@nathanalexander28 Thank you for your comment! To be honest, I'm not really satisfied with the outcome of this one, it doesn't swing well. But, I'm still pretty sure that was how Large Pro chopped the samples though. I want to redo the same beat again on ES-1, but I've been very busy!
@multipoly210 I think he applied low-pass filter on the sample, that's why you don't hear the wah wah guiter. But, I'm pretty sure I sampled the same parts. I heard there is low-pass filter on SP-1200, and I think he used it for this beat.
I just watched this video again...Hats off to the effort you put into remaking these beats! It's truly commendable that you use the actual records and don't settle for anything less....The OG Sample listings in your video description are also very useful!!
SO THATS HOW HE DID IT!!! SINCE THIS JAM CAME OUT MY DUDES AN I JUST DIDNT KNOW HOW PRO REMOVED THE "WHAT CAN I DO" VOCAL FROM THIS JAM !!!DAMN TOOK ME 20 YEARS TO FIND OUT!!!! HAHA ..NICE WORK SIR!!
Textbook breakdown, you are the demolition man of beats! Been digging on Breaking Atoms the last few months, nice to see this beat stripped down to its elements.
Listening to the instrumental, I was struck by the serious G-funk vibe. I was trying to think where I heard the Gwen McCrae sample and then it hit me: Compton's Most Wanted - Hood Took Me Under. Extra-P got it first tho.
@Elektriber There is a reason why I put beep in the very beginning of the video clips; it helps to sync sound and video on YouTube. I had out-of-sync issue with YouTube upload, but with the beep in the beginning (any sound will do) prevent from sound and video out of sync.
Ok, I had to go back & check your first 30 some seconds of the vid! Large Pro played a nice chop game! He chopped around that vocal & made it so smooth! You did it too! You had to be meticulous to do that right! At least I think that's what you both did! Let me know if I was right, if not, you don't have to give it away!
@Sinosure I believe you got it right. I believe I did exactly the same way Large Pro did (although my version sounds a bit awkward; there are two samples to cover up the "What can I do" chorus part; the sample that is triggered on 7th beat and 15th beat, and the open hi-hat sample, are taken from different part of the song. I could not find any other ways to make the same beat.
Considering that Large Pro created this beat about 20 years ago (time goes first!), he definitely changed hip hop production. On one was chopping sample like he did at that time. (TR Love of Ultra Magnetics was doing the closest thing though.)
By the way, Large Pro re-done the same beat in his Beatz Vol.1 LP. The song is titled 'Still Hangin' Out.'
Bruh, where you been, lol?! I've been missing your hott vids! You are the man! I mean, I'm like you. I'll just sit around & try to figure out how the old school producers did there thing! You got this down to the teeth, & I like your explaination of how Large Pro filtered the sample to take out the vocal! Very creative stuff! Then the equipment YOU use! I don't wanna hear nothing about what's best to use or anything! Great post! I'm glad you're back!
@unstablelementz Thank you. I wanted to show that you don't need super capable sampler / sequencer to make dope beats. I see too many people complaining about the hardware they have... Premo still uses Akai MPC-60 and S950! J. Dilla (R.I.P) produced 'Donuts' without MPC-3000 (I heard he used Logic Pro to do all the songs on 'Donuts' LP.)
omg.......

Another fantastic video. That Main source 'hangin out' beat was always one of my favorites, and you did it justice.
Gotta love the ES-1..I was just using mine the other day.
5 stars

Man , in your vids , they all start with a beep , looks like you're in the airplane and then the captain's gonna speak ;P
Great beat btw , you put a lot of work in your beats , sampling bits from several songs ... it's a LOT of work.
