  • @blueeyedsocalguy although what you say is definitely true, there is no point posting it on Youtube. That is just trying to stir up emotion. Yes it is sad he chose not to serve a mission. The lives he could have touched no one will ever know, but don't bash him or anyone else who chooses against it in a public area like this.

  • Heaps of fumbles!!!Heaps of Interception...Heaps Sucks!!!

  • This guy sure sucks at football. We are a third of the way through the season and he has thrown more picks than TD's.

  • mormons...

  • Can't wait for the season! Follow Jake and the boys on facebook for team info, photos, and perks

  • straight cash...so so dirty

  • You think Jimmer's got range.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy your an idiot, I was all state in basketball and tried to serve a mission... I had to come home because I had intense anxiety, depression problems and it was IMPOSSIBLE for me to survive another day out there or I probably would have killed myself... Your so close minded, and YOU are the reason the church has a bad name with ALOT of people, and why alot of good young adults like me are pushed away from the church. (i am active). FOCUS ON YOUR OWN FLAWS oh wait your perfect.

  • Dude - He looks like he sucks - I guess BYU is not Quarterback U any more.

  • you think jimmers got range? best quote ever...look forward to see what Jake can do this upcoming year...

  • Go Cougs!!

  • ya how about people that didn't go on proselyting missions I may not be as smart like everyone else but Stop with deciding on James Fredette and Jake Heaps life cuz it's their life not yours.

  • 1:43 hahaha you think jimmers got range!

  • If anyone gives the church a bad name it's the self righteous members of the church who have the "holier than thou" attitude. Jake and Jimmer have given the church plenty of publicity. People around the country are now asking questions about BYU and the church. I served my mission in upstate NY and I encountered many situations where people associated the church with jimmer fredette. I didn't know who he was at the time but everyone always had great things to say about him.

  • Ya I saw arguments about Heaps going on a mission. That is between him and the Lord and no one elsestay out of his personel life. These Players and coaches probably knows how the media works thats why you see them giving the stink eye sometimes. I served a different kinda of a mission it was not proselyting but it was worth it. There is all types of missions people can serve at.

  • For all those that dont support Jakes decision remember that those that serve missions should only do so if it is in their heart. Those that go on missions only to make family happy usually hurt themselves spiritually and/or the church. Free agency, decide for yourself thats how our father created this world for. ONE LOVE cant wait for 2011... go cougs!

  • Great shot! That was fun to watch. I love BYU!

  • What an awesome quarterback!

  • Holy crap, did that really just go in?

  • anybody know the tunes in the background?

  • @allido88 I believe it is "aint no love in the heart of the city"

  • @allido88 Agreed. What song is this? Can't use Shazam because of the talking.

  • @evanshrugged At the end, the song is the minus-track for "Heart of the City" by Jay-Z.

  • Who knows what advice he's been getting from local church leaders? Maybe they need him to be the face of BYU football, being such a great young man, for when ESPN televises all of the games and does more talk about the LDS church. Seriously, none of our business, let the kid live his life.

  • @ddzado Maybe he would be a better example as a good football player who has served a mission - that's a better missionary tool. Maybe he would be a better recruiting tool for young men to serve missions too.

  • Are we seriously debating heaps and a mission? first off its none of your business what heaps does and secondly why are we not talking about the amazing shot he made?

  • To all the Ute haters on here dissing Heaps on a mission. You're still going to have to lose to him 3 times in the future. Whether it's 3 years in a row or there is a break in between while he is on his mission is all the same. Heaps is still going to own you. I'm still interested to see the outtakes of this clip....how many times did he miss?

  • @blueeyedsocalguy the decision to serve a mission is between a person & the Lord and no one else & what do you mean that BYU is making exceptions for its public star. There are plenty of students at BYU who don't go on missions.

And just cuz you play football doesn't mean you can go on a mission. I had a missionary in my mission who played college football and had severe anxiety and had to go home. Football & missions are two whole different ball games

  • When you hold your University up as a shining example of standards and serving missions, but make exceptions for the public star of your football team, yeah, it's more than just his business. The level of rationalization here is uncanny.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy It is clear that all worthy priesthood holders have been counseled to prepare themselves to serve a mission, and from your comments it sounds like you headed that council. I am confused however where the prophet counseled us to attack and publicly ridicule those that did not serve a mission. Following God's commandments does not give us the right to look down upon those that have not yet done so.

  • That was an awesome shot!

  • Try telling that to the Bishop when you choose not to pay tithing, or choose to drink alcohol and expect everyone to be ok with it.

It's sad that you don't see the hypocrisy.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy The decision to serve a mission is between a person and the Lord. It's none of your business. While I do think he should, it's a much easier decision for me to make for him (or you to make for him) than it is for him to make for him. I was never the top QB prospect in high school or the starting QB for a major FB program as a freshman. That's a tough decision with major sacrifice, but, again, not mine to make or even yours. Just support him for the decision he ultimately makes.

  • @scottgower Support him for choosing football over obeying a call from the Lord. Really? Even Vai Sikahema says playing D! football should not be a reason to skip a mission.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy I just think a lot more damage is done to the Church by people who think a personal decision like that is their business. How many YSAs that don't serve missions don't feel welcomed at church? That's wrong. It's not your call to make.

