Both hands look very relaxed however I understand that simply standing very still and with such a rigid posture may lead to the suspicion of tension but she really wouldn't be able to play the way she does if she was as tense as you thought. Very relaxed I would argue. I agree; an absolutely amazing violinist! :)
(In a southern voice) Ain't never seen a girl play'n the fiddle like that in my entire life. I bet she could play "the Devil went down to Georgia" reel gud!
Oh I love Mutter's play. She is so musical and her style is just perfect and seems to suit her personality so well. More please! Thanks for sharing this.
as a pretty normal football loving ass wipe i find this music uplifting and well just pretty fucking wonderful so fuck you and me and everybody else god its doing my head in
Spare a thought for the pianist in any Beethoven violin sonatas or the like. They invariably need to display the same degree of virtuosity as the soloist but only pick up the crumbs when the accolades are handed out. I am not prejudiced. I speak as a violinist.
This is great! They play so well together, i particularly liked phrasing and articulation. One thing that would have made the performance better for me though, her vibrato and trills were ever so slightly too intense (4:40 ~ felt like a mosquito was buzzing in my ear).
What a great combination these two are. I love her phrasing. Anne-Sophie to some of us is like part of the furniture (does this translate into German?), she has been around for so long. Let us not take ever her for granted though. To my mind, Anne-Sophie is up there with the greats - Oistrakh etc.
Lambert Orkis is the ideal partner for her. What a nice urbane chap he is.
For me , classical music is like Baroque architecture in audio form.Have wanted to learn the piano for the last 8 years, and now Mutter makes me want to learn the violin.
It's interesting that all the comments are about the violinist, when Beethoven was a pianist, and the piano usually has at least an equal role in his sonatas.
I saw her live in2008 in Vancouver. It was a GREAT concert. I found out today she will be back in November. Along with Yuri Bashmyet who I saw in Kiev in 2002. I will be in the front row and wish summer was over already.
God said let there be sound and rythym so that man, and beast may know my true nature. Man took Gods gift and shackled it, repressing the truth that God intended to share with humanity. God intervened and Beethoven was born....
I understand what you are talking about and I, too enjoy those recordings. It is simply a matter of taste and I have found that there is not one artist in which i favor all of their recordings. Some artists play different composers better and I prefer Anne-Sophie Mutter for Beethoven.
Any decent violinist can perform a piece with dynamics and good technique. However, not all musicians can make a new interpretation like this. When judging violinists, I look more for their ideas and i appreciate the talent that Anne-Sophie Mutter has for interpreting music. I feel her earlier works lack creativity. We don't need just ANOTHER Beethoven Sonata.
So as a violinist i wonder how on earth could Beethoven have written violin music? I wasn't aware he could play? To write the stuff you would need to know where strings ended, fingerings, positions, different types of bowing techniques and such. This has always baffled me. He took the legs off of his piano so he could feel the vibrations through the floor. I just don't see how he could know it all? That goes for a lot of composers. I think I'm missing something here lol.
yes you are missing a lot, first of all, Beethoven also played violin, but that doesnt matter.
Composers learn about each instrument, individually and together, they learn about their range capabilities and strong sides. you dont need to play inst. to learn about it, even nowadays in universities there is such thing as orchestration and analysis, as well as texture techniques. To write for orchestra and for instruments you dont play, you need to learn about them listening, thats it.
that was his later years...when he got deaf...he was really gifted and he was like mozart except the styling is different like all the composers before..they had to know the basic instruments like that to make a concerto..
I love her playing, her tone, her characterful playing of this music. It is imaginative, robust, refined, gorgeous. And I really admire her beautiful presentation.
The interpretation is great. Makes me think of Beethovens quartets.
