  • wow never realised that's who wrote the song...till I heard Neil say in video that' he' never wanted to sing it and Neil thought it was a beautiful song..Thanks Danny..:)

  • One of the most beautiful tunes ever written, on one of the most under-appreciated LP's EVER to come out of Warner/Reprise... Beggar's Day, Gone Dead Train and more. Besides Cooder also featured a young guitarist that Danny introduced to Neil named Nils Lofgren...

  • This song can drive any living soul to its knees...absolutely gut wrenching....However, Crazy Horse had a warhorse legacy that needs to be put forward. Its missing

  • .... $50 and a plane ticket back to L.A. .... Later that night, Neil got a call from the coroner that Danny was gone. It haunted Neil for years, resulting in a dark period, albeit creative one .... 'Tonight's The Night', 'On The Beach', and 'Time Fades Away' .... The 'Ditch Trilogy' .....

  • No blame whatsoever on Neil's part. He did all he could for Danny right up until that final night. He tried one on one to try to get Danny together enough to go on the Tour they were preparing for ( Time Fades Away ) Danny was too far gone.........

  • Great !

  • I forgot to mention, that the great slide guitar solo was by none other than a young Ry Cooder, back in the days when he appeared on The Rolling Stones " Moonlight Mile " .

  • A bit of history :

Neil Young, from Winnipeg Canada, via Toronto, goes to L.A. forms Buffalo Springfield, leaves the group, as he is prone to do, forms Crazy Horse with Danny Whitten , Danny recorded this great song he had written, ( I still have the vinyl ), Danny died from a drug overdose, and Neil wrote a song about it :

I hit the city and I lost my band,

I watched the needle take another man,

gone , gone the damage done.

    Rest in musical peace

  • @takamine1236

he wrote the song about danny but before he died.

  • @leeharveyosmosis

    OK, Thanks !

  • Exquisite!

I have heard many version of this song - but never this one before today!

It was well worth the wait!

  • thanks for at least admitting that Stewart sold out though I like Stewart's cover of this song.

  • pretty good feel . The best version . what a great artist !!!

  • great, great song. Wish he was still here to sing with Neil. Would be nice to find some actual footage of him singing.

  • I thought this was going to be about a crazy horse. I mean, look at the picture! How disappointing...

  • @dustinwdrake yes u r

  • What a great tune .Nils lofgren has recently said he added one verse as Danny ask him to complete the tune .

  • seriously beautiful song

  • nice song :)

  • Danny Whitten R.I.P.

  • Ry Cooder on the Slide...

  • wow, so amazing! best song/lyrics ever. thanks danny

  • wow, so amazing! best song/lyrics ever

  • "I Don't Want to Talk About It" written by the late, soulful Danny Whitten. Whitten's band, Crazy Horse released it as a track. Others have recorded and i like most, but gotta confess that there's something special of a great tune, as done by the writer, the original.

  • There's a remastered version out now + extra tracks available at Amazon, if anyone can't find it.

Also a 'ROCKETS' CD which is ex!

  • My first time hearing this. Why did you do that to yourself Danny?

  • Ry Cooder on slide guitar, y'all.

  • Danny Whitten - RIP

This is a great album - never can find it online, kind of like John Mayall's at the Whiskey.

This is some sweet musice - Danny Whitten another great talent gone too sone.

Love to Eddie - Happy B'day Brother.

  • @stevelunney I've got it on vinyl. A perfect record.

  • Danny Whitten - RIP

  • I LOVE IT

  • once you're gone, you can't come back

  • Rod Stewart still no.1 interpretation for this song.

  • thank you for the info i respect this song writer

  • The creator always sings the sincerest version (and like this often gets less credit )

  • The creator always sings the sincerest version (and like this often gets less credit )

  • wow ... speachless... :º)

  • Poor Danny. One of rock's sad tales. Tears are welling up in my eyes as I'm listening to this song. Neil must have felt so much guilt after what happened. But what do you do with a musician who is supposed to be giving their all and instead their ruining themselves with drugs and it's destroying their God given talent? I wasn't there, none of us were. I don't know what Neil said to Danny that night, but if only Danny found some hope down deep within. R.I.P.

