Cont; Felt padding on the end allows a forward wt bias for balance, protects the base from crushing during firing acceleration, and does provide some aerodynamic stabilization.Brennekke slugs use a much harder lead alloy than most American Foster type slugs and lack the "skirt" that soft Foster types use to expand & facilitate obturation in the bore.
"Rifling" ;The act or process of cutting or machining spiral grooves. The slug has rifling.. it appears evident from the lack of spin imparted, that the bore it has been fired from does not.The slots or grooves found on modern Brenekke & Foster types are not intended to impart spin in any way. Rather, they allow the soft lead slug to "center " align in widely varying shotgun bores,& swag down to fit tight or loose chokes at the end.
The rifling has nothing to grip on (smooth bore barrel) and so imparts no spin. The myth is that the grooves grip the air and cause a slight spin but it doesn't have much of an effect on the trajectory. The main thing that makes this at all accurate is the felt padding attached to the back of the slug. It provides some drag to keep the slug on a straight trajectory, though you can almost see it tipping downward as it exits the frame.
While open chokes generally work best for slugs, I have a fixed full choke .410 that absolutely loves the brenneke 3 inch mag slugs. Sub 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards are the norm
i guess for the bullets to spin, the barrel realy need to be rifled, and even if it spins, it probably wont start untill couple feet after leave the barrel
common misconception...the "rifling" that you see on those foster slugs are simply there so that the bullet can swag down through smaller chokes. And the lack of spin is why those slugs are only good out to 70 yards or so, 100 max and thats pushing it
the reason "rifled" slugs don't spin is simple. While they do have those angular vanes on the side of them, these are so (as crudestkill put it) "the bullet can swag down through smaller chokes" this is correct. Normally, the air hitting these vanes would exert sufficient forces to spin the slug, but since it is traveling at supersonic speeds, there is a low pressure (less air) area behind the shock wave, which forms at the tip of the slug, less air = less force, not enough force to spin it..
The reason they have "rifling" is to detonate on impact and shoot acid into the target's kidney's.

It was a rifled slug but it had no spin on it,curious.

I thought the fins on the slug were so that it could pass through choked barrels- obviously only slightly choked- with cylinder bore being best....
