  • Prost slowed down so much. I wander if he had some sort of problem

  • Prost bottled it in this race, no doubt. Waving to the stewards to get it stopped as he didnt want to get embarrased by the legend Senna, who was a rookie catching him in a Toleman. Should have been Senna's first ever win in legendary circumstances but still, wrong move by Prost because if the race had lasted it wouldnt have been half points. As Lauda beat him to the title by 0.5pt he could have came 2nd and got 6pts instead of 4.5. Unlucky Alain, but Senna should have had your 1989 title anyway

  • this race was a shame. fucking political decision to gave prost the win.. fucking fia it was sennas win!

  • stefan bellof the best!

  • The stoppage was controversial, as it benefitted Prost with a Porsche-designed engine, and was made by Ickx, a Porsche employee in sports car racing. Ickx was suspended from his race control duties for not consulting with the stewards over his decision before making it. The rain was not falling as hard at this stage as it had previously been.

  • @F1nonstop.

    Alain Prost.

Senna would have won if the red flag hadn't been raised/

  • If prost wanteted to be champion he shouldn't waved hid hand. Because if that the french stewards and the french speaking jacky ickx stopped the race. because prost is french. He was just affraid that he whould lose the race.

  • Of course Prost wanted the race stopped, he would have known that

    Ayrton was catching him rapidly

  • It seems that the end of the race commentary has been cut off here and replaced with some stuff from after the race. I remembered James Hunt kicking up a little fuss at the way this race ended, so I went back and checked my tape of it from Canadian TV. The commentary is as I had remembered, with Hunt saying "this is what I would call, well, a very French decision, very French decision indeed."

Of course, in the end, Prost got screwed by this, as her lost the championship by half a point.

  • Of course it was the first "French decision", the first Ballestre favoring Prost against Senna. Jakie Ickx, was suspended for 5 years for this "French decision" because is clear that Senna overtake Prost in this 31th lap of 78. Imagine that! Senna did the fastest lap 1:54.334 in rain was the best since 1997. No doubt that Senna with a poor car, the 9th team of the previous season achieve this in his 7th race. Special mention for Stefan Bellof in his 6th GP. He was the 2nd fastest.

  • didnt lauda beat prost to the champonship by half a point? maybe prost lost himself the championship with the race stopping earyer n only getting half points

  • Maybe you're right because Bellof was disqualified, so Prost should've finished second and so he would have got six points instead of 4.5

  • Tyrrel l-Ford was disqualified in all these races for illegal car. Martin and Stefan. Just check this. It was so shame, because Bellof perform as a great driver in his 6th GP.

  • I never said anything different... After the scandal Tyrrell had never been that competitive again.

  • I mean: Stefan Bellof has a lot of potential. The story of Tyrrell is nothing to deal with the pilot.

  • @schopfheim91 except for 1990

  • @wibblewobble85 Yes because Belloff was disqualified later. The 6 points for a second place in a full distance race would have made him world champion!

  • @wibblewobble85 he lost championship with this decision, but it looks like it from this days point of view. at that moment who could ever know, that bellof will be disqualified and only half a point will be needed for prost to loose to lauda? no one. maybe prost was scared to compete in those conditions, to be beated by young rookey senna and maybe bellof, but could he know this decision will cost him world champion title?

  • did you hear that? off course senna and bellof did a great job, but the prof Prost just controlled the race, he didn't risk anything, so calm fucking down

too bad that Bellof died right in the beginning of his f1 career, he was so talented and charismatic, what a pity.

  • A perfectly good race of Ayrton Senna and Stefan Bellof our german.

    R.I.P commemorate both top talent

  • Fangio used to say he would win at the slowest speed possible. When Senna hit the chicane he was lucky not to crash , remember his team mate that year broke his legs at Brands Hatch when the Toleman's front end snapped in a crash. Prost saw Pironi's legs after his smash in '82.. by all accounts not pretty.....

  • Prost was the only guy not to make a single mistake in this race, lots of drivers were faster than him today, Senna oh so nearly crashed off at the chicane. Prost was afraid of racing in the rain since Pironi's horrific crash in the rain in '82 . Prost's thoughts were you only want to win the championship if you stay alive, remember in the 80's we lost quite a few drivers as the cars were not very safe.( as I think Patrick Tambay must have thought after the 1st corner)!

  • "Oh so nearly crashing off" is no mistake, it's just driving on the limit. Senna didn't make a mistake because every REAL mistake you commit in Monaco those days would have resulted in retirement.

  • And Stefan was near crash when he overtake the Ferrari of Arnoux in Mariveou. Senna and him was the raising stars of these race.

  • @CrumpledEar GOING SLOW IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IMAGINABLE!!! THIS IS FORMULA ONE!!! IF YOU'RE SLOW AND SCARED, RETIRE AND WATCH F1 ON TV!!!

  • Great to see the first race where the commentators were acknowledging Senna's bright future in F1

  • i hate you ickx!

    i hate you!

  • You can't blame Ickx for the accident, it was plain fatality witm much bad luck, because if Stefan'd have impacted with the other side of the car he'd likely have survived.

  • LOL what a joke of a decision.

Thanks for the video, by the way. I always wanted to watch this race.

  • You Senna supporters do know that just after Ayrton blasted passed Prost he thumped a barrier and damaged one of his wheels.

  • Senna once called Prost a coward, and this is a clear reason why.