  • Hauntingly beautiful song!! Danny may have left us too soon but his musici going strong. RIP Danny...

  • What a great tune .Spoke to Nils after a show at the Mean Fiddler Harlesden London in the 90.s .I asked him why he does not play this tune he said its a hard song to play in many ways.

Although Rod Stewart made it popular this version is the first .I would love Neil Young to do this tune one day in whatever mood he is in solo or band wise

  • with some songs, it really takes the songwriter and singer from whose soul it came from to make it sound true. this is one of those songs, i believe.

Great song Danny Whitten, thank you for sharing it with our world. RIP. thanks for posting E.

  • Great album....thumbs down or thumbs up...

  • I cannot stop listening to this song...a great loss to the music world

  • If Rod Stewert went crazy, Danny Whitten would come back and save us all

  • Danny Whitten was the perfect FOIL for Neil.....this is magic....absolute music magic

  • and at his age, I'm sure Rod does.

  • Rod made Danny's song known. Pity Danny killed himself before the song went viral via Rod - who did a lot to make the song international.

  • One thumbs down. Rod Stewart got jealous.

  • This completely destroys the Rod Steward cover...

  • Fantastic stuff. Can't help but think this would be a great song for the Stones to cover.

  • Dear Mr. Danny and Mr. Nils,

thanks to this song, Mr.Rod Stewart was known as the original singer of your song... crap Rod...

  • @micogilbuena: a bit hard on Rod. Rod is not crap and he never claimed to be original.

  • The absolutely great Danny Whitten, gone way too soon, R.I.P

  • I am thinking Crazy Horse originated in Ft.Wayne Indiana. Not certain but many friends speak about it often.

  • love d ugle horse ive seen lol, lol, lol, is d a horse or a pig? maybe crocodile Dundeex

  • love d ugle horse ive seen lol, lol, lol,

  • I love this song - one of the most beautiful songs ever and this is the best version!

  • never heard this before..its just amazing

  • we love you danny, thanks for the music mate.

  • Great lead vocals by Danny. Who is the female doing backing vocals tho?

  • @jonnylag i think that's Nils Lofgren, Neil Young brought him out from the DC area to play on his After the Goldrush Album, and he became part of Crazy Horse too

  • The best!

  • for me - there is only one version of this song. This one.

  • 99% of the time original is better and this one is no exception. It has so much feeling- the voice and the music.

  • Just re-found the album after many years.. Why did they never make it big? Danny should have been absolutely massive. Oh but for the needle and the damage done!

  • @1SanStef .......That says it ALL! Even if you did quote Neal Young. THX

  • I don't like listening to this song... not to say it's not brilliant, it just seems a bit too deep and personal. Then again... Rod Stewart removed the personality and I don't like listening to his version either, because he defacated on it. To Danny!

  • This Song Is Just Great...R.I.P. Danny Whitten..Glad I Came Across This Song..I Will Share This With My Wife..For sure She Will Love This Too.

  • Danny Whitten is singing this song.... He was in the grip of heroin addiction at the time.. Danny Whitten vocals & on guitar, Nils Lofgren on guitar, Ry Cooder on slide guitar. Google Danny Ray Whitten and go to the "dannyraywhitten" website.

  • None of the stewerts where in this band.every one of the members in this band whent on to do Bigger and better things. This Is the most underrated groups ever. most dont know about the members or what they did latter in life.J@XJ@XON

  • CRAZY HORSE IS GREAT!!!!!

  • I don't know which the original: Rod or Crazy Horse, but the fact is that both are very stupend. However Rod is putting more sense and feeling and I listen his version one, twice and more times.

  • I knew Rod Stewart's version, but this one is very nice, too

  • beautiful as neil himself

  • @mammajojay DO you meanNils Lofgrin the one singing this song

  • @jaypauljackson. Whitten is singing lead vocal... Nils was in this band too.

  • @Arnsybill Nils wrote the second verse. Danny only had one and wouldn't record without a second stanza. Nils went away and came back. Danny said that'll do, and crazy horse recorded it. "One of the great ballads of all time," Nils said introducing it when he played it on piano at Copley Plaza, Boston.

  • If you think Rod Stewarts version of this is better, then you have no taste in music, or the ability to judge emotion in real music.

