hey do you know how much RAM can i put on my Ibook G3 800Mhz 40GB??? i want to put on a 2GB RAM.... sorry for my english im venezuelan but help me please.
I purchased one off ebay for 40.00$ flat. No keyboard or Wifi, Charger, and OS, but these are all things I could get from my older iBook G3 Clamshell, as I have everything, even the Mac OS X 10.2 Installation Disks.
the trick to getting youtube to work well on ppc macs is to use flash player 8 if your mac doesn't support core image 9 (go to about this mac and then click more info and go to displays and see) but if it does use flash player 9 and both are downloadable from old mac apps, use camino and set your power settings on the highest setting if on a portable (go to system prefs and go to energy saver and battery or power adapter and choose higher)
@aflockofmusic2 You can se that this video is over 2 years old... youtube has made a lot of changes over the past couple years, and some of them have required the computer to do more of the work. So no iBook G3 works on youtube the way this one did.
@aflockofmusic2 I have an ibook g4 and can play almost any youtube video, the trick is to update to Flash player 10.1, which is much much much better than 10. set to 360p or lower. Might be a little jerky to start, but usually plays fine. Also, you can search and download higher quality (mp4) videos with mactubes, and play them in VLC or Quicktime (as long as you have Perian installed). Works like a charm. Helps to have as much ram as you can, I have 1.2 GB RAM on a 1.2 GHZ ibook.
@imixmuan my ibook G4 has 800 MHz G4, i can only play videos, if i keep a very old version of flash player 9 and safari 3. But the quality is terrible.
@aflockofmusic2 search for an download a free standing application for macs called youview, it will play 480p youtube videos in a standalone window. It uses ffmpeg, not flash, and is way kinder on older machines. You will not be disappointed. For playing in a browser, try flashvideoreplacer, uses quicktime instead of flash, I found it a little buggy to be honest.
@thedarkone2134 since I wrote my last comment I've "rediscovered" Mactubes. The newest version 3.0.4 allows you to swap out quicktime or use a "video player" which I think is just HTML5. Quicktime is sublime on my old ibook. Even at fmt=34 (above 480p but below 720p) video is smooth, like butter. I do have one solution for 720p called coreplayer. Coreplayer has by far the best software decoder out there, a file in quicktime that chews up 90% of CPU cycles will only use 38% in coreplayer.
the reason its so fast its because he has Mac OS X 10.3.9 which requires 128mb of ram, he has 256mb which is doubles the performance, this then then makes his internet browsing somewhat speedy
i had an ibook G3 700 MHz with 640 MBs of RAM and the laptop was fast and everything, but the web browsing was horrible. it was soooo slow. i couldnt go on facebook with it. it would not allow me to download much either. i wanted one for so long and it disappointed me, my PC with 384 MBs of Ram and an AMD sempron runs really slow but the web browsing is quite fast on it. it literally takes 5 minutes for it to open firefox
Wow. I wanted to get an ibook (for historic value) but was turned off because of it's low specs, but my acer aspire one with 1600 mhz processor and 1gb of ram isn't even that fast...
iTunes and internet shouldn't require a RAM upgrade... but if you want to watch you tube videos without having to wait for them to load... I would. The HD shouldn't need upgraded at all.
512mb 144 RAM is usually around $40 if you look for it on ebay.
You can run garageband on a G3, but only certain versions... the newest one I don't believe would run on a G3... honestly I would highly recommend going with a G4 iBook at the very least if you want to run garageband.
The Max OS a G3 can use is 10.4... 10.5 requires a G5 processor. To upgrade the operating system, you have to buy install disks... a cheap place you can find them is ebay.
Not sure when the computer in the video was made... do you want to know how to install an airport card, or how to connect to a wireless access point on your computer? If the latter, what operating system is your iBook running?
In OS 10, you click on a icon at the top right of your screen (right next to the volume indicator). The icon looks like a diamond shape. From there, you select your wireless network.
To install an airport card... just check out my video on it! Very easy... right under the keyboard.
There was a version of internet explorer for Mac OS 10 in the past, but MS stopped making it. I would not suggest using explorer on any computer. Use firefox if possible.
I got the pounds! It is about $150 in USD... a great deal on a decent iBook! Are there a lot of used apple's over there? I have always wondered how many used Apple shops/repair shops are around in the UK.
well there is 1 apple store in london and thats it though u can get macs from various shops around the country there are quite a lot of used macs on ebay but not alot of other of places
Keep in mind I am running off of a pretty high speed connection... so that will make a huge difference in the download speed... the video was mainly just to show the rendering speed of the computer.
I am definitely on high speed internet. This is mainly to show the ability of the computer to render the pages as the data comes in, and display video and such. The internet will not run that fast on a slow connection.
Thanks for the video! this is great now i'm sure i'm going for the ibook g3 on ebay, may i know which version of Mac OSX were in this video 10.3 or 10.4?
Yeah I have the same question, I have a Ibook G3 800 Mhz, 640 RAM and Mac os X 10,4, the videos of youtube seems slow :(, Runned better when I have MacOsX 10.3.
Im planning on getting a 500mhz or 600mhz model, have you tried them on youtube? I'm not really sure if there fast enough or I should buy a 700-800mhz model.
I don't have any videos of the 500 or 600 models... they do work for browsing and web processing... but not for much more. They are slow at photo and video work.
I've got 800MhZ G4 and I have got Firefox, Mail, iTunes, iCal, Safari, Photoshop CS3, System Preferences, Preview, TextEdit, iPhoto and 3 QuickTime windows open and I can watch this without lag :D OS X IS BULLETPROOF!!!! (10.3.9)
I have a top of the line ibook g3 800 mhz, 256mb sdram, 2002 model, os x 10.3.9 (working on os x 10.4.11, i need a cd install disk, NOT dvd, and of course, i has me a dvd....)
Are you typing on the built in keys, or is that an external keyboard? because i'm buying an iBook G3 and i wanted to know what the keyboard was like. Thanks
I am typing on an external keyboard. I didn't use the keyboard on the computer because I didn't want the screen to be shaking while I was typing. The keyboard on the iBooks is a lot quieter than the external keyboard.
Thats how I remember dial up loading pages.....yet my DSL does it the same way.
Odd very Odd indeed. =/

would the ibook simply pick up the signal?
or would you have to patch it in?
mine uses osx 10...i think,
