im in 8th grade too, just played it at a band concert also, and i gotta tell you, that the piece you probably played was the easy version. This is much more difficult.
My school's band "symphonic winds" is playing this at our concert this weekend. I play alto saxophone and it is such an amazing piece. I love my part and when you hear everything put together it is so magical. :)
tis was a bit helpful since our band is going to play this, this winter concert. This year, i got promoted to 1st cornet! But it was such a large jump, i have to practice.
we are playing this in my high school band and the 2nd flute part is insane because it is a harmony to the 1st part and so it sounds nothing like anything by it's self.
I think the strings sound good at the beginning - really movie-scale, but i love the sound of just woodwinds at 0:50 and onward pretty much. Oh, and the strings at 1:38 are haunting. Otherwise - a wind piece. A clarinet section would sound much better at 2:17. and brass can cover Hark the herald angels sing without the need for strings. There's my justification:P
our high school band and choir do something every year and this is the song we have been doing for the last two years, next year we are getting a new song but it will be sad to not be singing this one, its very entertaining to sing this one, sadly the band always drowns out the choir, i cant find and vidoes with the choir and band,
i play clarinet in a wind orchestra and we play this! I think its better without strings but then I would say that!
At the concert we all dress up in the most ridiculous christmas costumes...chrsitmas lights and tinsel everywhere. Its really fun. and in the silent night part the rest of the band sing along, i have to try so hard not to laugh!
My band does this song every year for the christmas show, along with Adeste Fideles, with every person from all 3 band classes on stage, and all the seniors dress in christmas themed costumes, and during silent night all the senior low brass clink their mouthpieces together like chimes, and during the trombone melody part that yusukekidsister11 was talking about, ALL the trombones stand and play as loud as we possibly can...
i was playing in our partner band's concert for jazz band. i stayed to see christmas festival, because as i said before we play it every year, but this year's seniors are 3 of the most amazing that will ever graduate.
and the three that performed antics at their concert yesterday, i will truly miss them.
it sounds like we're not the only band to perform antics before having the melody =]
it seriously should be my last year, and I know that next year, in our band, i'll be the only one left, and i know i can't perform an antic or make our band director laugh like they could.
having the melody makes me feel as if i'm truly in the feeling of christmas =]
we also did this for our band director's father's tribute concert.
but i've spoken too much.
just thought i'd let all y'all know how much this song means to me, especially this year.
a partner band of ours did this song at the end of their concert as they do every year.
three friends of mine in the trombone section, when its time for trombones to play during "o come all ye faithful" they put christmas hats on and stood up for our director.
two of them are seniors they will be greatly missed, and i'm sure what they did will be remembered forever =]
this is the best christmas song that will ever be played in band.
its pretty good but the violins need to play out more when they have the melody. i think the full orchestra arrangement because it just sounds weird without the strings in it.
...why is the intro too fast and "Deck the Halls" too slow? It's the other way around.

you're right. they key signatures are beastly, but mannnn they sure are tough on a Bb clarinet. Hence, yay for clarinet in A!

The piece is not hard technically at all. The only the hard about this piece is to play it musically.

I played this once with Batuta Youth Orchestra here in Colombia. I love the "L'stesso tempo" fragment. Great Performance.

Great playing, though an odd arrangement of the piece I must say.
I prefer the Wind Ensemble arrangement (sounds more "earthy" with winds playing only also).
Great performance at any rate.

I guess you have never heard of the Boston Pops playing this with Arthur Fiedler (sp)?
I like band arrangement better as well.
