Actually, in the Criterion DVD edition commentary John Woo himself confess that there in-fact IS one cut in the scene... and that they had to do the whole thing several times because the fake elevator (it's only one floor;)) doors wouldn't close... Ahhh... pure movie magic and it's still an amazing scene...
Yeah, I heard the Fox/Lorber release commentary. He said they practiced several times, and wanted to do the scene in one take, which is what everyone was happy about. In between after the dude got shot, and them entering the elevator, you can see the cut, but it wasn't much of a cut, rather than a trim-down, or sort-of "resetting" himself to that position while the camera is rolling. At least, that's my observation.
And I have noticed that it's one floor. Pretty creative.
I asked someone and apparently the movie was low budget to a certain extent. About 4 million in USD (30 million in HKD). They said it was that way because the recorded all of the sound afterwords. Still, that software you used certainly did work wonders on the picture.
The problem with the sofware is that it does take away some detail in certain films. In the case of this one, it loses some detail in people's hair, face, and outfits, and the depth of field may become shorter and closer.
And I can see the "low-budgetedness" of the movie comparing it to others from the same years with better sound.
I may wrong, but from what I understand, "2 minutes, 42 seconds" is actually a featurette about how the scene was made. Don't quote me on that, though.
That's why I thought the first John Woo game would look something like that or Time Crisis/Crisis Zone. My first impression of Time Crisis was this scene in the movie.
I bet this scene played a major influence of 3rd person shooter games....

everything is so extravaganza. no bullet limit, countless bodies, no gun recoils, no wounds on heroes.reminds me of Story Of Ricky (1993).

Yet, it was done in one take. I wonder how many people were there with the cameraman.

This is a good print. Most of the prints I've seen give the film the appearance of being low budget.

Thank God for TMPGEnc. That software makes older movies look good.

Like "T2", for example?

No, that's American. I mean Hong Kong films.

I never heard of a featurette, but in the Criterion DVD, it shows it as a chapter in itself.

Oh, so it's just a chapter. Okay, thanks for saving me some money then.

I wonder if John Woo ever watched Goodfellas and saw that long tracking shot in the movie and said "I can do it better than that."
ghost037 5 years ago
He probably did see Goodfellas (1990), as he was a fan of Western Cinema. It also came out 2 years before Hard Boiled (1992).

Great scene. Reminds me of that Area 51 game at the arcades.
