@themonsterjaws59 Bands that perform in class AA set the bar high for others to follow. The fact that your group will be in class AA this year is a big accomplishment, so congratulations. Remember, hard work and dedication pays off in the end. Don't think of this as a competition, just give it your best performance and have fun with it...everything else will just fall into place. Best of luck to your group this marching season!
Please, bdfan4ever, while this performance is outstanding, you really can't say that the sound tops that of Loara '69. Just the opening note would tell you that. Loara's overall depth and richness of sound was just so much more (basses, middle brass, woodwinds). This, while good, is tinny by comparison. Major chills factor in this one? Nope.
@miarocks I understand where youre coming from but, it all comes down to personal preference. I just prefer this version. The Loara one is amazing, grand, and a bit TOO bombastic for my taste.
@miarocks Some clarification is needed. While the recording of Loara in 1969 was made with professional mics feeding into a reel to reel tape recorder, the RB performance was recorded with a tiny mic built into a very small video camera. The difference in the two recordings is night and day. A tiny mic on a hand held video camera can in no way pick up the overall sounds of the band as the reel to reel recorder with pro mics. Loara 1969 was real loud but really out of tune and not very musical.
I know many people love the Loara 69' version of Purple carnival, but for my money, this is the BEST version I have EVER heard. So clean, precise, balanced. Nearly FLAWLESS.
Start to finish, Rancho Bernardo does a fantastic job on "Purple Carnival". This band woul have been a welcome, and appreciated, competitor back in the day! My heartiest congratulations to their dedicated directors and musicians, who carry on a fine southern California marching band tradition.
Loara's performance of "Purple Carnival" is remarkable - Better than most colleges! Rancho Bernardo, for its smaller size (Loara was more than 50% larger in the 60's) is inspiring, as is their marching and showmanship. If someone asked: "Who had the best southern California band between 1968 and 1972?", I'd ask "Which week?". Could've been Loara...or Glendora...or Arcadia, or Pasadena, or one of a handful more. If someone asks, "Who's best now?", I say Rancho Bernardo is best 100 or smaller.
In the mid-60's, Azusa, Arcadia and Pasadena were "The Big Three", with full, rich sounds, fine marching and good showmanship. Around '68, Loara and Glendora moved into "Major Contender" ranks, along with Vista, Anaheim, Orange Glen, Helix and several others. Loara had VERY rich low brass and LOTS of high reeds, playing "Purple Carnival" better than most college bands... But, they only did one halftime show a year, while Glendora did a fine march AND a new halftime show every other week.
Another fine musical performance by RB. Too bad about the flag drop right in front of the judges stand at the 1:02 mark. I bet this hurt their showmanship and auxiliary scores.
Amazing! It's hard to have a favorite group in the SCSBOA, when there are so many great parade bands.
