This scene was by far the saddest out of all of the Z Fighters deaths because unlike the other timeline no one can be wished back to life anymore. This time death is death. Really sad for Trunks to see his only friend and mentor killed, him not being able to do anything. Just shows you that becoming a ssj takes a lot more than just screaming, like some people say.

I still think Future Gohan & Future Trunks resemble Zack Fair & Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. I mean, both Future Gohan & Zack Fair were Future Trunk's & Cloud Strife's only person to really look up to, plus they learned a lot from their respective mentors. Separate timelines. Simple concept.

Goku dies, shortly after defeating Frieza (heart virus), androids attack, killing all the Z fighters, except Trunks and Gohan. Gohan gets killed, Trunks turns SSJ. Trunks goes back in time warn the Z fighters of the Androids and gives Goku a cure to the virus (made after Goku's death). All the events create an alternate timeline, which the DBZ series follows, eventually leading up to DBGT, with the Trunks you're more familiar with.

This is easily the most depressing scene in DBZ. In fact, this and the scene before this might actually be the darkest part of the DBZ anime. Gohan (the most noble and badass version of him, arguably) dying violently and left face down in a puddle, Goku's genetic line going extinct (Future Gohan obviously had no kids, and Goten didn't exist in this timeline), Trunks losing the closest thing he had to a father and becoming the LAST saiyan alive...yeah, doesn't get much darker than this.

That what when Gohan first touched SSJ2-training with Goku in the chamber. Without Goku or the Time Chamber, there was no way to unlock Gohan's hidden potential. What we see with Future Gohan is probably as good as Gohan could have done on his own. Not bad (considering how little help he had), but not enough. Perhaps F. Gohan achieved SSJ2 in other world, though.
