm (without much talking!), so that the audience would get excited and not bored.

TV screwed everything: TV cartoons are generaly flat, repeating, full of talking. The reason is the medium itself: you're more relaxed in front of telly, less focused, doing other things at the same time, not paying much attention anyway...

  • you can blame the same company that made this cartoon for that though can't you, UPA with their limited animation methods that hanna barbera latched on to. Seriously, it's not all bad on TV, there has been some awesome cartoons in recent years, Samurai Jack, Flapjack, Spongebob. Animated films too, look at Belle Ville rendezvous. I agree though, that in a lot of ways they became lazy, but thats the product of the medium, it has to be produced quickly and efficiently.

    x

  • I don't think old cartoons were so expensive -it' rather a matter of story, rythm and direction. Of course there are beautiful cartoons today (especially in computer animation, which attracts- as a new medium- more talented and experimentary creators), but they' re like a colorful drop in a sea of gray mass-production.

  • This was made for tv and they used limited animation techniques to save money. Bugs Bunny and stuff like that was the stuff produced for the theater.

  • Don't make such a big deal of this. It's just a cartoon.

  • That was sweet, thanks!

  • I also can't get over how Gerald's parents couldn't stand him when at the beginning of the story, and they loved him at the end when he was rich and famous.

  • I'm imagining the time period that this cartoon was released in. Disney's majestically expensive cartoons were all the rage, and yet through simple creativity, this tale was better than half of them.

Simply put, this animation is just a lot of fun to look at. It's simple, non-realistic, and highlights the simplicity of the story. Proof that you don't need a lot of money to make a good piece of animation.

Pure creativity. So basic and yet so well executed. RIP Dr. Seuss, we miss you a lot.

  • With you on that one. The new one is complete garbage. I hope this new animated flash junk will blow over in time.

  • Well said!

  • @JourneyTraveler i really liked this comment of yours.my dad is 74,his daddy used to watch it,so i e-mailed it to him today.memories,ya know.ya..

  • @JourneyTraveler But the problem with today's cartoons is that simple animation like this is being abused very heavily by Flash. I love this cartoon compared to unfunny PC cartoons of today

P.S. This cartoon was released in 1950

  • Gail Kubik's score is great. This would be worth watching for the music alone.

  • i love this show

    !

  • you're an idiot. why are you watching this if you hate it so much?

Gerald McBoing is not only an entertaining and funny story, but it is a great example of superb animation. Don't be a hater.

  • And amen to that ....why can pepole just ait back relax & enjoy a good old fashion cartoon instead up being a jerk ! I thought it was just lovely :-D

  • to masterlinkx1 u dont know shit about old generation of people. hell even today some parents are still like that. But in the past it was common place.

  • so they have to put it on a fucking cartoon

  • The show is different than this cartoon. The show is immature and kinda annoying, but this is a classic cartoon.

  • Classic Dr. Seuss. xD

  • Thats was great! I saw the e

recent version on TV the other day but I love the old one! Great stuff.

  • I love Dr Seuss

  • I wonder what he would sound like if he talked?

  • Watch mr gazoos christmas carol he plays tiny tim in that according to wikipedia

  • loved this as a kid; didn't realize it was from Dr Seuss.

  • so this is the original. There was one on the unsuccessful "Tickle U" block on Cartoon Network a few years back, and that was bad. The original is a lot better

  • amen to that

  • This shows why people are so rude to kids on the autistic spectrum. Just because they make noises, or obsess about things doesnt mean they are hopeless. I made noises, and obsessed about things alot when I was younger, and teachers called me things like "ignorant", "disruptive", and hopeless. These teachers will mean nothing to me when I graduate.

  • Children with Aspergers and Autism sometimes make noises to get out of a stressful situation. People that don't understand autism might think that they are really trying to be disruptive.

  • "People who don't understand autism." Yes.

While I make no apologies for your teachers who should have learned about the condition, I can also say that in today's schools there are many teachers not trained to work with special needs children who are expected to do just that. The sorry state of special education is at least partly to blame, not just teachers who have not been given adequate training to teach those children, who are dropped in classrooms with no support whatsoever.

  • Not long ago, there was a societal shift, in regards to special needs, which did away with segregated classrooms for special needs students. But instead of offering them assistance within a "regular" classroom, we went from one extreme to the other: total segregation to total integration. But many of them still need EXTRA support within the classroom, period. These kids are getting the short end of the stick and it's intolerable.

  • I'm not gonna use acronyms:

WHAT THE FUCK is a discussion on autism doing here? It's a goddamn CARTOON. Go back to silentmiaow's channel if you want to talk about that.

  • Hey, yeah, I know it's such a shock to see the YouTube comment section getting of topic...

I didn't realize people had to clear it with you before they replied to someone's comment, which was clearly inspired by the video anyway.

  • most teachers are asses

  • Not most, but a lot.

  • Comment removed

  • is there more of these gerald films i seen the nrwer version but this is better. ........................... they all play a part in this world of PRETEND but the hero is always our soundmaking friend

  • This would be good for non-verbal kids to watch too.

  • And they say parents these days flip out the moment anything happens to their kids. Those two were so quick call in medical help and run around screaming in panic, they could easily have been modern parents.

These days Gerald would have been doped up on ritalin until he stops being unique and starts acting like everybody else.

