Very eerie, especially with the music (and the fact that it sounds a bit shaky makes it more frightening). But the fire did seem to become severe a bit quickly. :)
I remember watching this at the time - had no choice really, brother watched all the soaps and I seem to remember the music which often popped up with death cliff hangers.
Three badly acted extras were see hanging about reception, later its revealed they threw a firework into reception, causing the fire.Sam Hurst/Norton died in the fire.
Meg was thought to be in the fire but turned up on the QE2 alive and well.
This is the first time I've seen the end credits for this as I missed it 27 years ago as we had a power cut at the moment just after you first see the fire. I was 7 years old and quite literally crapped myself as we were plunged into darkness for over an hour and it was quite eerie.
I went to a bonfire party right after watching this and couldn't get the image of the burning motel out of my head! I was 6 and a bit messed up over it methinks! lol
I heard this was filmed on the airfield of Halfpenny Green in Bobbinngton on the way to Wolverhampton.
I also agree with you Morgan, it was very sad Nolly was sacked but it was the sackings that happened after that did the most damage.Corriw survived without Elsie, Ena and Annie Walker but the changes in Crossroads from 1985 -88 was to much to soon.I liked Nicola Freeman and i think she was the only good asset to the show.
Absolutely! Everyone always says how it was the axing of Meg which eneded Crossroads, but the show continued to attract thirteen million viewers in the immediate years after her departure. It was, like you say, Central's continual obsession to discard several much loved characters in quick succession. They were obviously embaressed by the programme, and the appointment of that awful William Smethhurst as producer was the last straw. He killed the show.
I never liked that vesrion of the theme tune. Am I the only person who thinks that maybe it was the right decision to axe the character of Meg? I mean, it can't be healthy to have a soap revolve around one character. The show could have flourished for many years after had the producers not been so intent on re-inventing it every five minutes, axing many popular characters along the way. No, Noele's dismissal wasn't a bad thing, but the succession of sackings that followed was.
Central should have never axed Noele Gordon because Crossroads without Meg Mortimer i like Coronation Street whithout Ken Barlow. That version of the theme tune is definately the best verion of the theme tune. It was the depressing Kings Oak theme tune from 1987-88 I did not like and that awful remake from 2003.
As I recall the PR blurb at the time said the set was reconstructed on an airfield and the cameras where wrapped in asbestos to protect them although I don't know what it did to the camera operators!
It was said the fire was done on the orders of the incoming Central TV management who wanted to update the Crossroads image and get rid of Meg Mortimer.
It was the charactor "Sam" he was in prison years befor for arson and also left Benny £21k, Syd Hooper borrowes it of Benny for a bet and never gave it back!
Sam ?. I dnt know of that one. Hehe i am trying to get to know alot about crossroads but i have only seen 1 old episode i am trying to find more but no one has any. But its like my obsession with the old Corrie. But i have the eps for them so i know everyone hehe. Thanks for replying btw.
Sam was only in it very briefly-he's the one who runs into the fire to save Meg, unaware that she's gone AWOL! Loads of Crossroads DVDs out now for you to play catch up with!
I'm a fan of old Corrie too-love watching ones from the 70s!
I have 80 episodes from each era. 1960 - 1969, 1970 - 1979 and 1980 - 1989. I love them 60's and 70's rock, i am not to keen on the 80's after Renee died it didnt interest me that much. Although the rovers explosion got me interested hehe. But i am starting to like the look of crossroads. I watched the later ones in early 2000 but the older ones looks quite good. Really classic.
Oh and by the way my fav corrie characters are by far Martha Longhurst, Ena Sharples, Elsie Tanner, Hilda Ogden, Bet Lynch, Albert Tatlock, Alf Roberts, Renee Roberts and Claire Peacock. Hehe. And my fav episodes are either Ena and Elsie's fight Martha's death Renee's death The Rovers explosion Hilda's Seance Number 7 collapsing The wagon crashing into the rovers. You got any fav characters from Corrie ? and who is ur fav crossroads character?

That 70's decor and chintz had to GO!! Can you believe they got WINGS to redo the soundtrack.
maxkersh 3 years ago
The decor was 1960s - introduced at the culmination of that fabulous decade in 1969. You can't get any more 60s than that!

Brookside went a similar way to Crossroads, Channel 4 almost became embarrassed with it, the same way as Central did with Crossroads

Does anyone know how the fire started?

I'm pretty sure the fire was the result of a stray firework from the fireworks display that was being held outside.