  • Put the checkered flag away at 8:12, because Prost was no winner on that day.

A young Brazilian in a Toleman was closing much too quickly for Alain's liking, hence the manic hand-waving to stop the race...

  • pussy prost

  • 5:00 Murray's expertise is jolly entertaining...

  • If memory serves me, they had to go half race distance plus one lap before considering the full 9/6/4/3/2/1 points, else it was half of that. That said, Bellof might have catched Prost before that half and another lap. I think they thought about that. I mean, for Prost to get 6 points out of a second place he would have to go through another seven or eight laps and that could prove to be just about enough for Bellof to overtake him, leaving him with four instead of four and a half.

  • go prost!!!

  • Bellof had finished in third position, but he was disqualified,I don´t know why.

  • The Tyrrell team used illegal fuel in 1984 and so all their points were taken away from them. Also a second place of Martin Brundle in the US.

  • A imagem é da TV Japonesa

  • Quite funny: Prost in the McLaren compaining about the weather and raising his hand while Senna was pushing so hard:-) Obviously, WHY Prost wanted the race to be ended:-)

  • i don't know why everyone goes on about bellof, i mean sure what he did was very impressive but he was on a curcuit which needed no power and it was raining. bellof had an unturboed, underweight car aswell. in other words, bellofs car was better suited for this race than senna's or any turbocharged car for that matter, senna also still did the fastest lap and so he was still on track for the win, because bellof was catching him slowly doesn't say much. senna was and still is the best in the wet.

  • It is not like that, that tis race was the only thing Bellof did. The other races were also very good. Who knows, where he had gone if he could have joined Ferrari in 1986 (he had already signed a contract with them before tragedy happened).

  • @schopfheim91 let's see:

Bellof had a more suitable car, no turbo, underwheight..

He didn't know his car was illegal,

but took advantage of that anyway.

And Senna made the fastet Lap.

    He was slowly cutting distance?

Bet you, if needed, Senna was gonna push a little more from his reserve, and Bellof would be glad with second..

  • Not only did they stop the race but they considered the penultimate lap positions. You can see Prost didn't receive the checkered flag and Senna celebrates. We were quite naive those days and couldn't believe in such a manipulation.

  • Shades of two years before, 1982, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, between veteran Gordon Johncock and then young...and again, now legendary...Rick Mears. 1-2 seconds faster on each lap. Only it went to the very end, for what is probably still the greatest 500 finish ever, while the marshalls apparently didn't want this one to. Damn what corruption exists in F1...

  • It was clear that Senna was near 2s faster than Prost per lap. The rain conditions was constant in all the race: heavy. But, the black hand of Ballestre take action....against Senna for first time favoring Prost as usual. Just imagine if the race goes to 78 laps. Senna the absolute rain master against his nemesis: Alain Prost.

  • Of course the ultimate irony was Prost lost the championship that year by half a point to Lauda. Had the race run its full distance Prost would have won the championship, even if he finished second to Senna

  • very interesting thanks!

  • but not if he finished third to bellof aswell...

  • Very true, I hadn't thought of that

  • Bellof got DQed lest we forget...relinquishing his 3rd place, podium result.

  • There's no guarantee that Prost would have finished second had the full race been completed OR enough laps were completed to award full points (75% isn't it?). He was driving like a senior citizen and who's to say that Prost wouldn't have spun out or retired as well?

  • magic senna!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • First Class upload all around. I'd never seen it before and now I feel more educated, well maybe that's a little too far, but hey...

As James Hunt says somewhere "Well I think we are watching the arrival Ayrton Senna, a truly outstanding talent in Grand Prix Racing". Indeed we were James, indeed we were :-)

  • Rainmaster in action ;)

  • You must mean Bellof who was lapping faster and catching Senna.

  • Wow what a great treat, to finally see this famous race. Thanks so much for the post.

  • Holly shit - Senna is closing in 3 seconds every lap...

  • senna should have won this race...french man jackie ickx stopped the race as senna was closing in on prost...senna is ruthless in the rain...jackie ickx i hope youre reading this comment...YOU ARE PATHETIC

  • dont tell me im pathetic..i watched that race..in 84 i was 13 then

  • Jacky Ickx is Belgian!!!

  • hey where did u get this video...this was a controversial race..senna should have won this race...as far as i know jackie ickx was working for porsche...guess what prost's mclaren is powered by porsche...why was the race only stopped when senna was charging...it was raining the entire race...hmm???

  • Of course the end of the race was very controversial, but still Ickx is Belgian.

  • Even Murray Walker at 3:45 said he was surprised the race wasn't being stopped and that the conditions were some of the worst he had ever seen.

  • You are forgetting the ultimate irony of this race. Since it was stopped before the end, half-points were given out and Prost got 4.5 for winning. However, had the race run its course and Prost had finished second, the six points he would have gained would have won him the title that year instead of Niki Lauda. Clearly though the conditions were bordering on the unsafe, and the fact that Jackie "The Rainmaster" Ickx eventually stopped the race is testament to that fact.

  • full points would in fact have been awarded if the race had been stopped at or after half distance, which would have been 39 laps - so had it gone on just 8 laps more, then prost would have got the 6 points for 2nd

  • I didn't know that. Quite a satisfying fact as well.

  • i agree

  • That would be frustrating for Senna...

  • Don't forget Bellof, too.