  • @scottgower I agree but idk hes just looked up to as a role model and all. It makes it harder

  • @scottgower

I guess there's a difference between personal decision and obligation. Do I look any differently at those who don't serve missions? No. Should they go on a mission. Absolutely. It is a personal decision, but I was raised that when I made a promise, it was my duty and obligation to keep it. It's the same thing here. You promised you would, go and do it. They miss out on way too much not doing it, I don't care how great of a football player you are.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy wow... some day you'll hopefully realize things aren't always "black and white" or "right or wrong." It's a tough lesson to learn. I used to be the same way. Just because the President of the church says to do something, doesn't mean you shouldn't search your heart and decide what is right for you. Your going to call that blasphemous, but the leaders of the church aren't infallible, even when they're "speaking as a prophet."

  • You want to talk about bad publicity for the church? Look at everyone arguing about the choices that someone has complete agency to make. It's not your business, chill out,

  • Blueyedsocalloser, get a life! You have nothing better to do than surf YouTube and criticize a 19 year old kid for not going on a mission. Your judgmental comments only harm the church more than Jake not going on a mission. Jake will bring more good PR to the church than you could ever dream of. Seriously, get a life!

  • "I repeat what prophets have long taught – that every worthy, able young man should prepare to serve a mission," said President Monson. "Missionary service is a priesthood duty – an obligation the Lord expects of us who have been given so very much."

Consider that the injunction doesn't make allowances for Division I scholarship athletes, or loopholes for those who have secured a starting position on a major college football or basketball program."

  • How convenient that you left out the next phrase from the handbook, "Because all worthy, able young men should serve full-time missions, leaders give special attention to helping them prepare, particularly those who seem uncertain about serving.."

If the Prophet and the Lord asked you, and you just choose to throw that away, then where is your testimony? it is a terrible example for our YM who are counseled every day to serve a mission to see exceptions for football.

  • who really cares if they go on a mission. this is why members in utah who arent "strong" in the church call you guys molly mormons. just because heaps or fredette dont choose to serve doesnt make BYU or mormons hypocrites. i mean we belive in free agency and when someone chooses to use their individual free agency many people are quick to judge. not all RMs are good people shown by the many who serve and come back and drink or smoke. isnt it better to not serve than to serve because your forced

  • to. missionary work isnt for everyone

  • I think it"s his AMAZING haircut that makes him throw that good!

  • @blueeyedsocalguy The statement from the 1st presidency also goes on to say that "Those individuals not able to meet the physical, mental, and emotional demands of full-time missionary work are honorably excused and should not be recommended."

I don't know any of these athletes personally & can't speak to whether or not they meet these qualifications, but I'm guessing you don't either.

  • @BYUSportsNutForever Please, if you can play football you can go on a mission.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy You are also forgetting there is new council concerning missionary service that came out in 2002 from the First Presidency that doesn't say every member a missionary. It says, "Full-time missionary service is a privilege for those who are called through inspiration by the President of the Church. Bishops & stake presidents have the serious responsibility to identify worthy, qualified members who are spiritually, physically, & emotionally prepared for this sacred service."

  • @blueeyedsocalguy I've been on a mission & believe it was one of the best experiences of my life. However, your comments that these athletes are some how being let of the hook and lesser individuals or even hypocrites for not serving are ridiculous.

There is no agreement w/ any BYU student that when they come to BYU they're expected to serve a mission. The expectation is they live the honor code & as far as we know they have & deserve to be the face of BYU just as much as the next person

  • While I believe the mission is fantastic--Jimmer didn't go on a mission and look at the pub he is bringing to the church and BYU.

Jake is a great kid..don't be too quick to judge.

  • @surprisinglyj The prophet didn't say go on a mission or bring a lot of publicity to the Church, he said go on a mission. And since when is making BYU fans happy a mission? Nobody will join the Church just because Jimmer plays great basketball.

That's why we get called hypocritical.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy actually, I couldn't agree more. I just feel we need to be careful calling out hypocrites--we are in abundance.

Ironically, it appears BYU and the Church believes TV exposure and sports will be a tremendous missionary tool, otherwise the decisions made in the past years would be pointless.

There are missionaries serving on Mormon.org and Facebook. Perhaps this is a new mission.

    :) Godspeed

  • @surprisinglyj

So when a bishop asks a young man when he is going on his mission, and the young man replies "Fredette didn't go on one, Heaps didn't go on one, why should I go on one?" what will he say? Nah, I'm not buying it. The Church has plenty of RM athletes without making excuses for those who don't heed the call.

IIRC the only healthy YM serving missions on Facebook and Mormon.org are those in the MTC waiting for visas or injured.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy it goes deeper than that, when RM who excels at sports (IE Austin Collie), chooses to play on Sundays...oh yeah...it's a job. Prophet says don't work on Sundays...Everyone has their reasons and I believe we should support them in those decisions...then magic happens!!

  • @surprisinglyj

We should avoid working on Sundays, but when you have a job requiring it to support your family, you do it - police, fire, doctors, whatever. But when the prophet tells you what you should do, football deosn't seem a very good reason.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy That is why it is not our place to judge. Each person has their reasons. Trust they are doing what they feel is best for them, their families, and their beliefs. I can think of a lot of good reasons why drinking Mountain Dew is worse than coffee.

  • @blueeyedsocalguy if the young man says that to his bishop, that is where the process ends. There is no bishop in his right mind that would recommend him to go on a mission.

  • The face of BYU is a kid who refuses to go on a mission?

"Every young man should go on a mission" - unless you are one of the elite sports groups, apparently.
