  • :51 HE IS STARING INTO MY SOUL

  • this song is life.

  • I usually read while listening to music. Kevin Devine demands my undivided attention.

  • Love red head men they are pink like strawberrys and vanilla and with ginger bread cookies with a manley musk , it takes a man to be red headed so handsome.

  • i love getting lost in his songs

  • clap clap

  • K-dev is right. America needs to wake up, stop promoting, and advocating horrible things in the name of democracy. This is a great song.

  • Such an Important song.

  • it really is an awesome hoodie.. i love this song though xD

  • great lyrics...but something about this guys voice is incredibly annoying

  • Kevin has an amazing, unique voice.

Amazing guy. When i met him back in 08, we had quite a long conversation about one of the podcasts from 07. He's a really great guy, and epic on stage with his band.

  • I could only aspire to the lyrical integrity and, dare I say genius, of this man. Absolutely striking song.

  • my favoritee :))))

  • so amazing

  • Veg* Kev

    is smart

  • I enjoyed the lyrics...thanks for posting!

  • the best artists are the hardly famous!!!

    Mr. Devine is one!!

  • "It's a conflict diamond on your bride to be".. Kevin Devine is a genius...that's why he's still around....

  • i love the world and trees

  • hippy, lol just kidding. i coundnt help it.

  • haha i was joking but no problem.

  • No, actually its a Gibson. I saw him play it last night.

  • pause it at 39 seconds, its a gibson bro.

  • i love your name. and i like the fact that you commented on this because he reminds me of elliott smith... who i miss greatly

  • someone please message me what kind of guitar he uses. i know it's a taylor. but what is the exact name of this one he uses? thanks.

  • looks like a gibson songwriter to me.

  • j-185 acoustic with a cutaway

  • contradiction is what we live, all around, everyday.

  • Not everyone. It's rare but there aren't weak people everywhere.

  • ..yes there are.

  • Its a ginger playing guitar

  • i luv this song!!! it's so sad :[

  • pure genius!

  • well shit i was impressed.

  • though eventually I was impressed, but not as much as if he had been serious or possibly been less vague with his message

  • shut the fuck up

  • hahaha k pce Devine worshippers!!! lol

  • ye man I agree, and he does seem to be thinking "tehe that was such a good line, oh man this song is awesome, im so awesome."

  • Interesting in the beginning, and some parts of the song, he is smiling big time while the song itself is actually incredibly depressing. Unless I'm getting the song wrong.

I am supposing this song is about how the world will 'burn' or end due to the failures and cruelties throughout it.

Also, he seems to be blaming gods when he says 'its just another bag of bones for the gods to sort.' Which also seems contradictory to his phrase "He hears the call of milk and honey from the afterlife"

  • I don't think they contradict each other. The line "another bag of bones for the gods to sort" is said from the perspective of the person dying for their religion, basically saying that any deaths or pain caused by his actions is on the god's shoulders. Kevin seems to be describing the "martyr's" position. Also, "Hears the call of milk and honey..." is simply a reference to the motive of the martyr. Most religions support the belief that you will be rewarded in the afterlife.

  • Kevin is not smiling. That is the way he sings. Look at the expression lines on his face when he sings. BTW, this whole song is about religion fucking up the world amongst other ideas. It covers the young American christian soldier with his ideals contrasted against the radical muslim suicide bomber. Something to think about Frapp......

  • no he's smiling .. . and close but what's an argentinian girl got to do with religion . . .

  • not a god damn thing....re-read what I wrote. He covers several topics in this song, but religion sticks out more than anything, at least to me. Thats the beauty of music. I disagree with you. Get over it.

  • argentine girls are hot dude

  • very very very hot

  • Comment removed

  • my attempt to dismantle this song is that he's actually being satirical of the good n bad. That really we all make excuses for everything to make us seem right (religion, war, conflict diamonds(that are so pretty and we dont really know if the kids got hurt . . .) and that the truth is that in the end we all die anyway so whatever we earned is ours but expect to be owed nothing fabulous because you were a good christian or a brave soldier

  • He played this just after he said, "There's one song I could play right now that just about everyone in this store would know all the words to." He then proceeded to play the intro of Smells Like Teen Spirit. xD But he played this instead. =]

  • I can't get enough of this song.

  • I can't wait to go buy this.

