You have some good tips, but why are you using gouges? Japanese woodblock print tools are easier on the hands. McClains printmaking supplies sells great stuff.

@kubotaman87 Its when you carve a picture into a piece of wood (or something) and then add ink to that and stamp it on a paper. Thats a super basic explination...