  • @newstodayvideo rod stewart kicks ass at this song its far better....sorry but fail on your half..

  • @vaughan4082 you are obviously no fan of crazy hrose or danny whitten don't defend rod stewart here the man singing is dead why don't you go suck rod stewarts homo dick?

  • @horrorbusiness420 how the fuck did i know that you idiot im 14 so fuck you.you corpse dry fucker!

  • @newstodayvideo damn right !

  • @newstodayvideo Not going to tangle with the Rod vs. Danny. I'll let you have it that Danny's version is more emotive, real, etc. etc. But if you are telling me the Rod Stewart of Shotgun Express, the Faces, and Every Picture Tells a Story can't sing or can't sing as well as Danny Whitten, then, sir, unfortunately, it is you who lack taste in music. Rod may have sold out, but that doesn't diminish what he once was. Also, there's a distinct advantage in being alive Danny didn't allow himself.

  • @phddddd Listen to this guy...he speaks the truth, even if it is difficult for closed-minded people to accept. Ask Paul Westerberg about early Rod.

And I would include the first 4 of Rod's solo albums, not just Every Picture Tells A Story on the list.

I actually didn't even know Rod did a version of this song.

  • I want this song playing as my casket is being lowered into the ground

  • my god this is so sad

  • Love this entire album......thanks for posting......

  • this version really breaks my heart.

  • Danny did not die as a result of a heroin overdose as most people believe.

He died of an overdose of Vodka & Valium on that fateful Saturday night in November, 1972. More than likely as his heart was broken after being sacked from Neil Young's band, it was not an accidental overdose.

He phoned Jack Nitzsche and said, "Would you be there for me no matter what?" Jack said, "Sure." Danny said, "That's all I wanted to know." and hung up. Later he went into the bathroom & never came out alive

  • There is probably no better compliment to Whitten and this song than the version Rod Stewart sang with Amy Belle. That would be the link to the right with the 6.6M and growing views.

I love the original, but man, that Amy Belle version is an addiction all on its own.

  • @lurchutube GET A CLUE MAN

  • @WeenBanjo

Ween, I'm sorry life passed you by when it handed out common sense. Your mother still loves you anyway. Probably.

  • @WeenBanjo

Try to compare the two without your own bias next time, if you can.

  • Who knows what Whitten would have gone on to do.Its well documented that he was a smack head .When Neil Young was recording Harvest he gave him a chance to get back on track .That evil shit got him though

    regards

    jimmy

  • 3 W's dot dannyraywhitten dotcom

    Go Enjoy!!!!

  • @LittleRaggie thanks for that......

  • @GHETTOPOPS79 he is alive - in his music - just listen to his heart -beautiful 5*****

  • The needle and the damage done, eh. R.I.P Danny. You left us an immortal song !

  • @joemckna. Thanks för the info.

  • Is this the original version? Who wrote it? This kills Rod!

  • @Fyllbulten

This is the original. Danny Whitten wrote this. He co-wrote a lot of songs with Young(early years) while he was with Crazy Horse. He was a great singer song writer that nobody really knew because of early death. Notably, Whitten sang harmony with Young on "Cinnamon Girl". Young's "The Needle and the Damage Done" is about Whitten. He died in the early 70's and Young blamed himself, and felt responsible for the death for a long time-- see Young's "Ditch Trilogy"

  • thanks guysI don't want to talk about it how this song once helped me when SHE broke my heart

  • Comment removed

  • Hmmm i'm not sure which version i like better... =/ they're both nice i guess... but something about Rods stands out abit more... i don't know =/ haha

  • Rod's version is much better

  • @homeboyadvance you're an idiot

  • Well you're tone deaf@horrorbusiness420

  • i don't want to talk about it

  • Rod Stewart raped this song : (

  • i agree , he rapes every song tbh

  • che bella...

  • Again, thank you so very very much for posting this - just perfect

  • beautiful

  • Danny Whitten R.I.P.

  • Amen to that!!

  • thanx for posting! rod steward can piss his pants!

  • @ericmgislason Agreed! Same goes for "The First Cut is The Deepest" too, by Cat Stevens.

  • @ericmgislason You got that right. Rod ran away from the deep feelings. He ruined this song. Ruined it, I say