  • I learned this guy from My Sister. She would listen too him and Elliot Smith ( hes a really good singer too check him out) and i would ask who they where and the music was amazing! (: . I might go too his concert in June. Most People dont do live there self on youtube and sound good. Nut he is amazing.

  • simple and effective. great command with words.

  • One of the best songs I've heard from him.

    Brother's Blood, though... wow.

His old stuff is amazing, too.

  • reminds me of keith goodwin, this is my first time seeing this guy and im quite impressed

  • hes amazing, i cant download this song anywhere though, do anyone know where i can?

  • limewire

  • ahh, he's so fucking amazing.

    awesome.

if you want the mp3 of the album version (it's harder/more distorted than the 7" version) or the mp3 (of this exact thing), give me your email add. and i'll send it!

  • Go buy the CD. Musicians like Kevin are losing everything because people can get their music for free. The leak of his new CD is ruining sales. If you like the song, you should support the artist. It's one way to keep their music coming.

  • I support by going to shows. There is nothing wrong with downloading a few songs. I buy some, download some and go to shows. I am a struggling student..I'm pretty broke. Not of of us can afford it. I am sure KD would be fine with what I am doing. The dude just wants to downlaod the song. Relax.

  • it's on itunes now.

  • Don't download KD's stuff. Buy it.

    He needs the support.

  • his lyrics are so moving!

  • Usually songs on this topic are really lame and generic in my opinion but this is just amazing.

  • my fav video of this song

  • his voice makes me melt. his lyrics are amazing, from his experiences, and actually have meaning.

  • i love him so much<3

when his voice like cracks, i die. this man has the power to seriously make me cry because of how beautiful and how emotional everything he writes and sings is. it's insane.

  • ditto to everything rahohreplica said. i love him so much ahhhhh

  • kevin devine is amazing

  • w00t. this is so nugz. i cannot WAIT for kevs new cd.

  • im pretty sure its retarded to have this whole arguement about the song.

if you dont like it, then dont have the volume on

if you like it, try talking about somewhere other than youtube

im pretty sure he would rather have people listen to and realize what his music is about, whether they agree with it or not, and make their own opinion.

    thank you.

  • this dude is unreal & his new album is going to blow people away

  • i saw a hoodie just like it at kohls but its green/purple, sorry im color blind

  • I can't wait for the next album...

    His and Brand New's...

  • damn i want that sweatshirt i wonder where he got it? If any one knows let me know.

  • Probably hot topic haha

  • I have one that looks like that. I got it from Pac-Sun

  • "well either way i realize that my shit's about as small as it could be but that makes me feel worse for even feeling this bad in the first place."

  • There's a war starting soon and all the flags will keep waving, Daniel's twenty year old friend will be ready, willing, and waiting.

  • He's a marine and he told me

And it makes me sad, really really fucking sad

    But at least he'll act

  • I'll just bite my tongue and then say:

    "Daniel, you wish him luck"

I pray that he comes back

For his mother's sake, and then I'll drink

    Those thoughts away

    I've gotten good at that

  • why are we quoting "Ballgame" this is "Another Bag Of Bones"...

i mean dont get me wrong,"Ballgame"s freaking awesome but go to a "Ballgame" video to comment on it.

"Theres a species disappearing, all the birds fly south in a January heatwave and pulsing crowd."

  • ...but the thing is, they not commenting on Ballgame. It's a continuing message. A common link between the songs, at least in the mentioning of war.

  • aaanyway, this song is pretty powerful.

    i love it.

  • hahaha don't you just love it when you have to state the obvious?

thanks for clarifying our randomness anyway :p

  • @Halloween413 He's a marine and he told me, and it makes me sad, yeah really really, fucking sad, but at least he'll act.

  • these lyrics are so amazing. its basically the only song i listen to while driving now.

ive never experienced such imagery from a song before, and its constantly making me think. i honestly think this is one of the best songs in history.

  • I'm pretty sure the comment from

mikevsthebus is one of the most ignorant things i have ever heard. Yes, this song is acoustically pleasing to the ear but if you don't listen to the lyrics then you are missing the whole point of the song....

  • Wahts up. We just wanted to let you know that we featured your video on The Song of the Week. If you want to see what else has been featured check out ThisWeeksSong . com This is a great video for this song thanks for adding it.

    Thanks,

    Chris and Mike

    The Song of the Week

  • who cares what he is talking about..it sounds awesome.