  • agreed!

  • I can remember this from when I was VERY little. There were still a lot of very strange old cartoons being played on TV in the early 70's.

  • His parents ARE douche bags.

  • If you want to find the recording of the version played on the radio, search on "Gerald McBoingBoing" and "Gildersleeve". There's a site that has it available for download.

  • I saw this on Italian TV about 1968-69, in an Italian rhythmic version! I was only four or five but still remember it all, only in black and white!

    Thanks a lot

  • Those parents are dicks.

i know its a cartoon but come on.

    WHERES THE SOCIAL SECURITY AGENTS?!

    CHILD SERVICES?!??! ANYONE!??

The parents ignore him when hes annoying. when he's rich, he's loved so much by his parents.

    Great ex. lol

  • i got this on my hellboy dvd

  • Perhaps the radio version I used to love was shortened to eliminate the non-speaking sections but I do remember it finished with an insane laugh. I think it was around 1948/49. Perhaps you know more about this Kappappa.

  • Not an insane laugh, but the trademark laugh of actor Harold Peary, radio's Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve.

  • Cheers and thanks for that.

  • This original version of this used to be on Radio in New Zealand every Sunday on a request session 60 yrs ago but I forget who was the reader. Great to hear this again. Boing boooooing!

  • Hitler look-a-like in the crowd 6.22

  • @altaccount1 dayam...that sure does look like hitler

  • u no what's messed up.

gerald's father ignores him when he's a joke and when gerald becomes rich he forgets to provoke.get it has a ryme so read more to pass your time.

  • man this cartoon is so relaxing, i always fell asleep in the afternoon while watching this...i really like it....ahah

  • Huh. I had no idea this cartoon existed before now, and I actually enjoyed it! All I'd heard about before was the cartoon they're showing on Boomerang now - and that one just grates on my nerves. Thanks for posting! :D

  • i saw part of it in the pixar story

  • Oh, this is just plain LOVELY!!! =DDDD wonderful idea and the art is very good!

  • This and Harold's Purple Crayon were my faves when I was a kid.

  • I was a very tiny tot when this show first came to TV. It made a huge impression on me, but I was so young - hadn't even started grammar school yet - that when I later wanted to discuss the show, I had no idea what it was called, etc., and everybody thought I was nuts. Finally, I discovered an article about it and hunted up some videos on the 'net. Immediately, I realized why this show made such a huge impression on me. It still kicks ass!

    Paco...

  • And that young boy grew up to become...Michael Winslow.

  • This cartoon's awesome. It's funny, it has style, and it's nice.

The new animated series suck so much!

  • they have a tv show on this i think

  • The whole "radio" thing is outdated, but this is still a nice short. I love the flat, retro art style. How come nobody's done it since the 60s? It's nice and cozy.

  • It wasn't done anymore because it became passe. It was phased out in the early '70s when Hanna Barbera had a new design department which created the scooby doo look and it lasted until the '80s That style was created by U.P.A. in the 1940's as a way to make budget cuts. It did however start a trend and made a modern style for the '50s and '60s inspiring many cartoon studios. Cartoons today in some ways are similar in that they are flat and the backround is the same tone, but they aren't as good.

  • i think they made a new version of this

  • Gerald McBoing Boing the noisemaker boy

  • Boing Boing!

  • Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Flim - 1950

  • that was funny.....

  • R.I.P. Bill Melendez

  • Woah. What? Bill Melendez died? That sucks!

  • So why did you watch it? This cartoon is not annoying at all. You want an annoying cartoon? Try CN or Nickelodeon.

  • It's Hellboy's favourite cartoon. Something to do with acceptance probably.

  • what a great alternate ending to the edward scissor-hands

  • I'm a middle-aged man who makes funny noises

  • this is an adorable cartoon!

  • anyone know the new.. version??

  • Gerald McBoing-Boing played Tiny Tim Crachit opposite Mr. Magoo as Ebenezer Scrooge in UPA's "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" with Jack Cassidy as the voice of Bob Crachit.

  • Yeah,but he SPOKE in that role!XO

  • I can relate to Gerald McCoy, because I used to make funny noises when I was little.

  • i ♥ Gerald McBoing Boing

  • they got this in newer versions

  • Thats the one my bros. watch.. idk why i like it better.. but i love this story..!

  • yer its awsome lol

  • lol yes! i agree!

  • this is pretty well done animation thoe it was made in 1951 :) better than the new gmbb shown on ABCKIDS(or CN)

  • I watched these as a kid, but appreciate them better as an adult, with better experience of Dr. Suess rhyming. But I HAD recognized Gerald as the kid "playing" Tiny Tim in Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol!

  • whats?

  • this is definitely one of the best animated films of the 20th century.......what happened to simplicity and imagination........now its lush productions with no plot.......

  • I think I speak for the English-speaking population of the world when I say, "Huh?"

  • Love the style on this one. Looks pretty modern still today.

  • Seeing this Gerald McBoing Boing makes me glad I came along in the 1950s.

Very inventive and still holds its charm.

  • Not everybody with a beard is a Hitler

  • Especially since Hitler didn't have a beard...

  • Name one.

  • lmao what

  • i love this cartoon so much♥

  • LOL I M THINKING SAME :DD

  • a masterpiece of graphic style. superb.

  • my 7 month old loves this freakin show
