when i heard this song dear god did it strike a chord, how many times have i heard "are you still bi?" when i was with a woman, it made me feel good to know i wasn't the only person out there who has had this experience, this song solidified my love of her music
I'm having trouble finding a video that ani did some years ago. It was kinda creepy with her standing in front of the mic and I think she had mud on her face for some odd reason. The music video was very bizarre but cool! Does anyone know what I'm talkin about?
Why are people comparing Ani DiFranco (major songwriting talent) to Lady Gaga (corporate whore) ? If in any doubts people, remember AD = beautiful, talented, original, driven whereas LGG = Talentless, fucking-someone-at-the-label, scarecrow bitch. 'Nuff Said. Ani Difranco FOREVER!
@endofsomething the sad part is, lady gaga is incredibly talented. she just doesn't use any of it. example: /watch?v=0nagXDRvlh4
now, i don't think any of her songs that are on the radio are anything but a hideous attempt at making music, so don't get me wrong. other than that, i agree completely. i think the only reason they're comparing them is because of their sexual orientation. if that were the case, how accurate could that really be?
@BITCHSHITCUNTFUCK Perhaps, but that's wrong. We don't compare straight musicians on the grounds of being straight, why should we compare bisexuals? Its not like its a 'thing'. Personally, I think LGG is dreadful, its annoying how people are starting to dig her, not because they like her, but just because she's being hugely overplayed. Sad indictment of modern music eh? Cheers.
@endofsomething exactly my point. that's the only similarity that i can see between them, so that's why i brought it up. i was going to elaborate and tell you how silly i thought it was to compare someone with something so irrelevant to character or talent, but the character limit wouldn't let me.
@BITCHSHITCUNTFUCK Agreed. I would say to anyone comparing sexuality in music as if it matters to compare Bob Mould (Husker Du) with Freddie Mercury (Queen) two gay men that sing completely differently or Ozzy Ozbourne (Black Sabbath) with Frank Sinatra, straight guys who sing totally differently. The same is true for bi, trans or anything else. Your sexuality comes into play when you sing, sure, but not in any way that allows comparison with other artists based upon it. Cheers (Lady Gaga sucks)