  • Hey, kyle..Fuck you.

  • Kylehenry9 you are to caught up in politics to fully enjoy this song. Kevin is obviously refering to the us with the line "its a flag draped casket down an oil well" but that one line isnt the entire song. the song is about the sins of mankind destroying this world we have been given and how in the end we will have to pay. and being a republican has nothing to do with how someone views something, stop grouping people together for no reason, there is nothing derogative about being one.

  • Where did he get that jacket?

  • KYLEHENRY9 IS A FAGGOT!

  • well i bet your a republican

  • That's sort of the appeal to Kevin though. He isn't trying to convert anyone else he is basically reflecting how he perceives the world and he doesn't seem to care what others think. How other people view his songs is just a matter of perspective and I respect that.

  • Number 1 if you don't like what he's saying no one is making you listen to fucking Republican bastard. This is America you can pick what you watch on youtube. All he is saying is nothing but truth and expressing his opinion of this fucked up nation. If we had a better president in office we wouldnt have these problems he has to sing and try to get everyone informed about. He is saying what's on the mind of most of the people in America, he;s just fortunate enought to get to tell more people

  • ok i agree kind of with mikey but i hate it when people keep saying how fucked up this country is and how bad our president is and shit. yeah bush isn;t the best president but hell we elected him, and this is the greatest country in the world, yeah theres some things i'd like to change but were lucky as hell to live in america were we don;t have to worry about having somewhere to sleep at night or something to eat

  • This song is social commentary about how citizens WORLDWIDE have become just another bag of bones. Kevin doesn't reflect on the positives because it's not positive. You're allowed to do a lot of things, but he talks about how we take that for granted. The common attitude of today is to "'go get what's yours' until there's nothing left over to go get no more." It's not who has the most oil that's the problem, it's that people are greedy enough to trade another bag of bones for just a little more.

  • I understand how you might feel that way. But to me this song isn't just highlighting our country, it seems more a song about the problems of the world as a whole and how we're just ignoring the big problems we have and eventually we'll have to pay for those problems. I'd consider myself fairly conservative and even still I can appreciate good lyrics.

  • So, are you trying to imply that because we have the right to express our opinions, we should not express them? I'm not trying to be rude, that's an actual question.

Furthermore, I believe this song covers a lot of issues that are not focused on the United States. Examples are civil unrest in foreign countries and global warming.

As for the line, "it's a flag draped casket down an oil well," he is not the only person who has proposed that the war in Iraq is a war over oil.

  • if you actually listen to the lyrics he only references the us one, he makes more references to decline in the humanity of the world then he does the us. the song has very little to do with the us in particular, its mostly about how the human race has destroyed not only the earth but the bridges we've built with other countries. He's not dissing on the us, hes simply trying to say that we made our bed and we have to lie in it and the lyric"it's a flag.." he never specified which nations flag

  • I first seen him play this song in england earlier this year and it was recieved very well

  • yeah your an idiot

  • hey, this just in: if you REALLY love your country, you're not afraid to criticize it. that's how great countries become even better.

  • absolutely beautiful

  • Simply amazing, I've always loved him more live though, he seems more intense. The song is nothing short of gorgeous though.

  • where can you get a hoodie like that, hahaha.

  • thinkin the same thing

  • it's so nice. i want one.

  • so nice

  • hoodies from cardboard robot

  • you are the fucking man.

  • this song is very confusing and complex but brilliant. does anyone know what it means?

  • seriously?

most of the song is about how fucked up the world/mankind is

and the end is saying we're getting what we deserve, and soon

  • God, Kevin never disappoints. This is so beyond fantastic. 2:00 and over is so passionate and amazing. The lyrics are incredibly powerful for such a simple song.

  • Can anyone help me out with the little lick he plays between verses?

  • 2nd fret d string pulloff

    3 fret a string pulloff

    thats it

  • Amazing.

This should be distributed like mad.

  • dude, why don't more people recognize kevin? this is pure gold and it only has 313 views?

    honestly.

  • towards the end, when he gets really enthusiastic and loud, is incredible.

  • this is such a good song... i wish i could find it somewhere to download

  • ughhhh, i know man.

    its so good.

    unreal.

  • if you use livejournal, I think someone uploaded it to the indie_exchange community :]

  • *drools*
