But, guy with facial hair, you aren't addressing a couple things: (1) Jay was removed from "The Tonight Show" by NBC because they feared losing Conan to another network, and (2) Conan's "Tonight Show" ratings were already dropping months before Jay's 10PM show had even premiered. I actually hoped Conan would change his format, but he still does his Conando skit, which frankly makes my hair stand. To suggest that people are channel "drifters" who do not know what they want to watch every night is fallacious.

How is it that after The Jay Leno Show premiered a majority of the NBC affiliates suffered an average 25% ratings drop in their late local news broadcast? Was it coincidence that viewers suddenly did not want watch their favorite local NBC news anchors? Yes, Conan lost some of TTS audience, but having Leno as a lead in didn't help.

I must also say that Jay's two popular bits, Headlines and Jaywalking were stolen from Dave...

Wrong. Conan as already getting beat by Letterman in the months before Leno started the 10 PM show. Even Letterman reruns were beating new O'Brien shows that Summer. All Leno asked from NBC is to be released from his contract after the 10 PM show was cancelled. It was NBC's idea to put Leno on from 11:30-12. Jay thought it would be better to accept that than to take NBC to court to try to get his release.

How is it that after The Jay Leno Show premiered a majority of the NBC affiliates suffered an average 25% ratings drop in their late local news broadcast? Was it coincidence that viewers suddenly did not want watch their favorite local NBC news anchors? Yes, Conan lost some of TTS audience, but having Leno as a lead in didn't help.

@mjbab73 Your assessment this time sounds more fair. Your initial one simply stated that people changed then channel when Leno's prime time show came on, which is simply not entirely the case. With the absence of statistics to truly prove why Leno's 10 o'clock show rating dropped, all is moot. But I can tell you first-hand that I watched Conan's Tonight Show for a couple of weeks, and I got disgusted and removed his show's entry from my DVR.

@ualsdu7777 The prob was Zucker. He made awful decisions while at the helm of NBC. During his time as President, he managed to allow his No.1 network slip to No.4. He should have let Conan go in '04 rather than force Jay out. However, Jay's to blame as well. He should of stood his ground when told he'd be losing his show in 5 years if he didn't want to retire...Or suck it up and go to another network like Dave did. You may not like Conan, but did he get a fair chance to develop his show?

@mjbab73 Yes, Conan had time to develop his show. I have Jay Leno, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel on my DVR. I then look at their guests to see if I feel like watching them, else I delete them from my DVR. Conan's format has been the same for years. I especially hate his Conando skit. I do like his monologue, and he is a very good interviewer. But over all, Conan's show just isn't watching from beginning to end, for me anyway. Don't think that I don't know Conan's format.

@ualsdu7777 I didn't suggest anything, except maybe seven months isn't much time to develop a "format". Conan changed timeslots as well coasts. Either way, you just don't like him. That's fine, but I must say that in comparison to Leno, he's a genius. I'm a Letterman fan if ya haven't figured that out already. I'm sure you're strongly opinionated about him. Late night is a has-been format (DVR and all). In time, there will be only four names remembered; Allen, Parr, Carson and Letterman.

This discussion started with Leno being responsible for Conan's low ratings. The fact is, Conan killed the class of the Tonight Show with his inane skits. The talk show hosts I still respect though is Leno, Letterman, and yes, Conan. If he would just take out the poor taste skits, I think he would've fared out better.

She also inadvertently caused great friction between Jay and Dave, who were very good friends before the '92 incident. Jay eventually halted having comedians perform stand-up on his format...A 30 yr tradition under Johnny's reign that escalated live comedy to new heights. I must also say that Jay's two popular bits, Headlines and Jaywalking were stolen from Dave...

This combined with Jay's lack of quick-wit in the interviewing, failure to give credit where credit's do, and throwing Conan under the bus (YES he did), make for a inferior Tonight Show compared to Carson and co. Conan brought back the stand-ups. He had to appease NBC, TTS audience, and fans of his 'Late Night' show...Not an easy task. He needed more time. Either way, everything's OK now I guess. Plus Dave got to vent...GOLD :)

They never gave Conan a chance. Remember Letterman had better ratings than Leno until Leno starting shaking the crowds hands. But when they did the change, they only gave it a few months, what did they want? I like Leno, but I think he should have had a car show on Speed Channel rather than be a comedian. Conan will probably have better ratings than all the comedians on late shows, since we follow him everywhere. Even Europeans watch Conan!!

In this day, most people watch their favorite shows online because of school or work or they're just busy. Factoring that in (which is extremely viable and makes sense)... Conan is beating Leno.

@ALLRacingTV Conan didn't have the great ratings, but he wasn't given a chance to change that. Jay's show was even worse with the earlier timeslot where he was competing with better, scripted dramas. To try and salvage Jay's show, NBC told Conan they wanted to move his show back half an hour or something like that. Conan said no, NBC fired him, canceled Jay's old show and threw him back on the Tonight Show. People hate Jay for not saying "Let Conan keep his show, It was mine that failed."

Wrong. Conan as already getting beat by Letterman in the months before Leno started the 10 PM show. Even Letterman reruns were beating new O'Brien shows that Summer. All Leno asked from NBC is to be released from his contract after the 10 PM show was cancelled. It was NBC's idea to put Leno on from 11:30-12. Jay thought it would be better to accept that than to take NBC to court to try to get his release.

No reason to be upset at Jay. You can blame NBC, but not Leno for accepting an invite back to the Tonight Show. Leno was forced out; he didn't voluntarily leave the show. NBC came to him with the 10:00 plan. NBC asked him back. In fact, Leno voluntarily was willing to compromise to a half hour. It is YOU who doesn't understand the situaton.