@lilmonstar98 You are OBVIOUSLY not very musically savvy, this has been out for years....an aside, I am a fan of Lady Gagas as well as ANI's..there really is no comparison so why does everyone bother???
@lilmonstar98 Lady gaga was six years old when Ani Difranco released this song. This is obviously not gaga's stupid mainstream shit. this is real music. check your facts next time, fucktard.
@lilmonstar98 Apparantly Lady Gaga can't....I'm guessing you're only around 13 though (98 suggests you were born in 1998) so I'll let it slide. Honestly people, they made a mistake. No need to freak out at them. Sheesh!
to me, spots is something a diseased or otherwise ostracized person (or a wild animal) has, and stripes is something a wild animal has; basically, she doesn't fit into the cookie cutter store maniquin world. that's how i understand it, anyway.
Whenever possible....buy direct from the artist (ie. through their websites), it allows them to receive the full profit, rather than sharing it with the vendor stocking their album.
Yeh, I did, because he said he wanted to download it, not buy it. And, given the current level immorality among most folks these days when it comes to music, I'm probably not in too much danger of being wrong, and he's not come back to claim otherwise. But of course, as always, there will be an attempt to keep the conversation away from the real problem. OMG it's the evil labels. OMG it's someone accusing me falsely. OMG it's those rich stars. No, it's about blantant theft by consumers.
i luv difranco. her music has more than meaning it speaks out to everyone and it shows her independence and how she chooses to express herself which i luv :)
yeah, this song definitely gets me pumped, and I like this sort of "clip show" kinda video where you can see her from a bunch of different gigs, it's rad.
Shes an amazing artist. I saw her live last night for the first time. Her energy fills up the whole room. Shes high on her music!! It was beautiful nd inspiring!!
she is very cool and very friendly once you just talk with her. We all went skinny dipping with her after a concert she had in Whitehorse, in 1994 or was that 1990. Anyways, she was pretty cool, coming with us out to ear lake and sitting by a fire in the early morning.
Love her and her breathless "must get this out NOW' style. When she says "are you in or you out...and I think to myself what is this about?" (laughing)...That is my favorite part.
I only saw her in concert once but it was SO DAMN AMAZING! It was before she added the whole "horn" section to her music. It was pure raw acustic ani...it gave me chills and I will NEVER forget it! She blows me away still..
This song is about her bisexuality her individuality her independence and acceptance of who she is regardless of others expectations club and gender rules. ( Dual membership more than one club)Of her joy and acceptance and loyalty to those who love her and accept her regardless. She owes her Life to the people that she loves. ROCK ON ANNIE!
...except all the radios agree with all the tvs/and the magazines agree with all the radios/and i keep hearing that same damn song everywhere I go/maybe I should put a bucket over my head/and a marshmallow in each ear/and stumble around for another dumb numb week/for another hum drum hit song to appear.
Have you listened to any other songs by her? Do you hear the smart lyrics? She's an amazing poet and her style of finger-picking on the guitar is pretty unique to her.
Plus she is not afraid to say what she thinks. She is very political and intelligent.
But if you like mindless, meaningless pop that and doesn't require thought or talent (maybe just a G-string and some pom-poms), Britney's all yours.
I've heard some of her songs. Lyrics sound like bad high school poetry. The finger picking is cool and I'll give that to her, though their were earlier folk singers in the sixties known for that also.
The "she's not afraid to say what she thinks" part is bs. imo it's cool to be liberal, especially if you're singing in a coffee shop where you're audience is just as liberal. It'd be gutsy for a republican folk singer to be singing in underground coffee shops. I've never even heard of such thing.
Mainstream pop "musicians" today have no talent and they sing about getting rich, being popular and ass shaking. That's what I am saying. I respect Ani for going it on her own and not selling herself to the music industry companies. She does what she does because she loves it and she's successful because she good at what she does. That's the way it should be. She writes her own shit unlike most performers.
I don't understand your comment about her saying what she thinks is bullshit. That's what she does. She started from nothing, created her own record label and amassed a liberal audience by speaking her mind. A conservative musician could do the same thing.
I also understand that finger-picking has a long history (way before the sixties). What I said was her finger-picking style is unique.
It's closeminded to assume I listen to shitty music just cause I don't like the same singer as you. This is about good music. Imo ani doesn't have the true spirit of a folk musician; checkout guthrie, leadbelly, sufjan, ochs.
In a way pop music is better. It doesn't lie to you. It's aware of its superficiality yet this is disguised as "rough around the edges poetic alternative folk" when it's immature and indulgent. But we all have different opinoins. Don't insult me because I don't share yours
First of all I apologize if I offended you when I implied that you listen to Brittney Spears. When you are surrounded by nothing but pop fans you get paranoid.
But I don't think that Ani is "folk." She may have started with a folk style back in 1989 but since then she has morphed her sound into many styles (poetry, folk, funk, hip-hop etc). She's been around for about 20 years and has put out about 20 albums. If you're around long enough your music is going to change.
I don't like putting a label on artists like her because there isn't one that fits consistently and inclusively. Don't assume she's superficial because she doesn't fit into a box.
Why do you bother commenting on music you don't like? Why did you watch the video in the first place if you don't like her?? Don't waste your time, or ours.
i first discoverd this song when I was 7 and played it loud in my room because the music was infectious...had no idea it was about bi-sexuality..my parents must have been thrilled..still a great song though..!!
kaa, sometimes I wonder if we will ever see the likes of Ani again. a singer that inspires us with meaning lyrics, amazing music and all out awesomeness. anyway, thanks for putting this up.
She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.... wow. The videos of her live performances are incredible, she's a great musician, I would love to see her live one day.
meh? is this the original version of the song? or is the sound quality just bad... the actual song doesn't have some of the stuff thats in this... it sounds like its live. Love teh song!
I cant actually get my thoughts out clearly because I'm still marveling in the fact that you felt the need to judge her music and digest it as if she is self-righteous, (and even if she were, unless you know her personally, you have no real way of knowing) while wandering off and blasting whatever the hell it is you listen to for entertainment.
Personally, I do not listen to her music and think about her. I listen to her music and compare it to how things work in the real world, with people themselves, and with myself. She expresses herself well, often in the ways other people wish they could do for themselves.
People like music not only for the beat and the words, but for how it can relate to them, or the emotions it gives them, and while her music may give YOU a nasty feeling inside your stomach, it's like a splash of fresh water for those of us walking around learning to shed our fake smiles.
Now that that's out of the way, I like Ani because she's good at taking all of those things and making it something that gets stuck in her head. Yes, she sings often about herself (but no always) but when she does it rarely tends to be good. She's open about her faults and in touch with her emotions, and whether that may be cliché or not, the girls raking in more money than you.
I challenge your mindless insults by asking you what kind of music you like to listen to. Pick a band, any band, that does not have one song where they decide to sing while rolling in their own shit of either a rolex, sex, or a failed relationship.
honestly, i like her because of her earnestness and painfully honest lyrics. They could've been a page torn directly out of her diary. Its refreshing.
also, everyone's art is about themselves,
i wouldn't call her rebellious, but she is unconventional.
this was the song that got me addicted to ani.. and it was what jump started me into writing poetry.. i was 8. now..14 years later.. im still hooked to her words. i cant thank her enough..