YUM! This is ear candy and I don't understand the so called "purists" who say - "oh no - Beethoven would never a done it like this!" Did you KNOW Beethoven? Was he your room mate? As Katt Williams sez -"Haters Hate Winners." It is beautiful music - fine enough for closing your eyes where the good dreams all open as they must.
at the least... she doesn't bore me with the music... and as long as it doesn't sound robotic... until then thats how I begin to understand the reason of why do we always need to vibrate our left hand when more than 2 beats were played...
yea. heard of that.. just that i don't understand why they exist... until one day i saw this kid.. He could play all the chords but they arent as nice... sound robotic and sleepy without the "vibrato"... until I listened to this
I had my doubts about this woman, but now I am sure. She is trying to be too clever by pulling the music here and there. This is not Beethoven style, it is superficial. Let's hope she can be more mature when she grows up.
Oh you don't even have to be a cynic to say that this is ASM being too clever with Beethoven. You're just being honest to the music. This is pretty appalling, in my opinion. It ain't Beethoven. At all. I'm cringing.... sorry, fans !
Ehh, it doesn't really sound like they're making music. It sounds more like they're playing what they have been rehearsing everyday. It doesn't sound bad, but it definitely could've been better. Some parts especially sound great. Great performances are great throughout.
I love this performance. At first I thought it a little superficial, but it's wonderfully light and active while refraining from any sloppy indulgences. Fantastic.
I don't think the instruments juxtapose quite right with this interpretation, its propably her fault for being "so good". There are some good parts though.
Yeah, it's weird. I try to play without one sometimes and sometimes I can play fine without it and the violin does resonate more so you get a better sound. But other times it's not comfortable at all so I use a playonair pad which is nice cos it's not as restricting as a shoulder rest but it stops my collar bone from hurting!
Anne Sophie Mutter plays with her own style which is instantly recognizable. As Commander says, "it draws you in". She is a real Beethoven exponent. I think personally she is one of the greats, up there with Heifetz and co. She is also a very classy lady. I loved this whole series when it came out on TV.
I love this.... I agree about the "robotlike" part you all said though.... I think that the musicians energy and presence must seduce the audience as well. The music is important, but the musician must show his soul while playing. I did not see that.
I love Mutter's Beethoven. Its so unique and it really draws you in. I know she's a soloist at heart, but I would love to hear her play first fiddle in some Beethoven quartets. I love them and I wonder what they'd sound like with her distinct style.
ugh... i couldn't disagree more about "roboticall movements" and "none musically" for hahn--- the way i see it, hilary plays and lets the music speak for itself, without overaccuenting her own personality along with her performance... performing music doesn't have to be about showmanship... not that anne sophie is, but i think it's possible for musicians to approach the same piece differently and still both be correct
Mutter is better than that creepy monster with roboticall movements( hahn) you just can not enjoy her music she's dreadfull, may she is one of the best violinist of our time, but she's pure technic. with none musically! I prefer anne sophie a million of times
what i appreciate is her ability to make this seem SO effortless and simple... this is SUCH a difficult piece to play! and her vibrato is unique to her- hilary hahn will always be the best violinist, but she's still pretty amazing
I like the way she plays. It's signature. But her vibrato is a little shaky. I don't know, it just seems 'off'. It's pretty, but weird. Like, a hint of eerie somberness comes with the beauty. I don't know. Anyways, good job!
good interpretation but it is,at last, only interpretation..beethoven has improvised his music - classical interpretation is absolutely overestimated. a point : "Do not follow the old masters´steps, but seek what they were seeking... " Basho (1644-1694) : japanese haiku - master :-) ! ..you wonna see/hear something realy innovative - how to improvise classical music ?! look for video : "bach sarabande jazz guitar" ! ..or visite renatorozic dot com ..you ll be surprised .. :-)
Would you all please notice that Mutter is no more violin pupil, she found her individal brilliant style of interpretation! Musicnotes are like chewing gum that needs to be chewed...
I guess boys can do it so can this girl ... she too has announced her retirement .... no more concerts??I don't know why I get nostalgic when the great ones fade way ... what will happen to the violin ???
