When the young and beautiful Medusa was discovered in Athenas temple making love to Poseidon, Athena turned her into a snake-haired monster - a mere glance turned men to stone. Then she sent Perseus to cut off her head. Medusa, the Serpent Goddess, seems to have been originally an Earth Goddess, vanquished and demonised as male gods (i.e. warrior culture) gained power. Snakes seem to have been a universal symbol for wisdom I have no idea why.

She was raped by Poseidon in the temple and was a devout follower of Athena - when Athena found out she sided with the male gods and turned Medusa into what she was - then Perseus goes and takes her head and after it's used is placed on the lap of the statue of Athena in Athens - how fucked up is that?! Alexander also wore her image on his armor when he went into battle.

In some versions she's raped, in others she's willing. With most myths, there's more than one variation.

@archdeaconj Because of the bible(snakes) in Norse myth the great snake ends the world they live in/ in Greek the snake causes a lot of havoc/ and in the bible the snake is the devils chosen voice to corrupt eve/ it takes wisdom and strength to do such things so the snake is worshiped for that.

So its not hard to believe the snake is the universal symbol for wisbom hence the snake is the one who the devil talk threw to convince Eve to eat the apple!!!!