"In a way pop music is better. It doesn't lie to you."
Now THAT'S a bunch of bullshit.
You don't have to like Ani Difranco, but I don't see why you feel the need to put her music down because it's not your cup of tea.

no, it's actually very true.

Why do you bother commenting on music you don't like? Why did you watch the video in the first place if you don't like her?? Don't waste your time, or ours.
Thanks.

It's the same for every band, every singer, etc. If you don't enjoy it, then get the hell out, but do not sit there while being an all-out hypocrite.
Sorry for any misspellings.
soadrocksk8er4life 4 years ago 9
I cant actually get my thoughts out clearly because I'm still marveling in the fact that you felt the need to judge her music and digest it as if she is self-righteous, (and even if she were, unless you know her personally, you have no real way of knowing) while wandering off and blasting whatever the hell it is you listen to for entertainment.
soadrocksk8er4life 4 years ago 4
Personally, I do not listen to her music and think about her. I listen to her music and compare it to how things work in the real world, with people themselves, and with myself. She expresses herself well, often in the ways other people wish they could do for themselves.
soadrocksk8er4life 4 years ago 7
People like music not only for the beat and the words, but for how it can relate to them, or the emotions it gives them, and while her music may give YOU a nasty feeling inside your stomach, it's like a splash of fresh water for those of us walking around learning to shed our fake smiles.
soadrocksk8er4life 4 years ago 7
Now that that's out of the way, I like Ani because she's good at taking all of those things and making it something that gets stuck in her head. Yes, she sings often about herself (but no always) but when she does it rarely tends to be good. She's open about her faults and in touch with her emotions, and whether that may be cliché or not, the girls raking in more money than you.
soadrocksk8er4life 4 years ago 6
I challenge your mindless insults by asking you what kind of music you like to listen to. Pick a band, any band, that does not have one song where they decide to sing while rolling in their own shit of either a rolex, sex, or a failed relationship.
(I'm cutting this up due to 500 limit)
soadrocksk8er4life 4 years ago 4
honestly, i like her because of her earnestness and painfully honest lyrics. They could've been a page torn directly out of her diary. Its refreshing.
also, everyone's art is about themselves,
i wouldn't call her rebellious, but she is unconventional.
montynegronow 4 years ago 3
Fair enough you don't like her but why do you actively seek out Ani DiFranco videos and then comment on how awful she is?
Grow up!
There are lots of bands/singers I don't like and I choose not to listen to them.
You're very unlikely to change someones opinion of something by leaving comments on youtube so why not just listen to music you like and enjoy?
Live and let live and all that!
